Emile Souvestre est un des premiers écrivains à construire une utopie dans laquelle la technique est au centre de la cité et façonne l’organisation sociale. Une société où l'individualisme est devenu la loi, où la recherche du profit motive toutes les relations humaines et qui exhibe, gravée à l'entrée des maisons, sa devise provocatrice : "Chacun chez soi, chacun pour soi". Tel est le tableau menaçant qu'Emile Souvestre dresse de l'an 3000, dans ce Monde tel qu'il sera.
