There is something disturbing and uncompromising about each image by itself and in the context of the relentless whole. Schles' point is that we should not be distracted but instead be completely immersed. If "Invisible City" is inward-looking "The Geometry of Innocence" looks outward at the larger world and sees both good and bad cause for hope and reason for despair. Still the prevailing sentiment is dark and melancholy and as such is reminiscent of his debut collection. Schles also has a didactic purpose articulated in his Manifesto/Essay which is "must-reading" for anyone uncritically enamored of photography which includes many photographers and critics . While his essay is critical about photography Schles is obviously not against photography. Indeed the latter stance would be self-defeating because even the most subversive "anti-photographic" photograph can be easily coopted by the system to reinforce unjust social structures and feed a corrupt mass culture. Instead he is for a photography that somehow retains its subversive existential power and empowers people given the fact that "we are formed by a flawed society. ‎Ein tadelloses Ex. - Dogmatische Interpretationen, die Kafkas Texte in gefällige und konsistente Lehren übersetzen, indem sie seinen poetischen Ausdruck auf außerästhetische ?Inhalte" und verständliche Begriffe reduzieren, haben in einer kritischen, streng textorientierten Kafka-Forschung keinen Platz: eine jede Deutung wird wissenschaftlich unglaubhaft, wenn sie sich als das ?eigentliche" und ?wahre" Textverständnis zu etablieren sucht und ihren vorgeblich privilegierten Zugang nur mit apodiktischen Urteilen und der scheinbar höheren Einsicht des Eingeweihten zu rechtfertigen weiß. Unbefriedigend bleibt allerdings auch die inzwischen fast zum Forschungskonsens gewordene These von der Unausdeutbarkeit der Texte Kafkas, solange sie, wie es zumeist geschieht, lediglich in Anlehnung an die aktuellen Diskursmoden (des Konstruktivismus, der Dekonstruktion etc.) vertreten wird, ohne an ihrem Gegenstand, dem Wortlaut des literarischen Textes, geprüft zu werden. An die Stelle der willkürlichen Sinnsetzung einerseits und des bloßen Verzichts auf letzten, substantiellen Sinn andererseits hat deshalb die Frage zu treten: woran, an welchen Texteigenschaften und Erzählstrategien liegt es, daß gerade das Werk Kafkas sich jeder Lösung, die einen bestimmten zusammenhängenden Sinn intendiert, um seine Texte damit inhaltlich festzulegen, so hartnäckig verweigert? In detaillierter Analyse ausgewählter Romanpassagen und Erzählungen, insbesondere der ?Legende" vom Türhüter und ihres Entstehungskontextes im Proceß, hat Friedrich Schmidt - ohne Letztbegründungen zu geben - in der vorliegenden Studie auf diese Frage geantwortet. Lettere perdute per sempre. Conservato è invece l'appello a Kafka di un infelice messo alle strette dalla cugina che non comprende il senso della Metamorfosi.‎

Autors; SIGNIERT. - Obwohl Glück zu den zentralen Motiven gehört, deren Auslotung zum Verständnis Kafkas unerlässlich ist - um eine These Walter Benjamins zu verallgemeinern ist es bis dato noch nie substantiell zum Thema einer Interpretation Kafkas gemacht worden. Dabei ist der Komplex Kafka (Benjamin) vor allem auch ein Komplex des Glücks. Als ein Autist des Glücks allerdings macht Kafka Glück verzweifelt ironisch virulent durch sein paradox wirkendes Gegenteil: Unglück. Kafkas [Glücks-JDiskurs ist also immer schon [Un-]Glücks-Diskurs. Und vermutlich enthält Kafkas negative Dialektik des Schreibens die unwiderstehlichste .Anleitung zum Unglücklichsein', die die [Welt-] Literatur kennt. VOLKER STEFFEN, Dr. phil., geb. 1968 in Berlin, studierte nach einem einem kurzen prägenden Intermezzo an der Pariser Sorbonne Komparatistik und Philosophie an der Freien Universität Berlin.... (Verlagstext) // ... Die Thematik des Glücks wird also gleichsam exponierend und für Kafka typisch in die Erzählung eingebracht. In Frage steht nämlich - wie bei sämtlichen erzählerischen Hauptfiguren bei Kafka - vor allem eins: ob der Held denn fähig zum Glück sei. Der Plot des Romans folgt ja überhaupt erst aus dem grundlegenden Unglück, der Verführung Karls durch ein Dienstmädchen sowie der daraus resultierenden Schwangerschaft und der Entscheidung, den jungen Delinquenten in die Fremde nach Amerika zu schicken. Etwa damit er dort sein Glück machen kann? Der idealerweise von Positivismus und Optimismus bestimmte ,american way of life' funktioniert bei Kafka natürlich nicht: Dieser Amerika- und Einwanderer-Roman läuft... gegen das Muster der success story. Sein Stichwort heißt: failure. Aus dem potentiellen [Glücks-] Fall droht eine reale Katastrophe zu werden. Das Glück wird der anfangs so hoffnungsvoll erscheinende Held einer zur mit filmreifen Slapstickmomenten garnierten [Tragi-] Komödie sich entwickelnden [Grotesk-] Geschichte geradezu gesetzmäßig bis zum offen gelassenen Schluss vergeblich suchen. Und auch wenn man mit Benjamin Karl als die glücklichere Inkarnation des K bezeichnen kann, so scheint doch im Verlauf des Romans mehr und mehr durch, dass das Glück für ihn wohl ein Ding der Unmöglichkeit ist. ...
