‎UPHAM Edward.‎

‎Rameses; An Egyptian tale: With historical notes Of the Era of the Pharaohs.‎

‎Quotation from Bossuet Histoire Universelle tome ii. In three volumes. Printed for G.B. Whittaker Ave-Maria-Lane; John Upham Bath; and Charles Upham Exeter 1824. 3 Vols. Post 8vo; pp.viii341i printer’s imprint; iv321i printer’s imprint; iv328; publisher’s quarter dark green linen cream boards paper spine label; a.e. uncut. Spines repaired almost invisibly with matching cloth; paper covering of boards worn at some corners and dusty; old armorial library stamp on each title leaf but no other signs of library use; marginal stains on pp.101-104 of volume three; some foxing to Notes of volume two and to a few scattered gatherings towards the end of volume three apparently indicative of a different paper stock; otherwise and in general effect a very nice copy. From the author’s Advertisement: “It may seem objectionable to exhibit Egypt as possessing at so early a period of the world knowledge and science in certain branches of learning and art surpassing all that the moderns with the advantages of the experience and wisdom of ages can produce. The Notes contain the evidence and authority for such a representation of the wisdom of the Egyptians. The comparison of ancient historians with modern travellers has furnished the materials and groundwork of the tale. The author wished to comprise as large an extent of information respecting the rites arts and public monuments of the Egyptians as possible; and it has been his study to keep within the limits of historic evidence confirming and illustrating his details by ample notes which contain such various and important matter from the earliest historians as must interest even the general reader.†The Notes placed at the end of each volume comprise some 125pp. The result of the author’s concern with historical records is that the story is overwhelmed with descriptive detail and is not fantasy as with most Egyptian novels of the period but almost ‘lost race’ telling of marvels not obviously achievable in terms of the science of the 1820s though not intended to be science fiction. Minor science fiction elements do however occur. In volume two at p.10 for example we learn that “the lamp of wonderful workmanship burned with the amianthus which was framed by the skill of Mizraim science to last for ages unconsumed and contained a potent mixture indestructible by its perpetual flame†and at pp.123-4 in volume three it is stated that the oldest of the Egyptian records hark back to a time when the year consisted of only 360 days. Well printed apart from the few foxed gatherings on good paper by Thomas Davison at Whitefriars. Garside Raven and Schöwerling 1824: 92; not in Sadleir or Locke’s Spectra; Wolff 6925 recording a copy in pale-blue boards and labels: it is also known in similar cream boards. All books listed by Robert Temple are first editions unless otherwise stated. hardcover‎

‎GERRARE Wirt ie. William Oliver Greener. i. e.‎

‎The warstock: A tale of tomorrow.‎

‎By Wirt Gerrare. London W.W. Greener 68 Haymarket London S.W. and St. Mary’s Square Birmingham 1898. Leaf bearing printer’s imprint on recto blank on verso followed by 4pp. publisher’s advertisements at end; pp.xvi218ii4; bevelled horizontally fine-ribbed moiré metallic blue cloth lettered and blocked wiith author’s signature gilt on front cover and spine; t.e.g. others uncut; end-papers printed with floral pattern in pale lime green. Slight fading to cloth cover on front cover and spine; otherwise a virtually fine copy. Hard-core science fiction. The first issue copies also being known in pink cloth lettered in light red with all edges cut. Locke Spectrum I p.90 writing more than fifty years ago describes this title as “one of the easier science fiction titles of the 1890s to findâ€. We suspect that a small cache had been discovered at about that time: in thirty-eight years of trading this is the first copy we have seen though we have had copies of two of his other books. The publisher besides being a relative appears to have been a dealer in sporting guns etc. and himself wrote several standard books on the history and handling of guns that were published by Cassell. His own firm published translations of them into French German Spanish and Russian as well as publishing at least one book by an early pioneer in South Africa. COPAC records only the British Library Cambridge and Trinity College Dublin copies; Bleiler 1948 p.126; Clute and Nicholls p.491; Clarke ‘Tale of the Future’ 1961 p.41: “An ideal state organised by inventors.â€. Re-cased with the original somewhat frayed back-strip laid on; end-papers repaired at gutters with near-matching paper; slight dusting passim and a few leaves a little frayed or creased at extreme blank fore-margins; a good copy only of a difficult title. Juvenile. From the library of Eric Quayle but without sign of provenance. Despite having a different publisher the design of the covers is uniform with that of ‘The Purgatory of Peter the Cruel’ issued the year previously. The ‘plain’ issue published at 5s. There was also a hand-coloured issue published at 7s 6d. It is something of a surprise to find that the publisher should have thought it worth while hand-colouring the advertisement slip in a plain issue of the book. Hand-coloured advertisement slips must in any case be very scarce! Griset is described on it as “The English Gustav Doréâ€. Comic stories involving magical elements of various sorts. ‎MAC DONALD George.‎

