Direct from the Widdrington library at Newton Hall the 18th century country house and estate in Northumberland with a pencil shelfmark to the front free endpaper. Departmental Ditties comprises verses about official life in India reprinted from the CMG. This which Kipling always regarded as his first book had a great success among the community it satirised - ODNB. Condition: The binding is tight and firm. There is only very mild wear to the extremities with just very mild bumping and rubbing and some slight discolouration and marks to the boards. Internally the pages are generally clean with very occasional scattered spots and very mild browning to the page edges. With light scattered spots and slight offsetting to the endpapers. Condition: The bindingis tight and firm with both covers and all internal pages securely attached although the front hinge is just starting to show straining. There is some minor wear to the extremities includingrubbing to the boards some slight fadingand bumping to the corners. Internally pages are generally bright and clean with the occasional brown spot or handling mark. There is an ink insciption to the front pastedown. Overall the condition of this volume is very good. Bound in cloth with gilt lettering and a unclipped dust wrapper. Some of the pages are unopened. First Edition. Kipling's first book to be published after his years in the service of the war were ended was the volume of poems called The Years Between 1919; some of these from before the war reflected the turbulent political conflicts of those days; others recording the experiences of the war varied from savage to desolate. It is by far the darkest of all Kipling's collections. Condition: The binding is tight and firm. There is very slight wear to the extremities including very slight bumping and fading to the top of the spine. The dust wrapper hasaseveral small closed tears with a chip which leads into a closed tear measuring approx 35mm. There is some sunning to the spine.
