JOYCE, James
Anna Livia Plurabelle.
New York Crosby Gaige 1928. . FIRST EDITION no. 3 of six numbered copies of 50 COPIES ON PALE GREEN-TINTED PAPER from an overall limitation of 850; 8vo; title previously detached cleanly at gutter now with neat reversible tissue paper repair to verso chip from fore-edge of a preliminary blank leaf slight separation at upper hinge bookplate to front pastedown; publisher's black cloth lettered in gilt on the spine and with triangular gilt design on upper cover top edge gilt presented in morocco-backed cloth drop-back box.
The first edition of Anna Livia Plurabelle by James Joyce the text that was to become chapter eight in Finnegans Wake and introduce Joyce readers to the character that fellow Irish author Edna O'Brien was to describe as 'the most accessible and indeed beloved character conceived by Joyce'.

Slocum and Cahoon note that: 'Of these 50 copies on light green paper probably 6 were offered for sale by the publisher. These were numbered 1 to 6 with the following notice on p.iv in the handwriting of Crosby Gaige: This is one of 6 copies on green paper. Crosby Gaige.'; however this copy is simply numbered '3' and does not bear the publisher's statement on the limitation page. The remaining 44 copies were presumably disseminated by Crosby Gaige with the exception of a few which were passed on to the Chaucer Head Book Shop New York by Random House in 1938.
Slocum & Cahoon A32. AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED ALS
Paris 24 November 1920. Letter. Close to Fine. Small 4-1/2" x 6-1/2" AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED "James Joyce" to Madame Yasushi Tanaka Louise Gebhard Cann on blue paper integral with envelope which is addressed in Joyce's hand and postmarked on the verso. In full: "Dear Madam In reply to your letter I shall call on you on Sunday afternoon next as it seems to be the most convenient time for you. Sincerely yours James Joyce." Louise Gebhard Cann was a prominent writer and art critic in early 20th century France. At Ezra Pounds suggestion Cann wrote to Joyce requesting an interview with him for an article on writers in France set to appear in an upcoming issue of THE PACIFIC REVIEW. Following publication of the "Nausicaa" episode of ULYSSES in THE LITTLE REVIEW the previous year Joyces writing was deemed obscene. This particular issue of THE LITTLE REVIEW was effectively banned in the United States and it is believed that because of the controversy the editors then decided to omit any mention of Joyce from the finished article published in the March 1921 issue of THE PACIFIC REVIEW. JOYCE, James, Mary Manning
Broadside: The Poets' Theatre presents a return engagement of James Joyce's Finnegans Wake in Scenes Arranged by Mary Manning
Cambridge Massachusetts: The Poets' Theatre Workshop 1955. Hardcover. Good. Broadside illustrated in color on stiff cardstock. Measuring 10.25" x 13.75". Two incorrectly used printed apostrophes are whited-out by hand some horizontal creases and a small light stain near very good. Poster for Manning’s stage adaptation of Joyce’s novel that Manning arranged in 1955 as The Voice of Shem. Manning was a regular cast member at the Abbey Theatre a playwright and was a filmmaker. After a distinguished career in Ireland she moved to Boston where she served as managing director of the Idler Theatre at Radcliffe College in the 1940s and was one of the founding members of the Poet’s Theatre in Cambridge in 1950. The poster notes that tickets were on sale at the Mandrake Book Store on Boylston Street in Cambridge. Interesting period-style illustration of a beer quaffer blathering over the cantilevered corpse of Finnegan. The original performances were in April of 1955; this return engagement ran for little more than a week in late November and early December 1955. OCLC locates no copies of the poster although copies of Manning's adaptation in book form published by the Harvard University Press are plentiful. We found a black and white rendition of the poster image online on a French blog but could find no illuminating information there. Presumably these posters would have been extremely ephemeral. CARTAS A HARRIET
ILUMINURAS. new. JOYCE, James
Chamber Music.