‎Phantastes: A Faerie Romance for Men and Women.‎

‎By George Mac Donald Author of “Within and Without.†London: Smith Elder and Co. 65 Cornhill 1858. The right of Translation is reserved. Pp.iv323i blank; publisher’s inserted 16pp. catalogue at end dated September 1858 headed “Works in the Press†and including this title as the seventh entry; olive green near horizontal straight grain morocco cloth ruled and blocked blind on sides ruled blocked and lettered gilt on spine; t.e. uncut others rough-trimmed; end-papers coated dark cream; binder’s ticket of ‘Westleys / & Co / London’ Ball 103 C on back paste-down. Almost invisibly re-cased without disturbing the front end-papers; back end-papers neatly strengthened at hinge with matching paper visible only on the paste-down; cloth of spine a trifle faded and showing slight wear at extreme head and tail; faint damp-streak to cloth of front cover; one gathering slightly proud but not loose; removable light pencilled notes on margins of one page; otherwise a very nice copy. The first issue with the earliest advertisements and the probable first issued state of the binding. Wolff 4296d records a presentation copy sent direct from the publisher in this binding though he also records an anomalous copy in blue-green ripple-grain cloth differently blocked and lettered but with the same catalogue which may have been a binding trial. Locke ‘Spectrum’ p.146 recording a copy similar to this; Sadleir 1479 recording a copy with advertisements dated July 1859. Both note the extreme scarcity of this title in good or even acceptable condition - the Locke copy having the joints repaired and being otherwise only ‘fairly good’. Gatherings Q and R are here signed also with a dagger which may perhaps indicate substitutions revisions having possibly been made during the course of printing. Macdonald’s best known book which may have had influence both on ‘The Night Land’ and some of the writings of Lord Dunsany. ‎Stephen Archer And other tales.‎

‎London: Sampson Low Marston Searle & Rivington Crown Buildings 188 Fleet Street 1882. All rights reserved. 2 Vols. bound in one as issued; half-title not called for; no separate title leaf to second volume; Contents and fly-title leaves to first story present for each volume the fly-title to volume one reading ‘The gifts of the child Christ’ that to volume two ‘Stephen Archer’; pp.iv283i blank; ii268; bevelled diagonally very fine ribbed scarlet cloth ruled and blocked blind on back cover ruled and blocked black blocked and lettered gilt on front cover and spine; top- and lower- edges uncut fore-edges rough-trimmed; end-papers coated pale yellow. Slight fading to cloth of spine and slight rubbing to its gilt; very slight embrowning to poor quality paper throughout; otherwise and in effect a fine copy of a rare title. A re-issue of the first edition sheets published probably in December 1881 but bearing the date 1882 as a two-decker under the title ‘The Gifts of the Child Christ and other stories’ the present issue representing its first appearance under the altered name. This two volume in one re-issue is virtually unrecorded though a one volume edition was published under this title at 6/- the next year. It seems possible that the two-decker - intended for libraries - was printed short and that very few copies were left to be bound up two volumes in one. Not in Sadleir under either title nor included in either of the extensive Wolff collections of MacDonald’s works totalling some fifty-six titles!; Locke ‘Spectrum’ II pp.76-7 describing both issues. Short stories including some fantasy. Locke particularly remarks ‘The History of Photogen and Nycteris’ as being “a very unusual children’s fantasy of a lad and a girl brought up in a castle by a were-wolf witch the lad in daytime the girl at night how they meet and of the fate of the witch. Almost science fiction in the way the girl analyses and slowly makes sense of the alien daytime world of which she initially has no knowledge.†The other stories included besides the title stories are ‘The Butcher’s Bills’ ‘Port in a Storm’ and ‘If I had a Father’. ‎BESANT Walter.‎

