Cover art by Leo and Diane Dillon. Prior to inventing Dianetics and inspiring The Church of Scientology when L. Ron Hubbard was first writing science fiction he sat in a bar with fellow science fiction writer A. E. van Vogt and said "Writing for a penny a word is ridiculous. If a man wanted to make a million dollars the best way would be to start his own religion." He certainly proved that statement to be true. Scientologists everywhere deny that Hubbard ever said any such thing of course. Lloyd Eshbach was another one of the authors to whom L. Ron Hubbard expressed his desire for money. In 1949 he told Eshbach "I'd like to start a religion. That's where the money is." About this particular story Hubbard said "There is one thing which I wish the reader could keep in mind throughout and that is: this story is wholly logical for all that will appear to the contrary. It is not a very nice story nor should it be read alone at midnight - for it is true that any man might have the following happen to him. Even you today might lose four hours from your life and follow then in the course of James Lowry." Hours - and a hat - were missing from James Lowry's life. If he didn't find them he would bo mad. At that point the magazine had some major success. In 1937 John W. Campbell took over as editor. And some of the greatest sf writers ever were being published there: Isaac Asimov; A E. van Vogt; Robert A. Heinlein. the list goes on like a Who's Who of early Science Fiction. Campbell had never been fond of the magazine's name but it wasn't until 1960 that he changed the title to Analog Science Fiction & Fact; he had long wanted to get rid of the word Astounding in the title which he felt was too sensational. Henry Kuttner and his wife Catherine Lucille Moore were very prolific fantasy and science fiction writers until Kuttner died in 1958. Although C. L. Moore continued to write for awhile after he was gone she virtually abandoned the genre. Henry was a member of the Lovecraft Circle and wrote some truly terrifying horror stuff for Weird Tales. And Catherine was voted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame in 1998. Mimsy Were the Borogoves was filmed in 2007 as The Last Mimzy directed by Robert Shaye and starring Chris O'Neil Rhiannon Leigh Wryn Joely Richardson Timothy Hutton Kathryn Hahn Michael Clarke Duncan and many others.
