‎FELIX HOLT The Radical‎

‎Edinburgh: William Blackwood 1868. 3 volumes. First edition Carter's state "A" binding Vol. III with four page "Recent Publications" ad no catalogue following as matches Sadleir's. 8vo publisher's original terra-cotta cloth decorated in blind on the covers spines ruled and lettered in gilt. Now housed in a custom slipcase. 303; 290; 283 4 ads. With all half-titles. A beautiful set the text is especially fine and fresh the cloth in especially well preserved condition with no fading and virtually no wear the hinges in Vol. III should be strengthened and refurbished. A BEAUTIFUL SET THE ORIGINAL CLOTH EXCEPTIONALLY FRESH CLEAN AND UNWORN. FELIX HOLT was one of Eliot's later novels written after she had attained great popularity and was earning a considerable income from her writing. Shortly after her death critics such as Leslie Stephen disparaged her work although interestingly enough Virginia Woolf was one of her defenders but in recent years her reputation has been upheld. F. R. Leavis in particular introduced a new understanding of and respect for her mature works. He considered her 'not as transcendentally great as Tolstoy but she is great and great in the same way'. MIDDLEMARCH is a difficult book to find especially so in such attractive condition as it came out in parts or cloth was circulated widely and does not seem to have survived in any significant quantity.
Probably the most popular of all of Eliot's novels MIDDLEMARCH has multiple plots with a large cast of characters and in addition to its distinct though interlocking narratives it pursues a number of underlying themes including the status of women the nature of marriage idealism and self-interest religion and hypocrisy political reform and education.
Industrialist and noted book collector Robert Hoe was preeminent among American producers of printing presses. ‎London: Smith Elder and Co. 1863. 3 volumes. First edition. 8vo in the original green textured cloth quite rare thus the boards paneled in blind the spines gilt lettered and decorated. Housed in a single morocco backed slipcase within individual cloth-covered chemises the morocco backed box decorated as a book with gilt tooled raised bands and gilt lettering. iv 336; iv 333 2; iv 292 pp. A copy in original cloth and state very rare as such the text uncommonly fresh with only the most minor of occasional light spotting or mellowing the cloth sturdy and dark green a little expected rubbing and very minor edge wear the gilt a bit dull a few hinges with some cosmetic separation to the endpapers the volumes still strong and tight. VERY RARE IN ORIGINAL CLOTH AND IN SUCH ORIGINAL STATE. WE KNOW OF NO OTHER ACCEPTABLE COPY CURRENTLY ON THE MARKET IN THE ORIGINAL CLOTH. A truly outstanding copy very desirable this is an exceptional survival.
Eliot's historical novel ROMOLA can be seen as a deep study of life in the city of Florence as the fictional events all take place amidst actual historical events during the Italian Renaissance and includes in its plot several notable figures from Florentine history. Literary scholars have drawn comparisons between the setting of the novel and George Eliot's contemporary Victorian England and the psychological and religious introspection seen in Eliot's other novels is also seen in Romola. With both half-titles. 8vo in handsome antique full green morocco the covers with double-ruled gilt fillet lines at the edges the spines with ornate gilt framed panels between raised bands two compartments with gilt lettering additional gilt lettering at the tail and gilt ruling at both tips gilt ruled board edges and beautifully gilt tooled turn-ins fine marbled endpapers t.e.g. 366; 381 pp. A handsome set the text quite clean and fresh and free from any spotting a light touch of normal age at the edges the fine binding in very good and attractive condition the hinges firm and fine only a trivial bit of wear and the spines mellowed to a very attractive tone of olive. FIRST EDITION GEORGE ELIOT'S Mary Anne Evans FIRST PUBLISHED FICTION AND THE FIRST WORK PUBLISHED UNDER THE GEORGE ELIOT PSEUDONYM. A collection of three short stories. Her partner G. H. Lewes in order to help her get her stories written and published arranged for John Blackwood to publish these first tentative efforts claiming them to be written by a 'friend' named George Eliot. The stories first appeared in Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine throughout 1857 and were then first published in book form as here in January of 1858.
In this complete form it was met with 'just and discerning applause' and considerable speculation as to the identity of its author. Charles Dickens wrote to the unknown author by care of William Blackwood saying "I have been so strongly affected by the two first tales in the book you have had the kindness to send me through Messrs. Blackwood that I hope you will excuse my writing to you to express my admiration of their extraordinary merit. The exquisite truth and delicacy both of the humour and the pathos of these stories I have never seen the like of; and they have impressed me in a manner that I should find it very difficult to describe to you. if I had the impertinence to try. In addressing these few words of thankfulness to the creator of the Sad Fortunes of the Rev. Amos Barton and the sad love-story of Mr. Gilfil I am I presume bound to adopt the name that it pleases that excellent writer to assume. I can suggest no better one: but I should have been strongly disposed if I had been left to my own devices to address the said writer as a woman. I have observed what seemed to me such womanly touches in those moving fictions that the assurance on the title-page is insufficient to satisfy me even now. If they originated with no woman I believe that no man ever before had the art of making himself mentally so like a woman since the world began." This makes him among the first to suggest the author may have actually been a woman. William Blackwood and Sons hardcover‎
