‎Scarce offprint issue, with a most interesting presentation inscription to one of the fathers of photography, of Wilde's paper on improvements of his electromagnetic induction machine introduced in 1866. Wilde discovered, independently of Werner von Siemens who is usually credited for the invention, the dynamo-electric machine. Despite Siemens being the one credited for the invention, Wilde was the first to publish a paper describing it" this was communicated to the Royal Society by Michael Faraday in 1866.Joseph Sidebotham (1824-1882) was the first to practice photography in Manchester and of the most important local photographers in general. His interest was, however, not confined to photography he was an amateur botanist, entomologist and astronomer. He was also a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and lectured to the Mechanics Institute on astronomy and electro-magnetism.‎

Photo contrecollée au 1er plat avec titre gravé en dessous.Karl Lagerfeld a mis en scène le célèbre roman d’Oscar Wilde, dans lequel Dorian Gray, jeune dandy londonien d'une rare beauté, fait la connaissance de Lord Henry Wotton, peintre célèbre qui fera son portrait. Fasciné par sa représentation picturale, Dorian, passera un pacte avec le diable : « Si c’était moi qui toujours devais rester jeune, et si cette peinture pouvait vieillir !... Pour cela, pour cela je donnerais tout !... Il n’est rien dans le monde que je ne donnerais... Mon âme, même ! ». Le style de vie de Dorian change radicalement. Il montre toujours une façade policée devant ses pairs, mais il court les bouges les plus infâmes de Londres, à la recherche de plaisirs de plus en plus raffinés. Il s'entoure d'objets rares et précieux, pierreries, parfums, tapisseries, tandis que le tableau petit à petit s'enlaidit, à cause des signes de l'âge et des marques physiques du péché. Pour éviter la découverte de son terrible secret, il enferme le tableau dans une ancienne salle d'étude, mais de plus en plus obsédé par le tableau, re-nonçant à ses résidences secondaires, inquiet dès qu'il le quitte, il vient souvent vérifier la dégradation physique du portrait, avec une certaine jouissance car il continue à ressembler, lui, au jeune homme innocent qu'il était auparavant. Dorian devenu assassin de son ami Basil Hallward, vit désormais dans la peur d'être retrouvé. Las de sa vie il décide de devenir meilleur et de faire acte de rédemption pour que le portrait retrouve son aspect d'innocence, mais en vain. Désespéré, Dorian enfonce le couteau qui a tué Basil dans le tableau, espérant se délivrer du rappel constant de ses crimes…Un homme vieux et hideux sera retrouvé mort en face du tableau qui, lui, a recouvré son aspect premier : l'effigie d'un jeune homme d'une beauté sublime, à l'innocence sans tache. Ce n'est qu'après l'examen des bagues du défunt qu'on reconnaîtra en lui Dorian Gray.Cet ouvrage raconte l’histoire d'Oscar Wilde, comme un roman photo de luxe, avec de magnifiques photographies en couleurs et en noir prises par Karl Lagerfeld, mettant en scène Eva Herzigova et Larry Scottt dans les rôles de Mrs et Mr. Dorian Gray.
