Recently re-bound in red full morocco with raised bands and gilt decoration to spine gilt titles to a black label to upper and further gilt decoration to upper. All edges gilt and marbled endpapers. Black ink ownership of Aida Foster to half-title dated December 1910 and some light spotting to first few leaves otherwise internally clean. A crease to plates facing 'Here with a loaf of bread' and 'For in and out'. Presented in an attractive new leather binding. Very good. 'Ah make the most of what we yet may spend / Before we too into Dust descend'. Polymath poet philosopher and scientist Khayyam was one of the greatest minds of the Islamic Golden Age whose enduring presence in the Anglophone world was cemented by the translations of FitzGerald. Ltd. circa 1930. . 8vo 230 x 160mm; printed in blue and black with boarders and decorations in addition to the 16 tipped-in colour plates all by Willy Pogany slight age-toning to text block otherwise near-fine; publishers black morocco blind embossed with gilt and red decorations and lettering marbled endpapers top edge gilt slight rubbing to fore-edge of upper board otherwise near-fine; with the original cardboard box bearing label; 'OMAR No. 2 Antique leather three lid corners split otherwise still sound.<br /> A handsome copy of The Rubà iyà t of Omar Khayyà m with colour-plate illustrations after the Hungarian artist Willy Pogany 1882-1955.<br /><br />The edition was based on Fitzgerald's translation first published in 1859. The poem presents an interesting challenge to any reader trying to sort through its profound symbolism and not-so-obvious theme and gained recognition over the course of the nineteenth century as a growing 'cult of the Rubáiyát' found expression in 'the Omar Khayyám Clubs of England and America' Yohannan p. 202.<br /> London, George G. London: George G. Harrap. hardcover. fine. Pogany Willy. Beautifully illustrated by Willy Pogany with 16 tipped-in color plates and ornate marginal designs and initials printed in turquoise. Unpaginated. 8vo magnificently bound by Riviere & Son in full black crushed morocco with a large multi-color oval inset on the front cover depicting Eve in front of the apple tree with lurking snake the whole surrounded by an elaborate grape vine with leaves & fruit. The back cover has an identical oval enclosing a snake entwined around a gilt wine glass. The spine with raised bands is elaborately gilt as are the dentelles; all edges gilt. London: George G. Harrap no date circa 1935. An immaculate copy preserved in a cloth slipcase.<br/> <br/> George G. Harrap unknown

Willy Pogany. 16mo 6 3/4" x 4 1/2" decorative limp red leather with gilt lettering on spine lapped fore-edges and elaborate Art Nouveau title on spine & front cover 12 lovely half-tone illustrations by Willy Pogany tipped in plus curvacious sepia Art Nouveau decorations thgoughout; top of page edges gilt t.e.g.; marbled endpapers 92 93-94 pages. The translation is the famous one by Edward Fitzgerald unspecified and the art work uses some illustrations that Willy Pogany executed for famous Harrap 1909-edition. <br /> <br /> "Willy" Pogany 1882 – 1955 was a prolific Hungarian illustrator of children's and other books. Pogany's artistic style is heavily fairy-tale oriented and he used dreamy and warm pastel scenes with watercolors oil paintings and especially pen and ink.<br /> <br /> Edward Fitzgerald's translation remains the most famous memorable and widely used.<br /> <br /> A LOVELY VERY GIFTABLE petite edition with charming illustrations by Willy Pogany. Firm clean copy in a clean limp leather binding with bright gilt and little shelf wear. Slight wear to corners. Paper lightly and purposefully toned to suggest parchment. The half-tone illustrations by Pogany are unfoxed and bright. Hand to read name of previous owner penned on the upper right of the dark marbled front flyleaf. All-in-all: A charming little volume.
