Rudyard Kipling
Many Inventions
London: Macmillan and Co. 1893. First edition. Hardcover. This volume contains a series of short stories with original publication dates ranging from 1890 to early 1893. With this English first edition Macmillan became the sole English publisher of Kiplings prose works for the rest of his life. It was the first collection of stories written following Kipling's departure from India in 1889. The stories have themes ranging from the paranormal to naval adventures and the jungle story 'In the Rukh' which is the first appearance of Mowgli who would of course feature prominently in both Jungle Books published in the two following years. This edition was also the first appearance of the opening and closing poems To the True Romance and Envoy later titled Anchor Song. The title of the volume is taken from Ecclesiastes vii. 29. which appears on the title page. The book is bound in blue cloth with gilt print on the spine ornamental gilt border at the spine head and upper front cover blind stamped ornamental border at the bottom of the spine and front cover and blind-stamped publishers device at the rear cover center. Condition is good plus. The binding remains tight with nicely rounded spine. The spine is dulled with fractional chipping at the heel the rear board scuffed and soiled the lower front corner bumped. The contents are clean with no apparent spotting. An inked owner dedication to a son from Dad on the front free endpaper is dated 1916 and there is a decorative bookplate without name affixed to the front pastedown. The original dark green endpapers are present with a cosmetic split to the rear pastedown gutter that does not affect binding integrity. Joseph Rudyard Kipling 1865-1936 was an English poet short-story writer and novelist chiefly remembered for his celebration of British imperialism tales and poems of British soldiers in India and his tales for children. Despite this reputation Kiplings extraordinary body of work eludes all labels in its range and variety and fully expresses the sense of one of his favourite texts: Praised be Allah for the diversity of his creatures. ODNB Kipling was in his twenties when his stories of Anglo-Indian life made him a literary celebrity and he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1907. Born in India and educated in England Kipling could not afford to attend either Oxford or Cambridge University and instead returned to India to work as a newspaper editor and writer which proved formative. He returned to England in 1889 later living in the United States and South Africa before finally settling in England. Kipling remains the youngest person to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature and was also the first English language author awarded. Puck of Pook's Hill
London: Macmillan & Co. Ltd. 1906. First edition. Hardcover. Harold R. Millar. This is a magnificent copy of the British first edition second printing in the exceptionally scarce dust jacket. The second printing was issued the same month as the first printing and is nearly identical. The dust jacket differs from that of the first printing only in adding Puck of Pook's Hill to the list of Kipling titles on the rear panel. The volume differs only in the copyright page notation of the second printing. Puck of Pooks Hill is Kiplings abidingly English collection of ten stories and sixteen poems informed by English history and animated by English mythology for a youthful audience this British first edition published with twenty illustrations by Harold R. Millar. This is the first publication of the sixteen poems. Preceding the British and American first editions the stories had appeared in Strand Magazine as well as in Ladies Home Journal and McClures Magazine in America. Several minor changes were made in the story texts as printed in book form and there are numerous but unimportant textual differences between the English and American Editions. Richards A205 This copy is rare thus fine in a very good dust jacket. The red cloth binding is improbably bright and clean tight with sharp corners vivid gilt and no appreciable wear. The contents are pristine crisp and bright with no previous ownership marks no spotting clean fore and bottom edges and bright gilt top edge. The endpapers show differential toning corresponding to the dust jacket flaps. A single leaf verso and recto bound in at the rear advertises other works by Kipling. The sole previous ownership mark is a tiny Times Book Club sticker affixed to the lower rear pastedown. The dust jacket shows only trivial loss at the spine head and corners with moderate overall soiling and short closed tears to the upper hinges and upper edge of the rear panel. The spine shows mild toning but the red print remains distinct. The dust jacket is protected beneath a removable archival quality clear cover. When first published Kipling referred to the first four stories as part of scheme of mine for trying to give children not a notion of history but a notion of time sense which is at the bottom of all history that rightly understood means love of ones fellow man and the land one lives in. Letters 3 p.189 Siblings Dan and Una of rural Sussex are reciting A Midsummer Nights Dream to one another on Midsummer Eve near the titular Pooks Hill when they summon Puck a small brown broad-shouldered pointy-eared person with a snub nose slanting blue eyes and a wicked twinkle in his eye. Puck introduces himself as the oldest Old Thing in England and introduces a procession of figures from English history among them a Roman centurion a Saxon monk a Norman knight a Viking sea captain and so on. Rewards and Fairies published in 1910 added additional stories and poems. Joseph Rudyard Kipling 1865-1936 was an English poet short-story writer and novelist chiefly remembered for his celebration of British imperialism stories and poems of British India and his tales for children. Despite this reputation Kiplings extraordinary body of work eludes all labels in its range and variety Kipling's work is not only of the highest artistic excellence it is deeply humane and fully expresses the sense of one of his favourite texts: Praised be Allah for the diversity of his creatures. ODNB Kipling was in his twenties when his stories of Anglo-Indian life made him a literary celebrity and he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1907 the year after this book was published. This book has two instances - on the gilt front cover device and on the half title verso of the swastika symbol prevalent in Kiplings published works an ancient symbol of good fortune used at least 5000 years before being perverted by Hitlers Reich. Rudyard Kipling
