Review copy edition of 500 copies quarto size 114 pp. signed by Joyce Lancaster Wilson and Adrian Wilson. The Press in Tuscany Alley was one of San Francisco's small private press jewels. Adrian Wilson 1924-1988 was both a book designer and a scholar authoring "The Design of Books" which is regarded as a classic text on book design. As the New York Times stated in his obituary "Mr. Wilson designed and printed scores of books and became a mentor to younger men and women eager to learn the printer's craft. His many volumes while little-known to the general public are famous among print connoisseurs and many are collector's items." <br/><br/>When Adrian Wilson donated old proofs of "A Child's Garden of Verses" for a work not as of that date printed to the Silverado Museum devoted to the works of Robert Louis Stevenson the founder and curator urged him to publish a limited edition of the verses. A fugitive item in the bibliography of Robert Louis Stevenson a poem printed on a toy press in Davos by Lloyd Osbourne the twelve-year-old son of Fanny Stevenson. Hart suggests that it "may have been the very first thing he printed at Davos". The Beinecke copy belonged to Maggie Stevenson and is dated to 1880 on the basis of a letter from Fanny to Maggie Stevenson.<br/>Describing the fallen soldiers the poem playfully invokes a somber tone but turns its focus to the boy in its closing lines. One of the earliest publications of Robert Louis Stevenson 1850-94 who grew up in a family of lighthouse engineers. Beginning in 1867 Stevenson studied civil engineering at the University of Edinburgh and spent three summers in an apprentice ship at his father's lighthouse projects. In the spring of 1871 Stevenson presented his paper and was awarded the silver medal of the Royal Scottish Society of Arts. "The essay showed the accumulated knowledge of three obedient years" Bathurst but it marked an end to his enginnering studies. Stevenson then studied law and passed the first examination for the Scottish bar in 1872. He cared for nothing but literature and dedicated himself to his literary apprenticeship with far more zeal than he found for engineering. <br/><br/>Inscribed at the head of the title "With the author's compliments"<br/><br/>Prideaux notes "A few copies - probably not exceeding 50 - were pulled separately from the types of the Transactions with the pagination altered and a title-page added". This would have been at Stevenson's request. Preceded only by juvenilia The Pentland Rising 1866 and The Charity Bazaar 1868.
