Hamish Hamilton 1951. 1st UK thus 1st impression. Very good/Good.
This novel is ferocious in its condemnation of the effects of drink and poverty in nineteenth century Paris. The French title is untranslatable as such - a place where people go purely to get knocked out hammered out of it - none of the couthy convivial quaffing suggested by this quaintly translated title. Otherwise this is a rare jacketed version of the unexpurgated 1951 translation with a useful introduction by Alan Hodge. There are no marks or inscriptions. Some foxing/spotting but clean cloth covers. The jacket is largely intact not price clipped but some old tape marks. Edges sunned.
. Hamish Hamilton unknown