Captains Courageous
London: Macmillan & Co. Ltd. 1897. First edition. Hardcover. This is the British first edition noteworthy for both for interesting provenance and for retaining the illustrated front face of the original dust jacket. Kipling tells the story of the spoiled fifteen-year-old son of a millionaire who is lost at sea and finds himself rescued by the crew of a fishing schooner which proves to be a redemption of both character and body. From an original 1897 review: A big soft-armed wave picks the boy from the deck of an ocean steamer and drops him into a dory which happens with fairy-tale appropriateness to come by and this convenient conveyance delivers him over to a crew of stern-faced laconic fishermen who knock the nonsense out of him and put him in the way of learning the two lessons that in Mr. Kipling's eyes make up the chief duty of manto work and not to be afraid. This British first edition is a handsome production featuring gilt-stamped blue cloth illustrated on both the front cover and spine black endpapers gilt page edges and 22 full-page illustrations by I. W. Taber within. This copy is in very good condition. The blue cloth binding is tight with modest wear to spine ends and corners light scuffing to the blank rear cover and a slight forward lean. The spine gilt is mildly dulled still distinct but no longer vibrant. The contents remain respectably bright though we do note intermittent spotting throughout. The original black endpapers are intact as are all illustrations including the frontispiece and tissue guard. The quite rare original dust jacket was illustrated and lettered in dark blue on light bluish gray paper and featured two front face vignettes of a dory being rowed on the lower half and of said dory delivering mail to a schooner on the upper half. The illustrated front face of the dust jacket is preserved with this copy tipped onto the front free endpaper verso. A tiny Pall Mall booksellers sticker is affixed to the upper front pastedown. This book came to us from the library of Nelson Doubleday Jr. son of Nelson Doubleday and grandson of Frank Nelson Doubleday Kiplings friend and U.S. publisher and founder of the Doubleday publishing empire. F.N. Doubleday began work in the publishing industry working for Charles Scribners Sons. His 18-year career with Scribners included the task of assembling a complete set of Kipling's works for publication in a collected edition in 1897. His work with Kipling on this endeavor sparked a friendship and partnership that lasted for decades. Kipling affectionately gave Doubleday the nickname "Effendi" a play on the initials of his name - F.N.D. Frank's son Nelson was president of the firm from 1922 to 1946 as was Nelson Jr. from 1978 to 1983. Joseph Rudyard Kipling 1865-1936 was an English poet short-story writer and novelist chiefly remembered for his celebration of British imperialism tales and poems of British soldiers in India and his tales for children. Despite this reputation Kiplings extraordinary body of work eludes all labels in its range and variety Kipling's work is not only of the highest artistic excellence it is deeply humane and fully expresses the sense of one of his favourite texts: Praised be Allah for the diversity of his creatures. Owing mostly to ill health Kipling's production of original work diminished in the years between the end of the First World War and his death. Condition is good plus. The boards and gilt remain bright with light wear to hinges and extremities and a small spot of blistering near the front cover fore edge. The chief flaw that prevents our grading this copy as very good plus is a very tender front hinge the gutter split at the second blank end sheet with the mull and binding cords beneath exposed just holding the first signature. The original dark green endpapers are intact. The contents are clean. We find no spotting and even the page edges are unusually free of spotting and soiling showing only mild age toning. The sole previous ownership mark is a decorative bookplate affixed to the front pastedown. The book is housed in a marbled paper-lined blue cloth folding chemise nested within a quarter blue morocco slipcase with rounded spine raised spine bands gilt print and transitions beveled edges and marbled paper lining. The slipcase is a bit scuffed and toned but lovely work with a nice shelf presence. Rudyard Kipling
The Jungle Book and The Second Jungle Book
London: Macmillan and Co. 1894. First edition. Hardcover. John Lockwood Kipling. This is a compelling set of British first editions of perhaps Kiplings most famous works the first and second Jungle Books. These copies were previously owned by Churchills friends and publishers Frank and Nelson Doubleday and apparently used by Nelson to prepare Doubledays 1946 editions. Ironically Kiplings quintessential tales of India were conceived in Vermont where Kipling and his father John Lockwood Kipling 1837-1911 worked together in the closest harmony as the two sat smoking their pipes and plotting out fresh stories together. Allen Kipling Sahib p.328 Here Mowgli was born the infant found by Father Wolf saved from Shere Khan and tutored in the Laws of the Jungle by Bagheera the panther and Baloo the bear. The pen took charge and I watched it begin to write stories about Mowgli and the animals which later grew into the Jungle Books. Kipling had left India for the last time in 1891 but With his fathers guidance he learned to undo what the North has