SYNOPSIS: To the paradise world of Langri comes H. Harlow Wembling a ruthless billionaire promoter. He looks at the sparkling seas magnificent beaches and fascinating plant and animal life and envisions a world-wide vacation resort that will be the financial coup of his life. Langri's human population is no match for his deft manipulations and the charter he obtains makes Langri virtually the private property of Wembling and Company. Construction machines convert vast stretches of the beautiful sea coast into smears of wasteland and so damage the ecology that the natives face imminent starvation. They have only one weapon with which to oppose Wembling. It is the legacy of Cern Obrien a wandering prospector who crashed on Langri and came to love the world and its people. He foresaw what would happen when the Wemblings of the Galaxy arrived and he devised a Plan and taught it to the natives and so overwhelming is their faith in him that they follow it blindly. The vision of the dead Obrien contends with the vision of the living Wembling with the fate of a world in the balance: will Langri be a free world where the natives' unique civilization can survive or will it be a tinseled vacation resort where wealthy strangers throng the beaches and enrich Wembling and Company Will the world of Langri be Obrien's monument - or Wembling's.
