Stevenson Robert Louis
THE MASTER OF BALLANTRAE
1889. A Winter's Tale. London Paris New York & Melbourne: Cassell & Company 1889. 4 pp undated ads plus 16 pp ads dated July 1889. Original red cloth pictorially decorated in black. First Edition published on the day before Scribner's American edition. Stevenson freely acknowledged that his inspiration for this novel was Robert Marryat's THE PHANTOM SHIP 1839 which he had recently read. RLS began writing BALLANTRAE in Saranac Lake in 1887 but did not finish it until his first South Seas voyage in 1889. This copy has the usual proper July 1889 ads; the front free endpaper lists fourteen titles where some copies have a list of ten or twelve priority uncertain. This is a bright very good-plus copy spine slightly darkened rear endpaper cracking -- and see note regarding title page below. This is not a scarce book but it usually turns up in miserable condition; we have never seen a truly fine copy. Beinecke 487; Princeton 41A. Provenance: armorial bookplate of C.H. Waterland Mander who wrote numerous accounts about a century ago such as a 1918 History of the London Guild of Cordwainers; in the upper margin of the title page he also affixed a small version of the family arms plus his printed address.

hardcover books

The verso of this copy's front free endpaper lists only ten titles; some copies have a list of twelve or fourteen priority unknown but fewest should be best. A tough book to find in decent condition this copy is very good-plus spine a little faded and dull minor soil -- also the leaves were roughly opened in one case affecting text. Beinecke 487 cites only a copy listing 14 titles; Princeton 41A copy 1 -- mentions copies with all three lists. unknown books

THE MERRY MEN and Other Tales and Fables
1887. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons 1887. 4 pp undated ads. Original printed yellow wrappers. First American Edition of this collection of tales some of which like "Thrawn Janet" and "Markham" are along the same vein as JEKYLL AND HYDE - Stevenson called such stories his "creepers." This copy is in yellow wrappers others were bound in red cloth and offered at a higher price. This is a very good copy with minor soil wrinkling and edge-wear of the very delicate wrapper -- rather remarkable condition actually for so fragile a volume. In our experience the American edition in cloth or especially in wrappers is much scarcer than the English one even on this side of the Atlantic. Beinecke 413; Princeton 33A copy 2. unknown books

THE SUICIDE CLUB and THE RAJAH'S DIAMOND
1896. New York: George Munro's Sons n.d. March 13 1896 at the top of the front wrapper. 18 pp ads some dated June 1900. Original tan paper wrappers printed in black. First American edition to consist solely of these two groups of mysterious detective tales which had originally constituted the first volume of NEW ARABIAN NIGHTS 1882 -- in fact the running head on each page of text is that title. At that time Henry Holt published an American edition of that title including these two. It was not until 1894 that Chatto & Windus in response to the popularity of the Sherlock Holmes cases published just these two tales -- and this volume by Munro was in turn a response to that. "The Suicide Club" is actually three loosely-connected detective cases -- "Story of the Young Man with the Cream Tarts" "Story of the Physician and the Saratoga Trunk" and "The Adventure of the Hansom Cabs"; similarly "The Rajah's Diamond" follows a valuable diamond through four separate unpleasant adventures ultimately requiring the ingenuity of a detective. Despite the March 1896 date at the top of the front wrapper this copy was actually bound up a few years later as some ads are dated June 1900. This is a remarkably close-to-fine copy just a hint of wear at some corners -- of a Stevenson title that is none-too-common. Beinecke 151.

unknown books

Stevenson Robert Louis
Travels with a Donkey in the Cevennes
Boston: Roberts Brothers 1888. Hardcover. Good. 235 pp. 8vo. Publisher's pictorial blue-green cloth. Early bookplate signed by a Pearl Awalt. Newspaper clipping of an article by Van Allen Bradley laid in from 1960 discussing book values. He assesses this book at a value of $45-50 for a fine copy and then says "ask a dealer for half". This is not a fine copy and it is not a first edition but it is a reasonable copy of a scarce and fragile Stevenson book. Spine darkened head and foot of spine a bit frayed; corners bumped and edges worn.

Roberts Brothers hardcover books
