Later pink morocco raised bands to spine ruling and title to spine in gilt concentric ruling to covers in gilt board edges gilt turn-ins gilt top edge gilt. With original spine and front cover bound in at rear. Bookplate of James Mann to front free endpaper. An insignificant dark spot to rear cover a couple of dark marks to text block. Otherwise a fine copy. First edition one of 1000 copies published. From the library of English literary journalist and author Charles Whibley whose half-brother Fred had a curious link to Stevenson. A copra trader in Tuvalu he married a local woman called Meri Matavaka. Meri's previous avaga married one had been Jack Buckland whom Stevenson acknowledges as the inspiration for Tommy Hadden in The Wrecker 1892. Buckland became friends with Stevenson and Fanny Vandegrift Stevenson in 1890 when they were co-passengers on the trading cruise of the Janet Nicoll from Sydney. In 1894 Buckland and Meri stayed with the Stevensons on Vailima in Samoa where Stevenson died later the same year. London: Longmans, Green & Co., hardcover

Bindings gilt stamp signed by MacDonald Bindery in New York. Frontispiece illustration with tissue guard in each volume. Some rubbing at spine ends with very minor chipping to heads of a few volumes; a very attractive set. Volumes 1 thru 16 of the THISTLE EDITION of the Works of Robert Louis Stevenson comprising the complete "Novels and Tales" 12 volumes and the complete "Travels and Essays" 4 volumes. These volumes contains the major prose works of Stevenson; later volumes in the series not offerred here gathered his "Letters and Miscellanies" and "Poetry and Ballads." James MacDonald 1850-1920 was born in Scotland and trained there as a bookbinder. He immigrated to the United States in 1873 and began working with William Matthews a leading American bookbinder. By 1880 he had established his own business - The Macdonald bindery which quickly gained a reputation for skilled and beautiful work. According to the Boston Evening Transcript for May 22 1912 Macdonald purchased the entire works of the famous Club Bindery from the estate of Robert Hoe. The Club Bindery had closed in 1909 and the staff had moved to Cleveland to the Rowfant Bindery. For several decades The Macdonald Bindery produced truly fine bindings for themselves and others. . Robert Louis Stevenson Autographed Signed Letter.
One page autographed signed letter from Robert Louis Stevenson to his biographer Louise Imogen Guiney. Matted and framed with a portrait of Stevenson. The letter reads "Dear Miss Guiney I have waited long upon the muse for I thought your song should be answered in kind. But I must wait no longer and the verses refuse to come. Let me then thank you in prose for your book which I have read with pleasure and for your poem which gave me genuine pride. It is a strange thing to hear one's name from across all these waters so beautifully set to song. Robert Louis Stevenson. Skerryvore Bournemouth." The recipient of the letter Louise Imogen Guiney was an Irish-American poet and a cataloger at the Boston Public Library. In 1895 she and Alice Brown published a biography of Robert Louis Stevenson. In 1885 Guiney published a book of poetry titled The White Sail and Other Poems<em> </em>which included a poem The Indian Pipes dedicated to Stevenson. A very warm letter rare and desirable. The entire piece measures 19.5 inches by 27 inches. Robert Louis Stevenson was a Scottish novelist poet essayist and travel writer. His most famous works are Treasure Island Kidnapped Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde and A Child's Garden of Verses. A literary celebrity during his lifetime Stevenson now ranks as the 26th most translated author in the world. His works have been admired by many other writers including Jorge Luis Borges Bertolt Brecht Marcel Proust Arthur Conan Doyle Henry James Ernest Hemingway Rudyard Kipling Jack London Vladimir Nabokov J. M. Barrie and G. K. Chesterton unknown
