King of Sweden' illustrated with a frontispiece. This work is a supplement to the biography in a letter to the author by Monsieur de la Motraye. Collated complete. A biography on the life of Charles XII of Sweden. Charles was King from 1697 to 1718 belonging to the House of Palatinate-Zweibrucken. He assumed the throne at the age of fifteen and was known for being an exceptionally skilled military leader as well as being an able politician. He is credited with introducing important tax and legal reforms and was also famous for his reluctance towards peace efforts. In this biography Voltaire portrays Charles in a positive light. Voltaire was a prolific author writing more than twenty-thousand letters during his life as well as more than two-thousand books and pamphlets. Voltaire was also a significant figure in French court of the eighteenth century with his works being read by the likes of Madame de Pompadour. Bookplate to the front pastedown 'Sir Robert Laurie'. This is most likely Sir Robert Laurie 1764-1848 a Royal Navy officer who served during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. He was a noted officer being wounded in action at the Glorious First of June. Prior owner's ink inscription to the head of the title page and to the reverse of the title page. Condition: In a full calf binding. Externally generally smart with some light rubbing to the boards and spine. Minor bumping to the extremities. Bookplate to the front pastedown. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright with the odd spot. Small chip to the margin of leaf D1 not affecting text. The very occasional ink annotation to the margins.