London: Elkin Mathews 1907. Love and laughter song-confessed / When the heart is heaviest First edition first issue of the author's first book prompting his resignation from his employment at a bank two months before publication. "These delicate lyrical verses were the work of the young poet of the college years and later" contrasting with the fiction which proved "a reversal of the earlier mood and view of the world" Costello p. 273. Publication took place on 10 May 1907 in a run of 509 copies which were not all bound at once. This first issue is slightly larger in size bound in a light green cloth with thick laid endpapers showing horizontal chain lines and it has the poems in signature C well-centred. The second and third variants were bound up in dark green cloth a few years later. They are both trimmed slightly smaller leaving the poems in signature C poorly centred. This copy is from the library of Geoffrey Arundel Whitworth CBE 1883-1951 the founder of the British Drama League who began working for the publisher Chatto & Windus in the same year Chamber Music was published. "Whitworth knew many writers established and new; through him the firm attracted works by such authors as G. K. Chesterton Lytton Strachey and Clive Bell". In 1934 George Bernard Shaw described Whitworth as "one of the most important people in the theatre today" ODNB. His ownership inscription is on the front free endpaper. Small octavo. Illustrated title page. Original light green cloth spine and front cover lettered in gilt. Housed in a dark green cloth chemise and gilt-decorated green morocco slipcase by Rene Patron of Hollywood. Cloth notably sharp notwithstanding mild rubbing and darkening of spine spots of soiling to a couple of leaves. A near-fine copy. Slocum & Cahoon A3 first variant. This is the first binding variant according to Smoot and Cahoon A3: "First variant: Thick laid end papers with horizontal chain lines. 16.2 x 11 cm. Poems in signature C well centered on page." Published in a total edition of 509 copies. According to booksellers Bernard Quaritch Bulletin 19 1984 only "fifty or a hundred" copies of the first variant were bound and issued in 1907. Contemporary presentation copies appear in the first binding and it certainly seems plausible that due to low demand only a small number of copies were bound in 1907. Elkin Mathews hardcover

JOYCE, JAMES
CHAMBER MUSIC
New York: B. W. Huebsch 1923. 1st American Edition Stated. Hardcover. VG. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. Type: Book 37 pp. black paper hardcover bdg. with gilt-stamped titling on front board and blind-stamped on spine tec fore edge deckled. Chamber Music is a collection of poems by James Joyce published by Elkin Mathews in May 1907. The collection originally comprised thirty-four love poems but two further poems were added before publication "All day I hear the noise of waters" and "I hear an army charging upon the land". The present is the only American publication authorized by Joyce. Although it is widely reported that the title refers to the sound of urine tinkling in a chamber pot this is a later Joycean embellishment lending an earthiness to a title first suggested by his brother Stanislaus and which Joyce by the time of publication had come to dislike: "The reason I dislike Chamber Music as a title is that it is too complacent" he admitted to Arthur Symons in 1906. "I should prefer a title which repudiated the book without altogether disparaging it." "Although it is widely reported that the title refers to the sound of urine tinkling in a chamber pot this is a later Joycean embellishment lending an earthiness to a title first suggested by his brother Stanislaus and which Joyce by the time of publication had come to dislike . . . In Ulysses Leopold Bloom reflects 'Chamber music. Could make a pun on that.' In fact the poetry of Chamber Music is not in the least bawdy nor reminiscent of the sound of tinkling urine. In 1909 Joyce wrote to his wife 'When I wrote Chamber Music I was a lonely boy walking about by myself at night and thinking that one day a girl would love me.'" Wikipedia "As the title suggests Chamber Music is to be considered a set of songs rather than a collection of poems as Joyce clearly stated in a letter to the English composer Geoffrey Molyneux Palmer 15 July 1909: 'I hope you may set all of Chamber Music in time. This was indeed partly my idea in writing it. The book is in fact a suite of songs . . .' Besides Palmer a number of composers have set the poems to music including Samuel Barber."
