Ulysses
Dijon France: Maurice Darantiere The is a curious First Edition copy of James Joyces's ULYSSES. The book is lacking the preliminary pages title page copyright and starts with the famous 1st text page: " Stately plump Buck Mulligan came from the stairhead. the pagination ends on pages 732 with Trieste-Zuerich-Paris 1914 - 1921. Followed by " Ulysses Additional Corrections" on pages 734 - 736 and printers information at the bottom of page 736 : PRINTED FOR SYLVIA BEACH BY MAUCRICE DARANTIERE AT DIJON FRANCE. Plain carboard covers with linen-taped spine and lettering Joyce Ulysses. Lacking the famous blue papcovers for the wrappers. According to Slcum & Calhoun :"The fourth fifthe and sixth printings were issued in white covers with the title and author printed in blue on the front cover and spine. The fourth and fifth were printed on thick paper of inferior quality and had Price: Sixty Francs printed on the back cover. In the fourth fifth and sixth printings the text was corrected for the errata which had been issued with the second and third printings but more typographical errors which had been discovered were listed as Ulysses Additional corrections and included in the regular pagination pp. 733-736. The seventh printing issued in blue covers with title and author in white also contained these From this information it would appear that the presence of the "Additional corrections" would indicate a later printing it could be 4th 5th 6th or 7th.corrections. I Text and pages clean without scribbles . Would obviously need TLC and rebinding. First Edition. Fair. Maurice Darantiere unknown

London. 1967. Bodley Head. Sixth Impression. Previous Owener's Name Penned in Front Otherwise Very Good in Worn Dustjackets. Book Has Two Dustjacket - One Is A Movie Tie-in Jacket & The Other A Regular Solid Green Trade Edition Jacket. 939 pages. hardcover. FROM THE PUBLISHER - ULYSSES is a novel by James Joyce first serialized in parts in the American journal The Little Review from March 1918 to December 1920 and then published in its entirety by Sylvia Beach on February 2 1922 in Paris. It is considered one of the most important works of Modernist literature. ULYSSES chronicles the passage through Dublin by its main character Leopold Bloom during an ordinary day June 16 1904. The title alludes to the hero of Homers Odyssey Latinised into Ulysses and there are many parallels both implicit and explicit between the two works e.g. the correspondences between Leopold Bloom and Odysseus Molly Bloom and Penelope and Stephen Dedalus and Telemachus. June 16 is now celebrated by Joyces fans worldwide as Bloomsday. ULYSSES totals 250000 words from a vocabulary of 30000 words with most editions containing between 644 and 1000 pages. Divided into 18 episodes as they are referred to in most scholarly circles the book has been the subject of much controversy and scrutiny since its publication ranging from early obscenity trials to protracted textual Joyce Wars. ULYSSESs groundbreaking stream-of-consciousness technique careful structuring and highly experimental prose - full of puns parodies allusions - as well as for its rich characterizations and broad humour has made the book perhaps the most highly regarded work in Modernist writing. inventory #28680 hardcover