‎The holy rose Etc.‎

‎With a frontispiece by Fred. Barnard. London Chatto & Windus Piccadilly 1890. Wood-engraved frontispiece with tissue guard; 32pp. publisher’s catalogue at end dated January 1890; dark blue diagonally fine ribbed cloth ruled bright and dull gilt on sides and spine blocked dull gilt on front cover blocked with publisher’s device bright gilt on back cover lettered bright gilt on spine; end-papers printed with an orange branch design in grey green; top-edges uncut fore-edges mainly trimmed. Rules darkened on spine; otherwise a very nice copy. One of two minor binding variants. Copies are also known with a catalogue dated October 1889 and with fore-edges rough-trimmed on the binding of which the dull gilt is replaced by copper except that the centres of the flowers on the front cover are gilt: here they are dull gilt. This is without obvious issue significance as the volume was not published until 1890. Includes the short novel ‘The Inner House’ telling of the social order that developed as a result of a physicist’s discovery of how to make man immortal: an anti-utopia; another ‘The Last Mass’ deals with prophecy. Sadleir 190 giving no details of blocking but recording the October 1889 catalogue; Wolff 449 not recording a catalogue and descibing yet another variant binding probably later with the same design worked in gilt and red. ‎DAVIDSON John.‎

‎A full and true Account of the Wonderful Mission of Earl Lavender which Lasted one night And one day: With a history Of the pursuit of Earl Lavender And Lord Brumm by Mrs Scamler and Maud Emblem.‎

‎By John Davidson. With a frontispiece By Aubrey Beardsley. London: 12 York Buildings Adelphi: Ward & Downey Limited 1895. Lge.post 8vo; frontispiece on art paper with tissue guard; title-page printed in black and red with introductory verse in black on verso; leaf bearing epigraph on recto blank on verso author’s Note two leaves and Contents leaf precede start of text; integral advertisement leaf at end; pp.xii290ii; deep sea-green buckram lettered gilt on front cover and spine; a.e. uncut; end-papers coated deep purple. Some very slight fading of cloth on spine and edges of boards; insignificant crease to corner of front end-paper; otherwise a very nice copy. An amusing and very readable fantasy satire on fin de siécle attitudes in general and particularly those of the decadents and æsthetes including minor episodes of flagellation set in a kind of city existing beneath London. Not entirely fantasy however: the Scottish writer who makes his appearance at the Prosemen’s Club and takes the decision to kill himself because there are only about six books a year that he could write about at length and he is forced to spend all his days reviewing in order to live is not perhaps wholly unconnected with the author himself who was a member of the Rhymer’s Club and did in fact kill himself some fourteen years later for reasons not utterly dissimilar. Clute & Nicholls p.303; CBEL III p.337; Lasner Beardsley bibliography 82: the first binding later copies being in blue cloth. In this copy the following errata and typographical flaws have been noted state or issue significance if any undetermined: p.16 l.12 faint risen space after ‘look’; p.28 l.11 ‘they oung’ for ‘the young’; p.50 l.11 ‘l’ of ‘elbow’ impressed too heavily; p.54 last line ‘o’ in ‘occurred’ broken; p.69 last line ‘g’ in ‘everything’ printed faintly; p.98 l.2 ‘W’ in ‘We’ and l.8 ‘d’ in ‘minds’ broken; p.119 l.7 first ‘p’ in ‘appointed’ battered at tail; p.123 antepenultimate line raised space before ‘Brumm’s’; p.129 l.12 ‘indentity’ for ‘identity’; p.151 l.3 risen space before ‘but’; p.174 l.21 ‘p’ in ‘pushing’ broken; p.177 l.6 risen space after ‘bless’; p.203 l.1 ‘a’ of ‘what’ and l.4 ‘d’ of ‘remind’ broken; p.241 l.13 redundant hyphen before start of line; p.253 l.2 of drop-head ‘THOUHGT’ for ‘THOUGHT’; p.262 l.12 ‘o’ in ‘potion’ broken; p.275 l.5 ‘t’ lacking in first ‘the’ and l.14 ‘W’ in ‘Whipping’ broken. ‎STOCKTON Frank R..‎

