The book design by Barbara Martin. Three folded sheets unopened at the head fore edge trimmed and comprising the pages from Title through the last poem. These are laid loose in a light olive-green wrap of stiff mould made paper. These sheets are genuine printed for Black Sparrow by Mackintosh & Young on cream-colored watermarked laid paper. Paginated 22 2 with 24 pages. These comprise a spurious "proof" copy never produced or issued by Black Sparrow Press. "A small unknown quantity of folded unbound sheets were removed from the printer's trash bin without the knowledge of the publisher and distributed as proof copies." Morrow & Cooney 284. The title page has a large "PROOF" ink stamp and an ink signature I deem fraudulent: "JCOates" in cramped conjoined script that's uncharacteristic of the way Joyce Carol Oates signed. The last page has a large ink stamp of "Black Sparrow Press / P. O. Box 3993 / Santa Barbara CA 93105". Both ink stamps are spurious and not applied by the printer Mackintosh & Young or Black Sparrow Press. In an 11" x 8" custom clamshell box burgundy cloth over boards paper spine label "Joyce / Carol / Oates // Season / of /Peril" at head and "Uncorrected / Proof /device/ Santa Barbara / device1977" in gilt at the tail. QRL presented work by both major and emerging authors: Pound Miller Van Doren Merton Sartre Kafka Montale Cummings et al. The colophon is signed in blue ink by Oates and numbered in red ink 198 of 200. This is an hors commerce copy copies 181 through 200 being from the reserved 21 copies not for sale. Morrow & Cooney 284. Bound in quarter red cloth and red/tan illustrated paper over boards printed in black dark blue green and white. The cover drawing is by Oates. As with all S&O editions the slipcases were handmade by Ralph Sylvester and on this edition only the lettered and named copies received one. Letterpress printed in Fournier on Curtis Rag paper by LA printer Lillian Marks. The second publication and first original work by Sylvester and Orphanos. Though still relatively unknown as publishers at the time S&O were more widely known as booksellers issuing limited edition catalogs since 1973. Oates was a customer of theirs and submitted her manuscipt to them after being impressed by the production of their first book Isherwood's Christopher and His Kind. After receiving her copy she wrote to them 'I've thought now and then sometimes almost with a sense of regret that Sentimental Education is the best piece of sustained writing I've done or will ever do.
