‎The Jungle Book‎

‎London: Macmillan and Co. 1894 First edition first printing. Illustrated by John Lockwood Kipling William Henry Drake and Paul Frenzeny. Original publisher's navy cloth spine lettered in gilt pictorial jungle images based on artwork by the author's father John Lockwood Kipling stamped to the front board in gilt all edges gilt green coated endpapers. A good copy with wear moderate wear and rubbing to the spine spine ends frayed corners worn lean to spine; internally ownership blindstamp to first blank spine cracked at pages 128/129. Overall a good presentable copy in the original publisher's cloth. The Jungle Book is a collection of short stories and verses the most famous of which relate to the feral child protagonist Mowgli a "man cub." While they can be read independently of each other each chapter serves as a fable using animal figures to provide a moral lesson. In each volume the short stories are both preceded and followed by poems or songs including the notable "Mowgli's Song" and "The Law of the Jungle." The Jungle Books based on the author's childhood and later work experience in British India are indicative of Western Orientalist ideology at the turn of the 20th century which is somewhat softened by Kipling's fondness for his former home. Both Jungle Books are illustrated by the author's father John Lockwood Kipling who was a practicing illustrator and art professor in Bombay. . First Edition. Hard Cover. Good. ‎Just So Stories‎

‎London: Macmillan & Co. 1902 First edition first printing. Illustrated by the author. Original publisher's red cloth stamped with illustrations of animals at a watering hole in black and white. A very good or better copy with only some rubbing to the extremities foxing to the endpapers and without the usual fading to the spine. A bright tight and attractive copy. A book that originated as a series of bedtime stories told by Kipling to his daughter Just So Stories contains chapters explaining the processes through which various animals came to look as they do including "How the Whale Got His Throat" and "How the Camel Got His Hump." ‎The Brushwood Boy‎

‎Doubleday and McClure Company 1899. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. Lowell Orson. First American edition. Ink name on half-title page binding just beginning to weaken spine slightly faded. 1899 Hard Cover. We have more books available by this author! 119 pp. 7 3/4 x 5 1/4. Original blue-green cloth gilt titles black design with silver moon on front cover gilt top page ridge decorative endpapers. Black & white illustrations by Orson Lowell throughout. The first separate publication of this title following its appearance in Century Magazine 1895 and the collection of stories entitled The Day's Work 1898. A separate British edition followed in 1907 the year Kipling won the Nobel Prize for Literature. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Joseph Rudyard Kipling December 30 1865 – January 18 1936 was an English author and poet born in Bombay British India and best known for his works The Jungle Book 1894 The Second Jungle Book 1895 Just So Stories 1902 and Puck of Pook's Hill 1906; his novel Kim 1901; his poems including Mandalay 1890 Gunga Din 1890 If— 1910 and Ulster 1912 1912; and his many short stories including The Man Who Would Be King 1888 and the collections Life's Handicap 1891 The Day's Work 1898 and Plain Tales from the Hills 1888. He is regarded as a major 'innovator in the art of the short story'; his children's books are enduring classics of children's literature; and his best works speak to a versatile and luminous narrative gift. Kipling was one of the most popular writers in English in both prose and verse in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The author Henry James famously said of him: 'Kipling strikes me personally as the most complete man of genius as distinct from fine intelligence that I have ever known.' In 1907 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature making him the first English language writer to receive the prize and he remains its youngest-ever recipient. Among other honors he was sounded out for the British Poet Laureateship and on several occasions for a knighthood all of which he declined. However later in life Kipling also came to be seen in George Orwell's words as a 'prophet of British imperialism.' Many saw prejudice and militarism in his works and the resulting controversy about him continued for much of the 20th century. According to critic Douglas Kerr: 'He is still an author who can inspire passionate disagreement and his place in literary and cultural history is far from settled. But as the age of the European empires recedes he is recognized as an incomparable if controversial interpreter of how empire was experienced. That and an increasing recognition of his extraordinary narrative gifts make him a force to be reckoned with.' Doubleday and McClure Company hardcover books‎

‎KIPLING RUDYARD‎

‎Original Autograph Letter Signed by Rudyard Kipling‎

‎Maidencombe: 4 1/2†x 7†May 4 1897. Original autograph letter signed by the author Rudyard Kipling on printed stationery from Rock House Maidencombe St. Marychurch where he and his wife lived between 1896 and 1898. The letter reads in full: “Dear Watson Many thanks for your note and the contract which certainly opens a new and safe method of burglary. I always said that the Oriental thief can give his white brothers many points in the game. The necklace he chose was amethyst & pearl - not emerald & pearl - and it is a beauty. I should very much like to be able to afford a white pearl necklace. Do you suppose the price would be very heavy I should like to have an idea on this subject. Bombay must have been a ghastly place this winter. My sister’s letters gave me some of the news as she learned it and it seems to have been fearful. Always sincerely yours Rudyard.†Near fine with a hint of use and a single crease from folding. 4 1/2†x 7†unknown books‎