‎A novel By Frank R. Stockton. Illustrated by Peter Newell. London and New York Harper Brothers 45 Albemarle Street W. 1898. Blank before half-title; half-tone frontispiece with tissue guard and fifty-one illustrations all on art paper; pp.xii341i blank; vertically fine-ribbed brown cloth blocked silver and black lettered silver-outlined-gilt and gilt on front cover and spine; fore-edges uncut lower-edges rough-trimmed. Fine copy but v.note. The silver and black blocking on the spine is virtually amorphous and of somewhat vague import. It looks like smoke leaking from the lettering of the title. It is possibly an unintentional impression from the foils used for the front cover. Locke ‘Spectrum’ p.206 not noticing the spine blocking; Blanck 18929 refers but does not describe the binding of the English edition; Clarke ‘Tale of the Future’ 1961 p.42 recording the American edition: “In 1947 a scientist leads a submarine expedition to the North Poleâ€. On the evidence of advertisements the English edition would appear to have been published two weeks after the American edition. First book edition later state issue in wrappers preceded by the appearance of the story in ‘Arrowsmith’s Christmas Annual’ for 1883. Copies of any 1883 or 1884 issue - but particularly those in wrappers - are now extremely hard to find. Hubin p.396 but not in fact criminous. The ‘mystery’ is the whereabouts of a long-lost family treasure. Wolverston Grange is a very old and very rambling farmhouse haunted by two ghosts that play little part in the plot a nun and a clergyman - both as it turns out former members of the family that owns the Grange. The nun is laid by the discovery of her perfectly preserved body sealed in a sarcophagus buried in unhallowed ground the clergyman by the discovery of the treasure. ‎STEWART George.‎

‎Shetland Fireside tales; Or The Hermit of Trosswickness.‎

‎By G.S.L. Edinburgh: The Edinburgh Publishing Company. London: Simpkin Marshall & Co. 1877. Pott 8vo; half-title not called for; pp.iv239i blank; brown patterned-sand-grain cloth ruled and blocked blind on back cover black on front cover ruled and lettered gilt on spine. Very slight rubbing to gilt and wrinkling to cloth at extreme lower edge of front cover; two gatherings slightly proud but not loose apparently an original binding fault; faint contemporary ownership inscription on front end-paper v. note; otherwise a nice copy. Very scarce. A linked series of short stories and anecdotes set in the 1740s mostly fantasy or wierd arising out of the superstitious beliefs and customs of the Shetlanders as known to the author in his youth together with a few including the linking story that are criminous. “It is characteristic of a primitaive people that they cling fondly to old manners and customs and so a century may pass over them and leave little or no change in their ideas or modes of life. This fact has enabled the author to place the time of his story about the middle of the last century and yet draw many of its incidents from the experiences of his own boyhood. Old people then living could carry their recollection back to the middle of the previous century; and thus by his own observation together with the testimony of others he has had the means of comparing the manners and the customs of the Shetland peasantry for a period of more than 120 years.†- Author’s note pp.225-6. Written in a mixture of English for the linking story and the longest of the wierd ones Shetland dialect and in places very comprehensible Dutch. The dialect portions are so well done that they form no obstacle to readability and give moreover the very lilt and rhythm of the speech of a people for whom supernatural agencies were as real a part of everyday life as sheep and boats. I say this as one who usually finds dialect unreadable! The ownership inscription reads: “G. Gilfillan / Dundee / 1878†and may possibly be that of George Gilfillan 1813 - 1878 the essayist divine spasmodic poet friend of de Quincey Carlyle etc. who was a minister there but is best remembered to-day through the works of his protégé William McGonagall. The book was reprinted at Lerwick in 1879 possibly as a paperback: it was issued at 1s. 6d. as against the 2s. of the original 1892 1923 1924 and 2012. All editions except the latest are now scarce. Of this first edition COPAC records copies at the British Library Oxford Cambridge Trinity College Dublin The National Library of Scotland and Edinburgh only; not in Bleiler Locke’s ‘Spectrum’ etc. All books listed by Robert Temple are first editions unless otherwise stated. hardcover‎

‎ANDERSON Andrew. A. and WALL Alfred. H..‎

‎A romance of N’Shabé Being A record of startling adventures In South Central Africa.‎

