The Crescent and the Sun. Three Japanese in Istanbul: Yamada Torajiro, Ito Chuta, Otani Kozui.= Hilâl ve Günes. Istanbul'da üç Japon: Yamada Torajiro, Ito Chuta, Otani Kozui. [Exhibition catalogue].
New English Paperback. 4to. (32 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 398 p., color ills. The Crescent and the Sun. Three Japanese in Istanbul: Yamada Torajiro, Ito Chuta, Otani Kozui.= Hilâl ve Günes. Istanbul'da üç Japon: Yamada Torajiro, Ito Chuta, Otani Kozui. [Exhibition catalogue]. a most interesting exhibition about three Japanese men: Yamada Torajiro (1866-1957), Ito Chuta (1867-1954), and Otani Kozui (1876-1948), these threemen visited Istanbul during the early stages of Turkish-Japanese relations. The endeavors and experiences of these three Japanese men in the Ottoman Empire and the Turkish Republic inspired this exhibition. Businessman and tea master Yamada, architect, professor, and the first Japanese architectural historian Itô, and Buddhist abbot and researcher Ôtani were three outstanding men who left their mark in Japan through their respective fields. Coincidentally enough, the three Japanese grew interested in the Ottoman Empire/Turkish Republic roughly around the same period, in late 19th to early 20th centuries, and left behind works that related their experiences in Turkey. The exhibition is based on the views and experiences of these three Japanese men; through new finds, historic works, and documents, including objects from Japanese and Istanbul museums that are displayed for the first time, it conveys the Ottoman Empire and Turkey impressions of Japanese from the Meiji period. Through the adventures of these three Japanese men, the exhibition explores a multi-layered window of history that opens from Istanbul to the world. The poetics and politics of place: Ottoman Istanbul and British orientalism.
New English Paperback. 4to. (30 x 24 cm). In English. 285 p. Color and b/w ills. "This unique collection takes a fresh look at Orientalism by shifting its center from Europe to Ottoman Istanbul and thinking about art in terms of exchange, reciprocity, and comparative imperialisms. This new lens reveals the essential role of the Ottoman city and its patrons and artists in the dialogues that facilitated production, circulation, and consumption of British Orientalist cultures. In this volume, art works are conceptualized as traveling artifacts produced through localized interactions. World renowned scholars and curators analyze the diverse audiences for such art works and the range of differing contexts for their reception both in the 19th century and more recently. In this way, British art is put into a dynamic relationship with an historicized understanding of cultures of collecting and display during the formation of comparative modernities and also with the contemporary postcolonial creation of new national models of exhibition and education. Featuring stunning visuals, this book puts art history in the context of cultural, visual, and literary studies, challenging the orthodoxies of postcolonial theory with the materiality of multiple imperialisms and modernities to offer a new take on the collection, display, and consumption of Orientalist cultures.".

EDWIN A. GROSVENOR.
Constantinople.
New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English. 608 p. The book is organized chronologically, by political history, and then by theme; a great deal of space is devoted to archaeological history, art history, and architecture. Also discusses the physical nature of the city: how the art, the growth of the streets, and the politics all affected the city's appearance today. The history, mythology, art, and décor of significant mosques in the city are included. Contains about 600 pages of analysis, with a great number of photographs and illustrations. Constantinople was "the most important treatise . . . that has yet appeared in English," wrote a reviewer in the Springfield Republican. "One of the books of the year." The New York Times said that Grosvenor was "uniquely suited to the task." This special edition of the book comprises two volumes, separately published in 1900 and 1895.

ELI SHAUL SHAUL.
From Balat to Bat Yam: Memoirs of a Turkish Jew.
New English Paperback. Pbo. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In English. 243 p. " Eli Shaul (1916-2004) was a Turkish Jew. After spending his childhood in the colorful Balat neighborhood, he received a superb education at the prestigious Istanbul Erkek Lisesi (Istanbul Men's High School), the University of Istanbul, and the Reserve Officers Training School in Ankara. While still in high school, he began keeping a diary, which he continued during his college years and the time he spent serving as an army dentist in eastern Turkey. Those diaries, contained in this book, provide rare insights into what life was like for minorities - and particularly for Jews - in Turkey during the nineteen thirties and forties. Atatürk's Republic, which most of them ardently supported, had raised their hopes of at last being accepted as fully equal Turkish citizens in every way, but those hopes were cruelly dashed when discrimination and anti-Semitism continued, and even worsened, especially after Atatürk's death in 1938. Not surprisingly, most of Turkey's Jews immigrated to Israel after it won its independence in 1948. That exodus provoked harsh criticism of the Jews in the Turkish press, and the Turkish Jews founded their own newspapers and magazines to respond to those attacks. Shaul was one of the first contributors to Turkey's fledgling Jewish press, and some of his most important articles are included in this volume. He himself moved to Israel in 1950 but continued to write articles for Turkish Jewish publications throughout his life and also authored a book on the folklore of the Turkish Jews. From Balat to Bat Yam is a testament to Eli Shaul's deeply felt patriotism, which consisted not only of love for his native Turkey but insistence that she treat all her citizens as equals".

ELISEE TRIVIER, (French explorer), (1842-1912).
[FROM MARSEILLES TO CONGO, MOZAMBIQUE AND THE CENTRAL AFRICA] Triviye'nin Afrika seyâhatnâmesi (Asir Kitabhânesi Külliyâti). [= Mon voyage au Continent Noir; la "Gironde" en Afrique]. Translated into Ottoman Turkish by Mehmed Ekrem.
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original wrappers. 16mo. (14,5 x 10,5 cm). In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic letters). 20 p. First and only edition of this extremely rare pamphlet includes the chapters of 'From Marseilles to Gabon' and 'From Libreville to Banguela' of Trivier's expeditions in Africa. First chapter includes Trivier's Mozambique travel by ship over the Strait of Gibraltar. In this chapter, Trivier described the purpose of his voyage as "After returning to France from my last trip in January 1890, I declared that many more places should be seen. I have written many articles about the necessity of looking for new ways to eliminate the fears and worries caused by McKinley tariffs that are harmed everywhere. As a nice result of this, the Paris City Council and the Bordeaux Chamber of Commerce decided not to be dispatched to the hometown of Africans with an amount of money close to 11,000 francs.". In the second chapter, he describes Congo and other parts of Central Africa. French explorer Elisee Trivier followed in the footsteps of Scottish missionary David Livingstone in his attempt to explore the interior of Africa. Trivier's expedition traveled in 1889 up the Congo and across Africa to the island of Zanzibar on the eastern coast. Trivier is considered the first French explorer to have crossed Africa. New English Paperback. Pbo. Oblong 12mo. (11 x 12 cm). In English. 60 p., color and b/w ills. Yusuf Agâh Efendi: The first Turkish ambassador in 18th century London. Among the "memorable events during the year 1793", in between references to the turbulent incidents in post-revolutionary Republican France, including the execution of King Louis XVI, The Times newspaper listed, as the last article, the arrival of the Turkish Ambassador at Dover in December. It was indeed a memorable event, since Yusuf Agâh Efendi (1744-1824) was the first resident Ottoman envoy to be sent to the court of St James's by the Sublime Porte and his arrival in Britain was highly anticipated. On the 220th anniversary year of this historic event the Turkish music historian Dr Emre Araci traces the steps of the Ottoman ambassador in 18th century London through a kaleidoscope of concerts, dinners, processions, firework displays and balls from Theatre Royal, Covent Garden to the celebrated Ranelagh and Vauxhall Gardens.
