HUXLEY, Aldous (intro); WEISSBERGER, Jose A (ed).
They Still Draw Pictures!
New York: Spanish Child Welfare Association of the American Friends Service Committee 1938. The elaborate bestiality of modern war First edition signed limited issue number 57 of 100 copies signed by Huxley. Created to raise money for the Quakers to distribute food in Spain the pioneering collection gathers 60 artworks produced by children during the Spanish Civil War. This copy retains the scarce donation form. An accompanying exhibition opened at the Lord & Taylor department store in New York City then travelled to museums in Boston and Worcester. By shining a light on the lives of children within Spain the project "was not just about denouncing the situation endured by these minors. They meant to open up a space where the latter could directly retell their own experiences" Fernández-Fontecha. This was one of the first times that "the image of children as innocent victims was visually developed within a war context" and contemporaneously to the conflict Fernández-Fontecha. Octavo. Captioned illustrations throughout. Original spiral-bound red card wrappers silver title label printed in blue on front cover. Rubbing to extremities nick to foot of front wrapper occasional offsetting from captions. A very good copy. Bromer B54.2. Leticia Fernández-Fontecha quoted in "Eighty years later book of children's drawings prefaced by Aldous Huxley sees the light in Spain" El País 16 July 2019. unknown

Huxley, Aldous
Those Barren Leaves
New York: George H. Doran Company 1925 First American limited edition. One of 250 numbered large paper copies signed by Huxley this being number 221. Publisher's half white parchment over green-gray boards brown label lettered in gilt to spine and top edge gilt; in its original white dust jacket with "five dollars net" printed to front flap lettered in black with publisher's device to front panel. Very good book with some toning and scratches to spine a tiny chip to spine label text unaffected early owner's bookplate to front pastedown and Holliday Bookshop ticket to rear pastedown; very good or better unclipped dust jacket with some toning to spine shallow chipping to spine ends horizontal crease to jacket presumably from being folded a touch of staining to rear panel and a small closed tear to top edge of rear panel. Overall a clean copy in an attractive example of the exceedingly scarce original dust jacket. Those Barren Leaves is a satirical novel that attacks the superficiality of cultural elitism. Specifically it tells the story of Mrs. Aldwinkle and her companions who gather in Italy to recreate the literary achievements and cultural glory of the Italian Renaissance. However each member of the group which includes a philosopher a poet and a novelist among others proves in his or her own way to fall short of Mrs. Aldwinkle's expectations of grandeur. The book's title is derived from Wordsworth's poem "The Tables Turned" which concludes with the stanza: "Enough of Science and of Art; / Close up those barren leaves; / Come forth and bring with you a heart / That watches and receives." . Signed by Author. First American Limited Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included. New York: George H. Doran Company hardcover

Typed Letter Signed
<p>"Aldous Huxley" Llano CA March 1 1946. A letter with fine literary content to Gerald Kahan concerning the film rights to "Brave New World": "Your letter has been forwarded to me from Harpers. The dramatic rights to Brave New World were given some years ago to a man who is at present raising such difficulties about his rights that a projected screen version of the book has had to be abandoned. This being so I cannot grant permission for a dramatization such as you propose. It would only complicate a situation which is difficult and unpleasant enough as it is. But such alas is life." 4to 1 page with holgraphed addressed envelope signed "Huxley" in return address portion.</p>