‎By A.A. Anderson And A. Wall. With illustrations. London: Chapman and Hall Limited 1891. All rights reserved. Half-tone frontispiece with tissue guard and seven plates; one plan and one illustration in the text; Z3 a cancel tipped onto a stub; final blank; pp.x366ii; deep dull turquoise fine buckram lettered gilt pictorially blocked black on front cover lettered gilt on spine; a.e. uncut; end-papers coated black. Some fading to spine; school prize stamp in gilt on back cover and prize label dated June 1898 on pastedown; light foxing to some leaves and slight damp-cockling to some top margins; small chip to blank fore-margin of p.225 due to bad opening; in general however a nice copy of a scarce book. The second issue of three the first having Z3 uncancelled and the reading ‘physical’ for ‘psychical’ in the sentence “True he had found his long-lost child; but a daughter’s love could never supply the void left unfilled in his heart soul and intellect; could never give that sense of restful happiness which emanates from the psychical union of husband and wife.†The third state has the reading corrected but no cancel leaf. Lost race adventure story of the discovery of the descendants of Soloman and the Queen of Sheba in the Kalahari desert area involving minor SF elements concerning travel by balloon. Some trouble is taken to give verisimilitude to the details of the story: Anderson is claimed in the Preface to have travelled for thirty years “in the interior of Africa†to have based the story in part on Mashona legends “gathered on the spot†and to himself have encountered “a nearly white race†in the area described; also that “the inscription on the tablet†pictured in the text “is genuine. It was copied from some rocks in the North Kalahara Desert and was the writing of a people who vanished thousands of years ago.†He also provides a description of four distinct races of bushmen and in a couple of places quotes Frazer’s ‘Golden Bough’! Does anyone think here of the ‘Da Vinci Code’ Locke ‘Spectrum’ p.20 recording a copy without the cancel; Bleiler 1978 p.4; Reginald 00253; not in Bleiler 1948 Clute and Nicholls Sadleir or Wolff. ‎NASH Henry.‎

‎Barerock Or The island of pearls.‎

‎Illustrated by Lancelot Speed. London Edward Arnold 37 Bedford Street Strand W.C. All rights reserved N.D. 1891. Extra cr.8vo; half-title not called for; integral wood-engraved frontispiece with tissue guard and sixteen illustrations in text mostly full-page and unbacked; pp.x including frontispiece411i blank; dove grey buckram pictorially blocked brown grey-green flesh-pink and black on front cover and spine lettered black-shadowed gilt and gilt-beaded brown on front cover lettered gilt gilt-beaded brown and black on spine; a.e.g.; end-papers printed with orange-branch design in pale grey-green. Publisher’s label on front cover and rubber-stamp on blank recto of frontispiece; offsetting affecting last two gatherings v. note; otherwise a very nice copy. The Publisher’s File Copy so designated by the rubber-stamp and label. A very early Arnold title published before they had adopted a policy of plain cover designs and unusual among Arnold firsts in not bearing a date. The correct first issue the volume being re-issued in 1894 trimmed down to cr.8vo format. The offsetting from wet sheets affecting the last two gatherings in the present volume may suggest that it was in fact an advance copy or proof. An action-packed juvenile that is a kind of blending of ‘The Coral Island’ with some of Rider Haggard’s African romances but without the factual consistency of setting that gives to them their verisimilitude: it is instead a show-case very often for the author’s ignorance - unnecessary improbabilities ranging from a sailor telling his fellow sailor at sea that it is ‘two o’clock’ to a boa contrictor in Africa! killing its prey with a bite! Includes some lost-race and fantasy elements in particular an episode depending upon mesmerism instructions being transmitted by thought processes alone. Design on front cover slightly rubbed but a nice copy. The first state of the text with the starting page of Chapter VIII being given in the Contents incorrectly as p.110 instead of 113. The presence of the author’s Advertisement leaf would seem to suggest also an early date of issue since its insertion would rapidly have become unnecessary. We believe that the present rather uncommon binding may have been an alternative style issued simultaneously with the more usually seen binding of scarlet buckram ruled and blocked in gilt with a.e.g. and with end-papers surfaced black - the latter binding style having continued in use long after the price had been raised to 8/6d after the First World War copies in that binding being sometimes seen with a dust-wrapper bearing a price increase sticker of that value. ‎PULLEN Henry William..‎

‎The fight At Dame Europa’s school: Shewing how The German boy thrashed the French boy; And how the English boy looked on.‎

