Arouet, Francoise-Marie ("Voltaire")
Henriade. An Epick Poem. In Ten Canto's. Translated from the French Into English Blank Verse To Which are Now Added The Argument to Each Canto and Large Notes Historical and Critical.
London: C. Davis 1732. Voltaire 1694-1778 wrote here the first recognized epic poem in French intended to imitate Virgil. This is a Very Good copy of the First Edition in English. Full leather binding; red label with gilt lettering and ruling on the spine. Clean text; 308 pages with extensive Notes beginning at page 233. Previous-owner signature on the Title Page; two other faint signatures on Page One of the text. Generally bright and unfoxed. Rubbed margins bumped and with some chipping to the leather; there is some minor loss at the top of the Title Page. The covers are rather stiff to turn. Although far from a Binding Copy Quercus is of the opinion that rebacking would be in order here to maximize enjoyment. First Edition. Full-Leather. Very Good/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Asschenberg, Hermanus, Anthony Hartsen, Jacob Lutkeman, Lucas Pater, Henri Jean Roullaud (vert); Voltaire (ps v Francois-Marie
Olimpia treurspel. Vertaald uit het Frans. Amsterdam Izaak Duim 1764.
