The anatomy of a tradition: 150 years of Robert College.= Bir gelenegin anatomisi: Robert Kolej'in 150 yili. [Exhibition catalogue].
New English Paperback. Color and b/w ills. 670 p. In English and Turkish. The anatomy of a tradition: 150 years of Robert College.= Bir gelenegin anatomisi: Robert Kolej'in 150 yili. [Exhibition catalogue]. A very heavy volume. Istanbul Research Institute in collaboration with Robert College presented the exhibition The Anatomy of a Tradition: 150 Years of Robert College 1863 - 2013 at the Istanbul Research Institute on the occasion of 150th anniversary of Robert College, one of the long-established and meritocratic educational institutions of Istanbul. Robert College was founded in Istanbul in 1863 by Cyrus Hamlin and Christopher R. Robert, two men who believed in the universal value of education. It was the first American school to be established in the Ottoman lands, and outside the USA. Surviving revolutions, wars, earthquakes, fires, and epidemics, the College never closed down a single day throughout its 150-year history. Robert College has educated seven prime ministers (four of them Bulgarian), countless statesmen, writers, artists, musicians, actors, athletes, businessmen, engineers, doctors, lawyers, and educators. It has been the standard against which other schools measure themselves, even when Robert College itself had the challenge of living up to its own standards, due to lack of funding, inadequate buildings etc. from time to time throughout its history. Curated by Cem Akas, the exhibition shed light on the 150 years of the College, as well as the educational, cultural, social and intellectual life in Istanbul through selected photographs and objects from Robert College Archives, Columbia University Rare Book & Manuscript Library and private collections.

Just as it is privilege to be the General Manager of such an eclectic and wonderful museum, so it has been a privilege to work with so many distinguished contributors, colleagues and consultants in the making of this book. Conceived during our tenth year anniversary festivities, this work is a celebration not only of the richness of the Rahmi M. Koç Museum and its collections, but also of the beauty of industrial heritage, the scientific achievements of mankind, and the genius loci of Istanbul and the Golder Horn. In devising the format of this volume, we were determined to do more than a conventional pictorial catalogue of the most important objects in our collections: we wanted also to celebrate their beauty and craftsmanship; to add atmosphere and depth by including contenporary documents and illustrations; and to provide periodic food for thought in the form of essays from eminent contributors.

The torch of the Empire: Ignatius Mouradgea d'Ohsson and the tableau general of the Ottoman Empire in the eighteenth century.= Imparatorlugun mesalesi: XVIII. yüzyilda Osmanli Imparatorlugu'nun genel görünümü ve Ignatius Mouradgea d'Ohsson. Articles by Carter Vaughn Findley, Günsel Renda, Philip Mansel, Veniamin Ciobanu, Kemal Beydilli, Abdeljelil Temimi, Rachida Tlili Sellaouti, Folke Ludwigs Sture Theolin. The Torch of the Ottoman Empire presents the life and work of a truly remarkable person, Ignatius Mouradgea d'Ohsson, and through him, the Ottoman Empire of the late eighteenth century. In revolutionary Paris d'Ohsson published in 1789 what is maybe the best description of the social history of the Ottoman Empire, Tableau General de I'Empire Othoman. D'Ohsson's book was extravagantly illustrated with the help of the best artists in Constantinople working for Abdulhamid I and Selim III. The most renowned artists of pre-revolutionary France then executed the gravures in Paris. Some motifs, reproduced also in this present book, still remain quite unique. Through these engravings, an intimate reality is revealed to us, bringing us very close to a universe long since vanished. A very heavy volume. The Torch of the Empire presents the life and work of a truly remarkable person, Ignatius Mouradgea d'Ohsson, and through him, the Ottoman Empire of the late eighteenth century. Ignatius Mouradgea d'Ohsson was a dragoman, an interpreter, at the Swedish Legation in Constantinople from around 1760. Although d'Ohsson was a Sultan's subject of French-Armenian origin, Sweden's King Gustav III made him a Swedish nobleman and trusted him to be his ambassador to the Sublime Porte. Mouradgea d'Ohsson thus performed an extraordinary journey, not only through the social classes of Ottoman society, but between civilizations. With outstanding scholars this book escorts us on a journey through the centuries to meet d'Ohsson and share his perspective on the Ottoman Empire and on European diplomacy of his time.

Contact des langues II: Les mots voyageurs et l'Orient.
New English Paperback. Pbo. Roy. 8vo. (23 x 16 cm). In French.