‎London: Simpkin Marshall and Co. Salisbury: Brown and Co. The Right of Translation is Reserved. N.D. 1870. Double pott 16mo sewn as a single gathering; half-title not called for; 3pp. Brown and Co. and trade advertisements at end; pp.28iiii blank; light blue-green paper wrappers cut flush printed outside in black the back wrapper advertising translations into French and German as “Now Ready Price Sixpenceâ€; issued without end-papers. Slight foxing of wrappers with offsetting onto facing leaves; otherwise a nice copy. Scarce especially thus. Published “Price Sixpence†as stated on the wrappers. This first edition which was of only 500 copies was printed at Salisbury and bears the printer’s imprint: “Bennett printer Journal Office†on the verso of the title-page and at the end of text. The second and later printings declare their status on the wrappers. Demand was such that printing was transferred to Spottiswoode’s in London at the end of January 1871 and by then 29000 copies had been sold. Subsequent editions published from 1871 onwards were illustrated by T. Nast. The pamphlet ran to at least twenty-seven printings or editions reaching its 193rd thousand in 1874 and was still in print as late as 1914. Though the pamphlet is common in libraries copies of the true first printing in the original wrappers as here are very scarce especially in nice state. All the advertisements in this copy are for Brown & Co.’s publications supported by various London firms with the exception of the last which is for an anonymous three-decker published by Smith Elder and Co. ‘Six Months Hence’. The wrapper advertisements are with regard to the imprint the same as the title-page. Wolff 5670a recording the 50th thousand; Locke ‘Spectrum’ I p.16 and Wolff 5671/1 both recording copies without wrappers and hence of unknown status; not in Sadleir; British Library and National Library of Scotland copies only of the first printing on COPAC. Portsea: Printed and sold by George Alfred Stephens No. 131 Queen Street 1812. F’cap 12mo in half-sheets; half-title apparently not called for; engraved frontispiece on copper dated ‘Portsea May 8 1810’; title-page not conjugate with A6 and probably a cancel; final leaf a single inset; pp.241i blank; contemporary mottled sheep red lettering-piece. Leather cracked at joints but firm on the cords; free end-papers lacking but early reinforced at gutters with strips of paper tipped-on to blank recto of frontispiece and blank verso of final leaf; early ownership signature on blank recto of frontispiece; slight damp-staining to blank upper fore-corners of last gathering; otherwise a nice copy. A very scarce provincial printing.Originally issued stabbed presumably in wrappers. A spirited tale of devils and angels first published in London c.1780 only the Yale copy recorded and followed by four editions published for the author in New York in 1795-6 and further undated English editions speculatively referred to 1800 London Sabine & Son 1810 Portsea George Alfred Stephens and 1812 London again whilst a dated edition was printed in Sheffield in 1814. Given that the title-page in the present copy is a single inset and appears to be a cancel it is tempting to speculate that it is in fact a second issue of the 1810 Portsea edition from the same sheets. There may have been a Portsea printing in 1812 as well however: in the British Library copies of the two Portsea editions the only ones recorded on COPAC the 1812 copy has p.49 misnumbered ‘44’ whereas in the 1810 one it is correctly numbered. In the present copy it is correctly numbered. The present edition differs from the 1800 London printing and presumably the 1780 printing also in that the Preface in those is dated from Warminster Wiltshire. This is left out in the present printing which may perhaps suggest a difference of original copy the London edition reproducing the 1780 text and this possibly being printed from an American original. The author was descended from a family of early New England puritans and spent much of his time in America. All books listed by Robert Temple are first editions unless otherwise stated. hardcover‎

‎STOCKTON Frank R..‎

‎Stockton’s stories Second series: The Christmas wreck And other stories.‎

‎New York Charles Scribner’s Sons 1886. Sm.cr.8vo; binder’s blank at front and back; advertisement leaf blank on recto precedes half-title; blank at end; pp.2iv242viii2; bright leaf green buckram lettered gilt on front cover lettered blocked with two asterisks and with short rule gilt on spine; t.e.g.; wove end-papers. Unobtrusive restoration to cloth at extreme head of spine; light foxing of end-papers; one or two small corners creased; otherwise a nice copy. The binder’s blanks each have a conjugate leaf pasted beneath the paste-down. Blanck 18885: the first state of text with ‘Stockton’s stories Second series’ at head of title-page; and the first binding with ‘Stockton’s stories / The Christmas wreck’ on the front cover and ‘Stockton’s Stories / ’ at head of spine the words ‘The Christmas Wreck And other stories’ appearing at the mid-point. Later issues omit the words ‘Stockton’s Stories’ and the series indica from both the title-page and spine. The initial advertisement leaf in the present copy consists of an advert for ‘Stockton’s stories. First Series. â€The Lady or the Tiger†etc which was also presumably later omitted. Copies are also known with laid-paper end-papers. In this copy the word ‘Hyke’ on the Contents leaf is followed erroneously by a comma: state or issue significance undetermined. Nine stories: The Christmas Wreck; A Story of Assisted Fate; An Unhistoric Page; A Tale of Negative Gravity; The Cloverfields Carriage; The remarkable Wreck of the “Thomas Hykeâ€; My Bull-Calf; The discourager of Hesitancy; A Borrowed Month. ‎CARTER Edward Tremlett.‎

