First American Edition of Stevenson's first book published five years after the London edition. Stevenson's third book TRAVELS WITH A DONKEY was published in 1879 both in London and in Boston -- making it Stevenson's first book to appear in America. This copy is bound in bright green cloth decorated with black lines and a front cover vignette in gilt. Although this is the only color referred to in both the Beinecke and the Parrish collections we have seen it also in olive-brown terra-cotta and aqua-blue presumably no priority. This is an unusually fine bright copy essentially without soil or wear at all and with the cover gilt remarkably bright. We have not had a better copy. Beinecke 14; Princeton 6B. <br/><br/> hardcover
