HUXLEY, THOMAS HENRY
Obituary Notices of Fellows Deceased. Charles Darwin. - HUXLEY'S OBITUARY OF DARWIN
London Harrison and Sons 1888. 8vo. In later full blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine. In "Proceedings of the Royal Society of London" vol. XLIV. Entire volume offered. Soiling to extremities endges of front board torn and upper front hindge with small tear. Library label pasted on to front free end-paper. Vague blindstamp to title-page of volume. Internally fine and clean. Darwin's orbituary; I-XXV pp. Entire volume: viii 464 XXXV 1 pp.

First appearance of Huxley's famous obituary of Darwin. "While Huxley was composing this and other expositions of technical education in the late 1880s he was also writing an obituary notice on Darwin for the Proceedings of the Royal Society. Though he undertook this piece in 1883 he did not complete it until five years later. In letters to Foster and Hooker in early 1888 Huxley remarked that he was still rereading Origin of Species trying to separate the "substance" of the theory from its "accidents" with the aim of warding off a generation of "hostile comments and would-be improvements.". Even though he had written at least a half-dozen abstracts of the work and was reading it he said "for the nth time" he was "getting along slowly" and finding it "one of the most difficult books to exhaust that ever was written." At this juncture in his life it seemed that Huxley had difficulty concluding what he had always concluded previously about Darwin's theory: that its points of central importance were the facts of variation the Malthusian principle of overpopulation and its consequence universal struggle. As Huxley finally came around to saying once again the obituary article it was immaterial how organisms differed from each other or why." White Thomas Huxley: Making the 'Man of Science P. 152Darwin-Online A344. hardcover

New York: D. Appleton and Company 1863. First American edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo. 5 4-150 8 including 6 unnumbered pages of publisher's advertisements pp. Dark green pebbled cloth with paper label on the spine light yellow endpapers and pastedowns. Brush a surgeon in the US Navy from the time of the Civil War until his death in 1895 tiny collector's sticker on the front pastedown and a brief inscription on the final page indicating Brush completed reading the book on May 29 1865 on board the steamship Guatemala near Puntarenas with Professor Seebach on board Karl von Seebach was a well-known geologist at Gottingen who published work on Central American volcanos and was presumably returning from the extended trip he made to perform this research. ADB: Seebach Karl Albert Ludwig von; Oxford DNB Adrian Desmond "Huxley Thomas Henry"; Suffolk County News New York March 7 1902 p. 3. Huxley was an early advocate of Darwinism and in fact was the first to use the term 'Darwinism' and did much to popularize and support the theory of evolution in the nineteenth century. The present work is based on lectures delivered by Huxley during the period 1860 - 1863 in which he explained Darwin's ideas to a more popular audience. An attractive copy of this book from an important period in the history of science. A Very Good volume with toning to the first and final blank leaves a few traces of minor discoloration to the cloth and darkening and a tiny bit of loss to the spine label. D. PHILOSOPHICAL ESSAYS sp.title Privately Bound Collection of 35 Papers 1876-1895 Mostly from the Journal 'Nineteenth Century'
Hardcover. VG. 16.5 Cms x 24.5 Cms. This collection is fairly lavishly bound with gilt decorated panelled leather sp. with 2 labels and marbled boards clean & unworn bar some very minor rubbing to bottom edge extremities all quite unrubbed or bumped internally the supplied brown endpapers & pastedowns are clean unmarked and quite undamaged. The papers are all- from The Nineteenth Century bar 2 from Fortnightly Review and one from Contemporary Review. 3 by Huxley 4 by Romanes 3 by the Duke of Argyll 4 by St.J.Mivart 2 by Max Mullerone each by Herbert Spencer Lewes Lombroso Kropotkin and Lankester others by less well-remembered figures. Nearly all are on some aspect of the evolutionary thought religion or both. There seems to be no rhyme or reason in the order although Huxley's trio are all at the beginning. Fuller details on request. Occ. light pencilled marginal marking occ.brown spotting. The binding has been quite painstaking with first pages often carefully pasted to verso of final pages. Both aesthetically attractive as a binding and extremely useful to anyone researching the popular evolution-religion debate during this period. Appears to date from before 1914.

hardcover
