With original envelope addressed to Miss Edie Kelly in Cork congratulating her on her upcoming marriage. Enclosed is a small oval photo mounted on heavier white stock measuring approx. 4 x 2.5 inches. Points in favor of this photo being THE James Joyce: Joyce would have been 17 entering University College in Dublin at the time about the age of the person depicted. Joyce's older brother was Stanislaus and the middle name of his father. A friend of Joyce's father named Kelly from southern Ireland near Cork would visit the Joyces in Bray with his several children when James and Stanislaus were youths. Points against this identification: early pictures of Joyce show a lad who looks only a little like the one in this picture. Stanislaus was teaching in Trieste in 1914 had no known connection to the Capuchins and in fact had a strong anti-Catholic bias. Joyce's signature in 1899 was more flowery with rounded J's although he could have signed this later on as this bears more of a resemblance to his mature signature. And finally there was a Father Stanislaus Kavanagh 1876-1965 who was probably there in Dublin in 1914; he became a major archivist of Capuchin Irish historical documents and Stanislaus is not that uncommon a name in Ireland. Still the connections are intriguing. We paid $200 for this at an online auction about 15 years ago from an Irish woman and were attempting to put a price on it more in line with what Joyce signed photos should fetch. Now after all this time we've lost a bit of our original faith forgive us Father Stanislaus! and have priced it accordingly downward enough to feel we've made a small profit if we sell this. unknown