‎The Artemis Library: The People of the Moon.‎

‎A Novel. With illustrations by A. d’Aguilcourt. London: “The Electrician†Printing and Publishing Company Limited 1 2 and 3 Salisbury Court Fleet Street N.D. 1895. All rights reserved. Extra cr.8vo; half-title not called for; dedication Contents and List of Illustrations leaves precede start of text; frontispiece and seven half-tone plates; twenty-one illustrations in the text; printer’s imprint leaf at end blank on recto; pp.vi402ii; 8pp. publisher’s inserted advertisements at end; diagonally fine-ribbed cobalt blue buckram-surfaced cloth blocked scarlet on back cover blocked and lettered black scarlet and silver on front cover and spine; a.e. silver; end-papers printed florally in olive. Slight rubbing to head and tail of spine and a couple of small nicks to tailband; lengthy inscriptions on front end-papers and dedication leaf removed v. note; one or two light pencilled notes and other markings mostly marginal and one in ink v. note; some foxing to prelims. and a couple of other leaves; otherwise a very nice copy. Inscribed in ink on the front free end-paper “I. or possibly ‘J’ Mitchell /From the Author.†Something before the ‘Mitchell’ has been overwritten ‘Ms.’ in a darker ink possibly by a daughter and “21st. April 1899.†in the same ink. Since the remainder of the front end-papers are taken up by lengthy quotations from the works of Byron and Tennyson and a reminder of a performance of ‘Lascia ch’io piagna’ written in the same hand and all suggestive of romantic connotations it is a reasonable hypothesis that the dedication leaf dating from some three or four years earlier was either removed by the the author himself before the book was given or contained an inscription that either the original recipient or the later Ms. Mitchell wished to suppress. The original dedication read “This little book is affectionately dedicated to the memory of that dear friend whose name is inscribed in a Devonshire churchyard but whose spirit has passed.†The verso bore two lines from Tennyson’s ‘In Memoriam’ xxiii stanza 4 followed by fourteen from Byron’s ‘Mazeppa’ the opening of stanza VI and these with variations the first two lines of the Byron having been omitted and two added to the Tennyson completing the stanza have here been transcribed onto the front end-papers. The light pencil scoring drawing attention to particular passages may be in two different hands as also the corrections of typos etc. but the reading date ‘May 8th. 1899’ at the end appears to be that of Ms. Mitchell. Attention is certainly being drawn in at least one place to meanings beyond the mere sense of the text. A wavy line on p.305 is drawn beside the passage: “Yet betwixt her and him there was a great chasm fixed; so that it was impossible for him to go to her while it seemed equally impossible for her to ascend to him.â€! Corrections etc. have been made as follows: p.24 ll.9 and last line p.27 l.13 p.54 l.8 and p.72 l.10 ‘s’ of ‘towards’ struck out in pencil; p.28 l.24 ‘my’ underlined and the correction ‘many’ added in the margin; p.147 l.23 ‘lay’ altered to ‘laid’; p.196 l.24 full-stop altered to question-mark; p.198 l.29 after the name ‘Almida’ is pencilled ‘= Truth’. Those to p.147 and p.196 appear not to be authorial but in a different hand presumably that of the recipient. The author who was born in Calcutta in 1866 was privately educated at Bristol and later at the Merchant Venturer’s College in that city and at Bristol University College where he studied physics and engineering joining the staff of ‘The Electrician’ in 1893 and becoming editor in 1897 a post from which he resigned in the Winter of 1899 after becoming ill. He died in 1902 nursed by his wife. A member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers the Société des Ingénieurs Civils de France and Fellow of the Physical Society of London he was deeply interested in physics especially astrophysics and the bearing of astronomical phenomena and history on the evolution theory of the universe. His general interest in science and involvement with the scientific community perhaps prompted him to foresee a number of advances that have since occurred as well as many that have not: anti-gravity telepathy hypnosis air-conditioning television a speech synthesiser that scans and reads books vertical-take-off-and-landing aircraft airships autopilots something resembling atomic energy the use of aluminium in building remote sensors electric lifts elevated electric railways matter transmitters videophones force-shields that only intercept fast-moving objects reconstitutable dried foods superconductors. A book that may have had some influence on H.G. Wells whose ‘First Men in the Moon’ appeared some five of six years later and like this tells of a race of beings living inside a largely hollow moon - though the first section set on Earth is dominated by a character Professor Goss who seems a precursor of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Professor Challenger. Published according to the ‘English Catalogue of Books’ in October 1895. The imprint leaf reads on verso: “London: / Printed by Geo. Tucker Salisbury Court Fleet Street E.C.†the street numbers being given in the advertisements. A very scarce title COPAC recording only the Oxford Cambridge and National Library of Scotland copies; not in Sadleir Wolff Clute and Nicholls or the British Library Catalogue; Locke ‘Spectrum’ I p.48. All books listed by Robert Temple are first editions unless otherwise stated. hardcover‎

