A fine copy in the scarce publishers deluxe burgundy coloured suede binding with yapp edges. Lovely bright and clean gilt decoration and lettering to the front board. Top edge gilt the others untrimmed. Original illustrated end papers. A fine and truly handsome copy of this classic work and a remarkable survivor. The suede bindings of this period are fragile and prone to drying out often resulting in the suede perishing and the yapp edges splitting. Rare in this condition.</p> George G. <p>MASTERFULLY ILLUSTRATED & DECORATED BOOK - REGARDED AS POGANY'S MASTERPIECE - IN ITS MOST ATTRACTVE BURGUNDY SUEDE BINDING</p><p>first edition de-luxe issue in burgundy suede binding large 4to. 32 x 23 cms. 4 colour printed half-title & titlepage 124pp. on silky paper the pages elaborately designed by Pogany using decorative calligraphic lettering for the text inside broad decorative borders and with colour and monochrome illustrations throughout by Pogany most pages printed in two colours 20 pages with tipped in coloured plates by Pogany publisher's full burgandy suede reversed calf with yapp edges upper third of the front cover boldly gilt blocked with a decorative design of a sailing ship in full sail and elaborate gilt title lettering lower two thirds of the front panel with an elaborate bling blocked design very decorative original endpapers designed by Pogany and printed in shades of buff top edges gilt other edges untrimmed minor wear to foot of spine with loss of the projecting yapp edge else a nice copy. A most attractive book both internally and externally.</p><p>This beautiful and lavishly illustrated book was issued in two forms: a a special signed edition of 525 signed copies bound in tan calf and b this in fact more attractive de luxe binding of full suede. The binding of the suede issue was fragile especially at the edges and copies as well preserved at this are rare.</p><p><br />The colophon at the end states "The letterpress and line illustrations were printed by Vincent Brooks Day and Son Ltd. and the four-colour plates by Benrose Dalziel Ltd. at London in the Year of Our Lord NCMX". <br />A trade edition was issued later considerably smaller in format and with the decoration on the pages greatly reduced but retaining the 20 tipped-in coloured plates. That trade edition appears to have been issued in several binding in both morocco and in cloth.</p> George G. Harrap hardcover

First trade edition with Pogany's illustrations; large 4to 330 x 254 mms; illustrated endpapers richly decorated half-title & title-page with gilt highlights twenty tipped-in colour plates calligraphic text 10 illustrations in line with colour backgrounds 6 with colour borders 22 decorations in 2 colours 30 vignettes minor spotting to prelims; original suede binding and therefore scarce yapp edges elaborately decorated pictorial board with lettering in gilt VG despite fading and some minor loss to extremities crinkled yapp edges otherwise a very good example.<br /> A very good copy of undoubtedly the illustrator's best work and one of the poet's three most critically acclaimed poems the other two being Kubla Khan and Christabel.<br /><br />Willy Pogány 1882-1955 renowned Hungarian book illustrator was a master of dreamy and warm pastel scenes through water-colours oil paintings and especially pen and ink. Painstakingly detailed and confident Pogány's drawings portray the true extent of his talent. The Ancient Mariner is recognised as his masterpiece.<br /><br />From 1924 Pogány worked as an art director on several Hollywood films including Fashions of 1934 and Dames.