New Turkish Paperback. Pbo. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In Turkish. 460 p., ills. Byzantion'dan Constantinopolis'e Istanbul kusatmalari. Istanbul Research Institute presents a collection of papers in its new book. Although it does not discuss each siege that the city has encountered throughout its history of nearly two millennia, Byzantion'dan Constantinopolis'e Istanbul Kusatmalari presents a full view -panopticon- of the ones that sources bring to the forefront. It is a collection of works selected from current literature that takes into consideration the diversity of ancient sources, epigraphical documents, and numismatic finds which have gained more prominence in Ancient and Medieval studies. The book contains research essays written in Turkish and English which not only focus on the forces that have besieged Istanbul (ever since its foundation, the city has been sieged first by its closest neighbors, the Thracians, and later the Hellenes, the Macedonians, Hellenistic kingdoms, the Romans, the Avars, the Sassanids, the Arabs, the Bulgars, the Rus, the Crusaders, and the Ottomans), but also draw attention to political rivalries, sieges triggered by conflicts that resulted in civil wars, and the capital's defense elements.

The lure of the East: British orientalist painting.= Dogu'nun cazibesi: Britanya oryantalist resmi. [Exhibition catalogue].
New English Paperback. 4to. (28 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 360 p., color ills. The lure of the East: British orientalist painting.= Dogu'nun cazibesi: Britanya oryantalist resmi. [Exhibition catalogue]. This exhibition focused on the paintings made by British artists of the 'Orient', primarily during the nineteenth century. In this context the term 'Orient', to Western Europeans, meant those parts of the eastern Mediterranean world which could be accessed relatively easily such as Egypt, Palestine and Turkey, particularly after the development of steamboat and rail travel in the 1830s. In these places, predominantly Muslim and at least nominally under the control of the Ottoman Empire, British artists, such as David Roberts, David Wilkie, William Holman Hunt, John Frederick Lewis and Frederic Leighton, sought to develop imagery which captured what they believed to be characteristic of the people, cities and landscapes of the region. In the 1970s the Palestinian-American academic Edward Said published his treatise on Orientalism, initiating a global debate over Western representations of the Middle East. For many, such representations now appeared to be a sequence of fictions, serving the West's desire for superiority and control over the East. The argument for and against Said's Orientalism has continued for thirty years. Its resonance for an exhibition such as this one, however, is as strong as ever given that, by the 1920s (the end of the period covered by this exhibition), Britain was in direct control of much of the newly abolished Ottoman Empire, including Egypt, Palestine and Iraq. As Said argued, these images cannot be viewed in isolation from their wider political and cultural context. Keeping the debates around Orientalism in mind, "The Lure of the East" focuses on the range of pictorial options open to British artists, within five major themes: portraits, genre, religious and domestic subjects and landscape. British painters came to the Middle East from a culture steeped in technical and compositional artistic traditions. Such traditions were not easily unlearned, despite the apparent difference of the people and places the artists encountered on their travels. Given this, British Orientalist painters found many challenges in attempting to represent the Middle East, but they also found inspiration and, more importantly, the freedom to rework, reinvent and even discard those conventions that defined picture-making in Britain.

The Crescent and the Sun. Three Japanese in Istanbul: Yamada Torajiro, Ito Chuta, Otani Kozui.= Hilâl ve Günes. Istanbul'da üç Japon: Yamada Torajiro, Ito Chuta, Otani Kozui. [Exhibition catalogue].
New English Paperback. 4to. (32 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 398 p., color ills. The Crescent and the Sun. Three Japanese in Istanbul: Yamada Torajiro, Ito Chuta, Otani Kozui.= Hilâl ve Günes. Istanbul'da üç Japon: Yamada Torajiro, Ito Chuta, Otani Kozui. [Exhibition catalogue]. a most interesting exhibition about three Japanese men: Yamada Torajiro (1866-1957), Ito Chuta (1867-1954), and Otani Kozui (1876-1948), these threemen visited Istanbul during the early stages of Turkish-Japanese relations. The endeavors and experiences of these three Japanese men in the Ottoman Empire and the Turkish Republic inspired this exhibition. Businessman and tea master Yamada, architect, professor, and the first Japanese architectural historian Itô, and Buddhist abbot and researcher Ôtani were three outstanding men who left their mark in Japan through their respective fields. Coincidentally enough, the three Japanese grew interested in the Ottoman Empire/Turkish Republic roughly around the same period, in late 19th to early 20th centuries, and left behind works that related their experiences in Turkey. The exhibition is based on the views and experiences of these three Japanese men; through new finds, historic works, and documents, including objects from Japanese and Istanbul museums that are displayed for the first time, it conveys the Ottoman Empire and Turkey impressions of Japanese from the Meiji period. Through the adventures of these three Japanese men, the exhibition explores a multi-layered window of history that opens from Istanbul to the world.