‎MAC DONALD George.‎

‎The portent: A Story Of The inner vision of the highlanders commonly Called the second sight.‎

‎London: Smith Elder and Co. 65 Cornhill 1864. The right of Translation is reserved. Post 8vo; half-title not called for; integral advertisement leaf at end; pp.viii290ii; publisher’s quarter parchment ruled lettered and blocked gilt on spine diagonally fine-ribbed grass green cloth sides; t.e.g. fore-edges uncut lower-edges rough trimmed; white end-papers oil-marbled grey and dark blue. Parchment foxed as usual v.note and slightly rubbed at extremities of spine; slight dust-marking to cloth of back cover; white backs of end-papers a trifle foxed with slight offsetting; otherwise a very nice copy. A scarce title not in Sadleir or Wolff’s second collection; Wolff’s first collection 29 and ‘The Golden Key’ p.117 noting the historical importance of this title in the development of supernatural fiction; Locke’s ‘Spectrum’ p.146 recording only a variant of the ordinary issue in brown cloth; Shaberman 18 recording only a variant of the ordinary issue in purple cloth speaks of this title as “being of considerable significance both autobiographically and from the point of view of MacDonald’s evolution as a writerâ€; Bleiler ‘Supernatural Fiction’ 1067 and ‘Checklist’ 1948 p.187. As noted above at least two variant bindings for this title are known apart from that of the present copy which would appear to represent a publisher’s ‘presentation’ style. Though apparently unrecorded in the literature we have come across this binding several times and whilst in a style unusual for its date it is certainly a publisher’s binding: ‘cased’ rather than ‘bound’ and with the spine blocked from brasses rather than tooled. It is unfortunate that the parchment has been laid over white paper to increase its brilliancy and that the paper chosen was of a quality to fox producing the spotty appearance seen more or less in every copy we have come across. All books listed by Robert Temple are first editions unless otherwise stated. hardcover‎

Alfred Coppel Alfredo Jose de Arana-Marini Coppel was an American author. Born in Oakland California he served as a fighter pilot in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II. After his discharge he started his career as a writer. He became one of the most prolific pulp authors of the 1950s and 1960s adopting the pseudonyms Robert Cham Gilman and A.C. Marin and writing for a variety of pulp magazines and later "slick" publishers. Though writing in a variety of genres including action thrillers he is known for his science fiction stories which comprise both short stories and novels. Coppel's first science fiction story was "Age of Unreason" 1947 in Amazing Stories. Other short stories include "The Dreamer" 1952 about a man called Denby who wants to be the first to orbit the moon published in The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction and reprinted in the anthology Best Short Shorts 1958 edited by Eric Berger. His 1960 post-holocaust novel Dark December describes the aftermath of nuclear war. As Robert Cham Gilman he wrote the Rhada sequence of science fiction novels aimed at the young adult market. These space operas set within a galactic empire comprise: The Rebel of Rhada 1968 The Navigator of Rhada 1969 The Starkahn of Rhada 1970 and a prequel called The Warlock of Rhada 1985. The Rebel of Rhada is an expansion with many changes including a significantly different ending of "The Rebel of Valkyr" published in 1950 under his own name and included in Brian Aldiss's collection Galactic Empires. The Burning Mountain: A Novel of the Invasion of Japan 1983 is an alternate history depicting what could have happened if the United States and its allies had been forced to invade Japan in 1946 had the Trinity test of the Fat Man nuclear design tested on July 16 1945 failed. This is based on the Operation Coronet and Operation Olympic United States battle plans for the invasion of Japan which were rendered moot by Japan's surrender after the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. In 1974 he had a bestseller with the suspense thriller Thirty-Four East about the Arab-Israeli conflict. Another political thriller was The Apocalypse Brigade 1981 about the United States at war with global terrorism. . Signed by Author. First Edition. Hard Cover.