done and so let back in all the sights and the sounds and smells / That ran with our youth in the eye of the Sun the flotsam and jetsam of twelve years of Indian living just long enough to create the celebration of childhood that is The Jungle Book Allen Kipling Sahib p. 364 The Jungle Book was published in 1894 seven stories and seven poems with eight of the illustrations by the authors father. The Second Jungle Book was published in 1895 eight stories and eight poems this time with thirty-seven illustrations by the authors father. Both first editions are bound in matching blue cloth strikingly illustrated and printed in gilt on the spines and front covers the contents with dark bluish green endpapers illustration plates and all edges trimmed and gilt. The Jungle Book is first printing with R. & R. Clark as printer on p. 212 as opposed to R. & R. Clark Ltd.. First English edition of The Second Jungle Book is confirmed by 238 pages of text The Kings Ankus stopping abruptly at line 8 p139 with 515 words missing. Richards A76 p.80 and A85 p.87 These copies came to us from the library of Nelson Doubleday Jr. 1933-2015 son of Nelson Doubleday 1889-1949 and grandson of Frank Nelson Doubleday 1862-1934 Kiplings friend and U.S. publisher and founder of the Doubleday publishing empire. F.N. Doubleday met Kipling while working for Charles Scribners Sons. They struck an intimate lifelong friendship. Kipling nicknamed Doubleday "Effendi" a play on his initials - F.N.D. Frank's son Nelson was president of the firm from 1922 to 1946 as was Nelson Jr. from 1978 to 1983. Each of these first edition volumes bears a small printed slip of paper on the title page with new publisher information reading in three lines "Doubleday & Company Inc. Garden City New York 1946". The slips were pasted over the original publication information though both have since come loose. Doubleday & Company published an edition of these books in 1946 the last year of Nelson's presidency. The title page of the 1946 edition matches those of these British first editions with the pasted-on slips making it likely to the point of certainty that these particular volumes were used as mockups by Nelson Doubleday. Condition is very good minus. The bindings are square and tight with some fraying to spine ends and dulling of spine gilt. The contents remain crisp and complete and the books feel unread. We note all illustrations present bright page edge gilt light intermittent spotting barely noticeable in The Jungle Book and cosmetic cracking to the endpapers at the gutters that does not impact binding integrity. Additional 1946 edition mock-up notations include title in pencil on The Jungle Book frontispiece recto pencil strikethrough of All rights reserved on both title pages and brief pencil notation to the upper left front free endpaper verso. Rudyard Kipling
Two Forewords
Garden City New York: Doubleday Doran & Co. Ltd. 1935. First edition. Hardcover. This first and limited edition collects two letters written by Kipling to his American publishers Frank Nelson Doubleday and his son Nelson Doubleday. The first letter was written to Nelson and used as the Foreword to A Kipling Pageant in 1935. The second letter was written to Frank and used as the Introduction to the Outward Bound Edition of Kipling's works published by Scribners in 1897 and arranged through the efforts of Frank Doubleday. This copy comes to us from the Doubleday library. The edition was limited to 950 copies each bound in marbled paper-covered boards with gilt-stamped black cloth spine the volume housed in a notched red cardboard slipcase. This near-fine unread copy retains the original slipcase which is damaged and worn. The binding is square and tight with sharp corners and bright spine gilt. Neither the boards nor cloth spine show any appreciable wear. The signatures remain uncut so the copy is demonstrably unread. There are no previous ownership marks. What prevents our grading this volume as fine is spotting moderate to the first and final few leaves and thereafter primarily confined to the untrimmed fore edges. The accompanying slipcase has done its job protecting the book and remains in one piece but shows definite wear with some loss to the top and bottom edges to a maximum depth of one inch. Most of the seams show wear with the beginnings of splits evident in places. His 18-year career with Scribners included the task of assembling a complete set of Kipling's works for publication in a collected edition in 1897 the aforementioned Outward Bound Edition. Iconic English poet short-story writer and novelist Joseph Rudyard Kipling 1865-1936 is chiefly remembered for his celebration of British imperialism tales and poems of British soldiers in India and his tales for children. Despite this reputation Kiplings extraordinary body of work eludes all labels in its range and variety Kipling's work is not only of the highest artistic excellence it is deeply humane and fully expresses the sense of one of his favourite texts: Praised be Allah for the diversity of his creatures. ODNB Kipling was in his twenties when his stories of Anglo-Indian life made him a literary celebrity and he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1907. Kipling remains the youngest person to receive the Prize and was also the first English language author awarded. SOUVENIRS OF FRANCE
1933. London: Macmillan and Co. 1933. Original blue cloth with gilt-decorated spine with dust jacket. First English Edition preceded only by the American copyright edition that was issued earlier that year in two wrappered leaflets and a Paris edition translated into French. The standard binding for this English edition was this blue cloth but some copies were issued instead undoubtedly for an additional price in maroon limp leather. It is interesting to note that the front cover Ganesha device elephant with lotus flower and swastika no longer has the swastika -- for this was 1933. This copy is in fine condition; the dust jacket is very good-plus minor soil and edge-wear. Richards A414; Stewart 601. <br/><br/> hardcover
