‎DUYGU COSKUNTUNA.‎

‎Minds of passage: An interpretation of the memoirs of Young Turks, 1908-1923.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 240 p. This work represents an attempt to understand the frame of mind that the members of the Committee of Union and Progress bore through the Revolution of 1908 up to the disintegration of the Ottoman Empire. As such, it is largely based on the memoirs of Committee members and those of their contemporaries. The book's main argument is that, along with the nationalism of the era and the rise of the "individual," various related concepts such as gender and homeland were also being re-evaluated and re-valued in the minds of those who lived through this period. The book focuses on some of the ideas articulated most clearly and repeatedly in these memoirs, such as komitacilik (brigandage) and hope; as well as others that were crucial in defining an individual, such as one's occupation and their understanding of the new concept of "liberty." Noteworthy was conception and role of women in these memoirs, as it can be observed that, among other roles, women were often also seen as stand-ins for homeland. An exploration is also made of the boundaries of the "homeland," as invented (and reinvented) by the Young Turk cadres, and the emotional investment in such a notion. Lastly, the work questions the new lens of nationalism that the memoirists employed to view the communities of the empire. By using the Arabs and the Armenians within the Ottoman society as case studies, the book shows that "nationality" then was not - or at least not yet--a fixed identity, but rather a variety of contextual roles that were performed on a daily basis.".‎

‎EASTMAN, Charles A‎

‎Indian Boyhood With Illustrations by E. L. Blumenschein.‎

‎McClure, Phillips & Co, New York 1902. VIII, 289 pages, With illustrations, partially on plates. Red, illustrated original cloth binding. (A littles used. Good copy). 21x15 cm‎

‎* First edition. Illustrated after drawings and paintings of Native American themes by Taos artist Blumenschein. ----- Charles Alexander Eastman (* 1858; ? 1939 ? ? Ohíye S?a (Quelle Wikipedia)‎

‎New English Paperback. Color and b/w ills. 670 p. In English and Turkish. The anatomy of a tradition: 150 years of Robert College.= Bir gelenegin anatomisi: Robert Kolej'in 150 yili. [Exhibition catalogue]. A very heavy volume. Istanbul Research Institute in collaboration with Robert College presented the exhibition The Anatomy of a Tradition: 150 Years of Robert College 1863 - 2013 at the Istanbul Research Institute on the occasion of 150th anniversary of Robert College, one of the long-established and meritocratic educational institutions of Istanbul. Robert College was founded in Istanbul in 1863 by Cyrus Hamlin and Christopher R. Robert, two men who believed in the universal value of education. It was the first American school to be established in the Ottoman lands, and outside the USA. Surviving revolutions, wars, earthquakes, fires, and epidemics, the College never closed down a single day throughout its 150-year history. Robert College has educated seven prime ministers (four of them Bulgarian), countless statesmen, writers, artists, musicians, actors, athletes, businessmen, engineers, doctors, lawyers, and educators. It has been the standard against which other schools measure themselves, even when Robert College itself had the challenge of living up to its own standards, due to lack of funding, inadequate buildings etc. from time to time throughout its history. Curated by Cem Akas, the exhibition shed light on the 150 years of the College, as well as the educational, cultural, social and intellectual life in Istanbul through selected photographs and objects from Robert College Archives, Columbia University Rare Book & Manuscript Library and private collections.‎

‎Industrial archaeology by the Golden Horn.‎

‎Fine Fine English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (30 x 24 cm). In English. 254 p., color ills. Industrial archaeology by the Golden Horn. Just as it is privilege to be the General Manager of such an eclectic and wonderful museum, so it has been a privilege to work with so many distinguished contributors, colleagues and consultants in the making of this book. Conceived during our tenth year anniversary festivities, this work is a celebration not only of the richness of the Rahmi M. Koç Museum and its collections, but also of the beauty of industrial heritage, the scientific achievements of mankind, and the genius loci of Istanbul and the Golder Horn. In devising the format of this volume, we were determined to do more than a conventional pictorial catalogue of the most important objects in our collections: we wanted also to celebrate their beauty and craftsmanship; to add atmosphere and depth by including contenporary documents and illustrations; and to provide periodic food for thought in the form of essays from eminent contributors.‎

The torch of the Empire: Ignatius Mouradgea d'Ohsson and the tableau general of the Ottoman Empire in the eighteenth century.= Imparatorlugun mesalesi: XVIII. yüzyilda Osmanli Imparatorlugu'nun genel görünümü ve Ignatius Mouradgea d'Ohsson. Articles by Carter Vaughn Findley, Günsel Renda, Philip Mansel, Veniamin Ciobanu, Kemal Beydilli, Abdeljelil Temimi, Rachida Tlili Sellaouti, Folke Ludwigs Sture Theolin. The Torch of the Ottoman Empire presents the life and work of a truly remarkable person, Ignatius Mouradgea d'Ohsson, and through him, the Ottoman Empire of the late eighteenth century. In revolutionary Paris d'Ohsson published in 1789 what is maybe the best description of the social history of the Ottoman Empire, Tableau General de I'Empire Othoman. D'Ohsson's book was extravagantly illustrated with the help of the best artists in Constantinople working for Abdulhamid I and Selim III. The most renowned artists of pre-revolutionary France then executed the gravures in Paris. Some motifs, reproduced also in this present book, still remain quite unique. Through these engravings, an intimate reality is revealed to us, bringing us very close to a universe long since vanished. A very heavy volume. The Torch of the Empire presents the life and work of a truly remarkable person, Ignatius Mouradgea d'Ohsson, and through him, the Ottoman Empire of the late eighteenth century. Ignatius Mouradgea d'Ohsson was a dragoman, an interpreter, at the Swedish Legation in Constantinople from around 1760. Although d'Ohsson was a Sultan's subject of French-Armenian origin, Sweden's King Gustav III made him a Swedish nobleman and trusted him to be his ambassador to the Sublime Porte. Mouradgea d'Ohsson thus performed an extraordinary journey, not only through the social classes of Ottoman society, but between civilizations. With outstanding scholars this book escorts us on a journey through the centuries to meet d'Ohsson and share his perspective on the Ottoman Empire and on European diplomacy of his time.‎

‎Gallipoli: History, memory and national imagination.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. [xiv], 201 p., ills. "Gallipoli: History, Memory and National Imagination is a collection of papers presented by outstanding scholars at two international symposiums held at the Australian National University in 2008 and 2009. Both symposiums attracted quite a number of scholars in the audience who came from universities across Australia. Both symposiums were unique and the papers presented demonstrated that there is still more has to be written on various other aspects of the campaign. The Second International Symposium also received recognition form media. This book is unique in that it differs from what has been published until now in a number of ways.".‎
