A crease to plates facing 'Here with a loaf of bread' and 'For in and out'. Presented in an attractive new leather binding. Very good. Pogany's artistic style is heavily fairy-tale oriented and he used dreamy and warm pastel scenes with watercolors oil paintings and especially pen and ink.<br /> <br /> Edward Fitzgerald's translation remains the most famous memorable and widely used.<br /> <br /> A LOVELY VERY GIFTABLE petite edition with charming illustrations by Willy Pogany. Firm clean copy in a clean limp leather binding with bright gilt and little shelf wear. Slight wear to corners. Paper lightly and purposefully toned to suggest parchment. With twelve mounted colour plates including a frontispiece an original etching signed in pencil by Pogany following the frontispiece and additional vignette illustrations laid down. A superb edition printed on fine handmade paper. With a note-card in black ink loose to preliminaries reading: 'This book was given to my father Edwin A. Neugass by his friend Willy Pogany.' Publisher's blue-green full morocco with elaborate gilt titles to spine and on-laid circular floral motif to upper. Top edge gilt others untrimmed. Presented in a matching cloth-covered clamshell box with gilt titles to spine and fleece lining. An exceptional copy showing no sunning to spine. Light to moderate spotting throughout. Some bumping to corners and a touch of light general wear to binding otherwise a lovely near fine example. 'Ah make the most of what we yet may spend / Before we too into Dust descend.' Polymath poet philosopher and scientist Khayyam was one of the greatest minds of the Islamic Golden Age whose enduring presence in the Anglophone world was cemented by the translations of FitzGerald.
