Quinta edizione clandestina la prima risale al 1764 con indicazione editoriale fittizia di Harlem in Olanda ma probabilmente stampata a Livorno. Si tratta della prima versione definitiva dell'opera con tutti i 47 paragrafi che la resero celebre. Il testo principia con un Avviso circa la traduzione francese dell'opera per merito di Andrè Morellet segue poi il famoso A chi legge in cui si traccia una breve panoramica del diritto si affrontano le prime critiche nell'attesa di nuove e più vigorose e per mezzo di segni speciali si permette di identificare le aggiunte di questa edizione. Dei Delitti e delle Pene è senza dubbio un classico del pensiero illuminista e della giurisprudenza tutta. Si pone come testo regolamentatore e come anatema contro la tortura e la pena di morte salvo in casi ritenuti eccezionali. Il libro proprio nel 1766 viene inserito nell'Indice dei Libri Proibiti su volontà del Santo Uffizio. Causa di ciò fu la distinzione che Beccaria individua tra le categorie di peccato e di reato. L'opera in ogni modo riscosse comunque immediatamente molto successo specialmente oltre confine dove le traduzioni andarono via via aumentando sia per tiratura che per lingua. -- Prima edizione clandestina del Commentario di Voltaire al celebre Dei delitti e delle pene di Cesare Beccaria. Esattamente come l'illuminista italiano Voltaire teorizza l'abolizione della tortura e la graduale estinzione della pena di morte giudicata lesiva del diritto naturale alla vita. Trascende infatti l'elemento puramente giuridico per sconfinare nei campi del diritto naturale e dell'etica superando addirittura Beccaria. Nel suo commentario inoltre introduce temi quali i rapporti con le eresie la profanazione la predicazione la stregoneria ecc. che non erano stati trattati dall'autore de Dei Delitti e delle Pene. La nostra copia fa parte della prima edizione assoluta del Commentaire edizione che crediamo essere stata distribuita in un numero molto esiguo di copie per poi essere rimpiazzata se non ritirata dalla edizione successiva dello stesso anno pubblicata in forma totalmente anonima causa attacchi inquisitoriali e corretta dal punto di vista stilistico. L'opera aggiunta come sorta di supplemento al commentario è una lettera scritta allo stesso Voltaire relativa ad un fatto di cronaca avvenuto sempre nel 1766 in cui l'estensore si scaglia nuovamente contro tortura e pena capitale. unknown

However the British Library and University of Oxford Libraries have a thirty-eight volume set also published by Crowder in the same time frame. We have thirty-six volumes in total being a consecutive run of volumes I to XXXVI. ESTC citation number T138094. A new edition. Illustrated with a frontispiece to each volume except for volumes X XI XXVII XXXIII and XXXV. Volume X illustrated with one plate. Volume XI illustrated with one plate. Volume XXVI illustrated with two folding plates one as the frontispiece. Volume XXIX illustrated with a folding map. Volume XXXIII illustrated with a folding plate. Volumes I II III published in 1778. Volumes IV V VI VII VIII IX X XI XII XIII XIV and XV published in 1779. Volumes XVI XVII XVIII XIX XX XXI XXII XXIV XXVI XXVII and XXVIII published in 1780. Volumes XXIII and XXXVI published in 1769. Volume XXV published in 1773. Volumes XXIX XXX XXXI XXXII XXXIII XXXIV and XXXV published in 1781. Volumes I-XI have a different pattern in gilt to the spine than volumes XII-XXXVI. A collection of the works of Voltaire the influential writer of the French Enlightenment. He was famous for his outspoken wit satire and for his criticism of the Roman Catholic Church. Voltaire was a prolific author writing more than twenty-thousand letters during his life as well as more than two-thousand books and pamphlets. This set contains a collection of his prose and non-fiction works. Voltaire was also a significant figure in French court of the eighteenth century with his works being read by the likes of Madame de Pompadour. Translated and annotated by T. Francklin. Francklin was an English academic and clergyman who was known for his writings for the press and stage. He also contributed to Tobias Smollett's 'Critical Review' and was the chaplain to the Royal Academy. Tobias Smollett is also noted on the title page as a contributor though it is not clear in which capacity or if he did actually do any work towards this set. Condition: In the original calf binding. EXTERNALLY. Light marks and discolouration to the boards and spines. A little bumping to the head and tail of the spines and to the extremities. Volumes III and IV have different spine labels from the rest of the set. Front board of Volume I is detached but present. Crack to the head of the front joint of Volume IV. Front hinge of Volume II is weak and may detach. Hinges of Volume III are starting but firm. Front hinges of Volumes IV XVI XXII and XXXIII are starting but firm. Front hinges of Volume XIX XXI and XXXVI are strained but remains firm. Prior owner's ink inscription to the front pastedown of Volume I. Internally firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and clean. Worming to the first few pages of Volume II. Worming to Volume XI. Overall Condition: Very Good. hardcover

It is significant because it was the first systematic study of the subject. Infused with the spirit of the Enlightenment its advocacy of crime prevention and the abolition of torture and capital punishment marked a significant advance in criminological thought which had changed little since the Middle Ages. It had a profound influence on the development of criminal law. It was especially influential among American thinkers such as Thomas Jefferson who wished to use Beccaria to reform the system of criminal law Americans inherited from England. Sloane was the son of Sir Hans Sloane 1660-1753 the important physician naturalist and collector. A biography on the life of Charles XII of Sweden. Charles was King from 1697 to 1718 belonging to the House of Palatinate-Zweibrucken. He assumed the throne at the age of fifteen and was known for being an exceptionally skilled military leader as well as being an able politician. He is credited with introducing important tax and legal reforms and was also famous for his reluctance towards peace efforts. In this biography Voltaire portrays Charles in a positive light. Voltaire was a prolific author writing more than twenty-thousand letters during his life as well as more than two-thousand books and pamphlets. Voltaire was also a significant figure in French court of the eighteenth century with his works being read by the likes of Madame de Pompadour. Bookplate to the front pastedown 'Sir Robert Laurie'. This is most likely Sir Robert Laurie 1764-1848 a Royal Navy officer who served during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. He was a noted officer being wounded in action at the Glorious First of June. Prior owner's ink inscription to the head of the title page and to the reverse of the title page. Condition: In a full calf binding. Externally generally smart with some light rubbing to the boards and spine. Minor bumping to the extremities. Bookplate to the front pastedown. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright with the odd spot. Small chip to the margin of leaf D1 not affecting text. The very occasional ink annotation to the margins. Verona: Officina Bodoni 1944. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/fine. Publisher/printer Hans Mardersteig's copy with his bookplate on the inside endpaper. One of 12 printed on Japanese Vellum and bound in full dark red morocco. Solidly fine almost as new: I could find only two pinpoint spots of rubbing on the entire book. Contents fresh and completely without foxing. Housed in the original publisher's leather-edged slipcase marbled paper boards matching the endpapers in the book with almost no wear -- fine. Printed in Centaur 16 point roman and italic designed by Bruce Rogers with chapter titles in 16 point Arrighi-Vicenza cut for Frederick Warde by George Plumet. Five raised bands Bodoni device on the top board TEG. Mardersteig later wrote :"The Voltaire was printed in the Autumn of 1944 during the most difficult period towards the end of the War.Thirty-two marines were billeted with us and a guard carrying a machine-gun continuously patrolled back and forth on the terrace in front of the big French window near the press where I stood printing my sheets. Almost every day work was interrupted by air-raid alarms and we had to rush to the deep cave hewn into the hillside behind out house.Great concentration was needed to work in such adverse conditions and see the book through to completion but finally optimism carried the day."
