''Traumatisé par la dramatique affaire du chevalier François-Jean de La Barre condamné à être exécuté après avoir subi un supplice inhumain Voltaire avait à cÅ“ur de dénoncer les excès d'une institution qui rendait si mal la justice. L'hostilité de Voltaire envers le Parlement de Paris n'avait rien à voir avec les querelles contemporaines: en retraçant son histoire le philosophe entendait jeter le discrédit sur le fonctionnement de l’institution et mettre en évidence l'arbitraire et la barbarie des jugements rendus.
