JOYCE, James
Engraved bookplate.
Paris: 1949. These be my genteelican arms." Finnegans Wake Joyce's posthumous bookplate engraved with the same arms the author used during his lifetime. His father John Joyce based the family arms on those of the Joyces of Galway as described in the 1884 edition of Burke's General Armory. However Burke described them inaccurately leading the writer to inherit armorial deviations such as the eagle not being twin headed. In James Joyce and Heraldry 1986 Michael J. O'Shea argues for the significance of heraldry throughout Joyce's works. "The Joyces had no official grant of arms; moreover no genealogical link has been demonstrated between the armigerous Galway Joyces and the author's Cork ancestors. Nevertheless John Joyce apparently treated his heraldic legacy with care and his son James was known to have a version of the arms hanging on the wall of his various residences in Paris" O'Shea p. 49. It was commissioned from the artist Johnny Friedlaender by La Hune bookshop Paris following their sale of the author's library in 1949. Bookplate engraved with the Joyce coat of arms an eagle gules displayed and charged on the breast with a bar gemel ermine; crest: a demi wolf rampant ducally gorged proper; motto: "Mors aut honorabilis vita". Sheet size: 199 x 150 mm. Couple of spots and creases else fine. unknown

EPIFANIAS
AUTENTICA EDITORA. new. AUTENTICA EDITORA unknown

One of 50 numbered copies from a total edition of 65 including fifteen artist's proofs signed by Susan Weil and Marjorie Van Dyke. With illustrations by Susan Weil and Marjorie Van Dyke in various media: original etchings watercolors collages and decoupage. 1 vols. Folio 38 x 32.5 cm. A stunning visual meditation upon the texts of Joyce's epiphanies executed in original etchings watercolors collages and hand-cut creations printed on various Japanese papers and on Moulin du Gue paper. The collages were executed by Vincent Fitzgerald and Zahra Partovi; the etchings were printed by Van Dyke and Maria Luisa Rojo at the Printmaking Workshop and the lithographs were printed by Van Dyke and Rhae Burden. The calligraphy was executed by Jerry Kelly and the letterpress printed by Dan Keleher and Bruce Chandler at Wild Carrot Letterpress. The texts of the forty epiphanies are printed in full and those selected for interpretation are assigned thematic divisions: "Planes" "Death" "Dreams" and "Games" with Weil undertaking the first two sections and Van Dyke the latter two. The thematic sectional titles to the divisions of the illustrative matter are keyed numerically to the relevant epiphanies in the text.

A notable production singled out for notice in several key exhibitions including selective shows by Franklin Furnace and the Boston Athenaeum. Joyce, James
Exiles. A Play in Three Acts
New York: B.W. Huebsch 1918. First edition. Fine/Near Fine. Published simultaneously with the English edition on May 25 1918 see Slocum & Cahoon 14 and 15. A Fine copy of the book in Near Fine dust jacket. vi 154 pp. Publisher's green cloth over tan blindstamped boards. A touch of foxing to edges and top edge dusty otherwise clean throughout. Dust jacket rubbed and a bit foxed with just a few short tears to the rear panel. Overall a very appealing copy of Joyce's only play.

Exiles captures the romantic dramas of Richard and Bertha a common-law couple recently returned to their home country of Ireland and the complex dynamics that play out between them Richard's cousin Robert and Robert's wife Beatrice. "The play was not especially popular at the time and is commonly regarded as one of Joyce's weaker works. However much of the initial criticism may have had to do with the play's provocative themes: unconventional relationships jealousy weakened national ties to Ireland and exile. All of these topics resonate with Joyce's personal life making Exiles a partly autobiographical work" James Joyce Foundation.

After W.B. Yeats refused to stage the play Joyce unsuccessfully attempted to interest theatrical companies throughout England Ireland and the United States. Exiles eventually debuted in German translation in Munich in 1919. Of the premiere Joyce wrote: "Complete fiasco. Row in theatre. Play withdrawn. Author invited but not present.Thank God" Morgan Library. The play was not performed in English until a staging at New York's Neighborhood Playhouse in 1925.

Slocum & Cahoon 15. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. B.W. Huebsch unknown

Exiles: A Play in Three Acts Including Hitherto Unpublished notes by the Author.

Joyce James. Exiles: A Play in Three Acts Including Hitherto Unpublished notes by the Author. New York: Viking Press 1951. First Printing of the First Viking Edition . This edition was limited to 1900 copies for public sale. A Near Fine copy in a Very Good plus clipped dust jacket with a small chip near the top edge of the spine and a small water spot at the front fold of the jacket flap else a very collectible copy. Slocum A-16. The author notes included in this edition of Exiles were uncovered after Joyce's death and appear here for the first time. "Exiles" draws on the story of "The Dead" the final short story in Joyce's story collection Dubliners. The basic premise of Exiles involves a love triangle between Richard Rowan a Dublin writer recently returned from exile in Rome Bertha his common law wife and his old friend Robert Hand a journalist. There are obvious parallels to be drawn with Joyce's own life – Joyce and Nora Barnacle lived unmarried in Trieste during the years the fictional Rowans were living in Rome while Robert Hand is roughly the same age of Joyce's friends Oliver St. John Gogarty and Vincent Cosgrave and shares some characteristics with them both. This arrangement is slightly complicated by a second love triangle involving Rowan Hand and Hand's cousin Beatrice Justice. The fictional Beatrice who in the play has recovered from a life-threatening illness is just two years younger than Joyce's cousin Elizabeth Justice who died in 1912.
Viking Press, hardcover
