Octavo. Leather boards title plates to spine. 475 pages. Beautifully marbled edges and endpapers. 0 copies of this edition held in any U.S. Libraries or institutions per OCLC Worldcat. Includes entries on "Magie" "Messes" "Martyrs" "Oracles" "Plagiat" and more. The Dictionnaire was both extremely popular and widely censored making such an early first edition as this one quite uncommon. It was a lifelong project for Voltaire and represents the culmination of his views on Christianity God morality justice and other subjects. In very good condition. Leather scuffed and and Ex-Library stamp to the title page. Mild toning to pages but otherwise clean and textblock tight. In French. <br/><br/>The Enlightenment saw the creation of a new way of structuring information in books: alphabetization. Having witnessed first-hand the popularity and many advantages of this form Voltaire set to work on his own dictionary with some modifications. Unlike the lengthy-- and thus expensive-- compendiums of his peers Voltaire's Dictionnaire would be affordable and fit in one's pocket. "Revolutionary material" Voltaire commented "must be small enough for people to carry with them." The Dictionnaire espouses tolerance freedom of the press and decries the Catholic Church's injustices. While the Dictionnaire was immensely popular and sold out many times in Voltaire's lifetime it was also censored in many countries including Switzerland Geneva and France where this copy was printed. In these countries all available editions of the book were collected and burned in the town square. Voltaire who remained an anonymous author was repeatedly asked if he minded that the Dictionnaire was being burned but he calmly replied that he had no reason to be upset. unknown books

A beautiful book in pristine condition.<br/><br/>Candide is living a sheltered life with his mentor Professor Pangloss who's mantra is "all is for the best" in the "best of all possible worlds" but as the fantastical and fast-moving plot continues Candide slowly and painfully is disillusioned as he witnesses and experiences great hardships. Voltaire concludes Candide with a practical precept "we must cultivate our garden" in lieu of the "all is for the best" in the "best of all possible worlds". Candide has enjoyed both great success and great scandal. Immediately after its secretive publication the book was widely banned to the public because it contained religious blasphemy political sedition and intellectual hostility hidden under a thin veil of naïveté. Looking at the etchings in this book might cause comment even today; they lavishly celebrate the feminine figure and are rampant with sexual innuendo. <br/><br/>This one of the 250 special edition copies bound in full morocco by Whitman Bennett N.Y. and printed on special deckle-edge Pannekoek paper. A master of letters and wit French writer Francois-Marie Arouet best known by his pen name Voltaire wrote on numerous subjects and in numerous forms often advocating for civil liberties and criticising institutions such as the Catholic Church. "Candide" remains his best known work a satire critical of the German philosopher Leibniz and his optimism.<br/><br/>This publication by the Limited Editions Club is illustrated by May Neama whose watercolours though colourful and playful illuminate the tension in the story as Candide's colourful and optimistic world is shaken and ultimately dismantled as he experiences hardships in the world.<br/><br/>___DESCRIPTION: Quarter white leather with maroon cloth boards gilt lettering and ornaments inside a white rectangle diagonally across the front and rear boards gilt lettering and ornaments on the spine frontispiece a watercolour by May Neama title page in orange and black full-page watercolours by Neama throughout some chapters with monochrome tailpieces in burgundy; monotype Deepdene Curtis white wove paper quarto size 11.5" by 7.75" pagination: i-iv v-xv xvi 1-2 3-123 124 1 colophon one of 1500 copies this number 351 signed by May Neama on the colophon. In a glassine wrapper housed in a slipcase covered in maroon cloth with cream paper spine label with burgundy lettering and ornaments.<br/><br/>___CONDITION: A fine copy; the covers clean the corners straight with no rubbing a strong square text block with solid hinges the interior is clean and bright and entirely free of prior owner markings; clea crisp as new. The announcement and Monthly Newsletter are near fine clean without wear with a few shallow creases to the bottom margin of the Newsletter and a small stray mark at the bottom of the announcement. The glassine wrapper is near fine clean with a few small chips to the corners and tail of the spine with light edge wear to the bottom edge. A pleasing set of this important French history.<br/><br/>In the Introduction Voltaire declares that his aim is greater than merely writing the life of Louis XIV: "We would endeavour to describe to posterity not the actions only of one man but the genius of the age; that age which was the most enlightened of all others." Greater than the cultures of ancient Greece and Rome and that period "which followed the taking of Constantinople by Mahomet II" the age of Louis XIV comes the closest according to Voltaire to reaching perfection. He lays out his claims in two volumes celebrating the richness of Enlightenment thought in this grandiose history. George Faulkner unknown books
