DAW Books Inc. - The New American Library of Canada Limited 1974. Previous Dealer Markings; Light Creasing on Front Rear Covers Spine; Front Cover Spine Moderately Chipped; Rear Cover Lightly Chipped; Edges Lightly Soiled; Slight Yellowing Due to Age. WOE TO ALL WHO DEFY THE NETWORK. BOOK NUMBER: UQ1136. ALSO KNOWN AS: Original edition entitled Das Gedankennetz copyright 1963 by Wilhelm Goldmann Verlag Munchen. TRANSLATION BY: Christine Priest. SYNOPSIS: Herbert W. Franke who is rated as one of the four best science fiction writers of modern Europe is quite tricky. What may seem simple usually turns out to be deceptively complex. What may seem irrelevant may have an impact like an earthquake. In The Mind Net we encounter a vast spacefleet exploring the cosmos. They find some organic remnants in the lifeless soil of an ancient world. But when the space explorers test these mysterious objects they suddenly find their ship trapped in an alien mental web and face a menace never allowed for on their computers. But that is only the beginning and thereafter we encounter seemingly isolated scenes on alien worlds with unearthly growths in mechanical civilizations in rebel cities where everyday people face extraordinary problems. The whole ties in with a shocking impact.and The Mind Net will prove again that the name of Franke ranks with those of Philip K. Dick and Stanislaw Lem as a science fiction innovator. Fraser, Keath
Popular Anatomy
Erin Ontario: The Porcupine's Quill Inc. 1996. Edges Lightly Soiled. READIED FOR THE PRESS BY: John Metcalf. COPY EDITED BY: Doris Cowan. COVER: Cover concept is based on a detail from an oil painting by Paul Rasporich; courtesy of the artist and Keath Fraser photograph Al Harvey; photograph of Canada from space courtesy of Bill Brooks/Masterfile. SYNOPSIS: Spanning three hundred years of imaginary time and four years of real time Popular Anatomy is set in the present and imagined from the future. A perversely historical novel this comic chronicle springs from Vancouver in the inflationary years of the early 1980s. Its galaxy of characters - born and unborn white and black impoverished and professional - all seek a richer closer world against expanding odds. Debt and ruin loom in a crippling recession that succeeds the Year of the Rooster. Touching down in cities from Asia to Africa Central to South America Keath Fraser's triptych is a masterful anatomy of our own ersatz culture holding out some hope of a grand unity through the history of one Canadian city and its increasingly interwoven protagonists. Dwight Irving is a travel agent who loathes travel but who finds this no impediment to fabricating a travel empire of advice and packaged trips through his highly leveraged company Herodotus Tours. His foster charge Aloysius is a brilliant punk-rock orphan from Bombay with an earring and purple hair whose clambering entrepreneurial spirit brings him to trial for trafficking in refugees. A doctor of chiropractic Bartlett Day friend and housemate to the Irvings is a wide and ironic traveller visitor of bone caches from Calcutta to Kampala Phnom Penh to Lima. He is a man disillusioned with his quack profession yet in deep sympathy with his dislocated patients at home. Meditating on time and place home and abroad in quest of unifying metaphors in an illusory world Popular Anatomy is science fiction in the deepest sense. Plot inflates here like Creation itself contracting finally to reconcile fiction and history in a novel of thematic dexterity and virtuoso storytelling. First Edition 2nd Printing. Trade Paperback. Frazee, Steve
"THE SKY BLOCK" BOOKS: The Sky Block / The Sky Block
New York: Lion Library # LL 3 1st Printing 1954 & Pyramid Books # PG 13 1st Printing 1958 ----------2 vintage paperbacks variants of the same title. Frazee wrote mainly westerns this was his only science fiction novel. Originally published in hardcover by Rinehart it had these 2 paperback reprints in the 1950s: Lion in 1954 and Pyramid in 1958. BOTH these reprints are offered here as a "COLLECTOR'S SPECIAL". The front covers of the 2 books both by artist Robert Maguire are similar making one wonder if they were both done at the time of the Lion printing 1954 and then the unused cover was used for the later Pyramid printing 1958. Both books have 158 pages and it is obvious that the same plates were used for both printings. Of interest though is there are slight DIFFERENCES IN THE TEXT of the 2 books. Mild expletives present in the earlier Lion printing are changed or omitted in the later Pyramid printing. For example on page 36 the mild curse "J____ C_____" is present in the Lion version while the Pyramid version eliminates the line of text entirely. Another amusing example is on page 146 where "J____ C_____" from the Lion version is replaced by "For Pete's sake" in the Pyramid! There are likely other examples the bookseller has not done a line-by-line comparison. The bookseller is not attentive enough to have noticed these text variations in a simple reading of the books it is likely that he read something about it decades ago and has forgotten the source of the information not unusual for him as he ages. The Lion has edgewear a corner crease and is VG to VG. The Pyramid has a starting gutter crack spine and reading creases and is VG. Interesting variant editions. . Mass Market Paperback. Very Good. Illus. by Robert Maguire front covers. Note: our prices on Biblio are the LOWEST of any of the sites on which we list our books. New York: Lion Library # LL 3 1st Printing 1954 & Pyramid Books # PG 13 1st Printing 1958 paperback
