On the 220th anniversary year of this historic event the Turkish music historian Dr Emre Araci traces the steps of the Ottoman ambassador in 18th century London through a kaleidoscope of concerts, dinners, processions, firework displays and balls from Theatre Royal, Covent Garden to the celebrated Ranelagh and Vauxhall Gardens.

"Ali Sami (Aközer) is born in Rusçuk in 1866, and moves to Istanbul. Because his family is registered in the Beylerbeyi quarter of Üsküdar, Ali Sami is also called Üsküdarli Ali Sami. He graduates from the Mühendishane-i Berri-i Hümayun in 1866 and becomes a teacher of painting and photography at the school. He is employed in the Ottoman army, and he is also a teacher of phography at the palace and for many years gives lessons to Prince Burhaneddin Efendi. In 1889 he becomes an aide to Abdülhamid II. As a military photographer, he is assigned by Abdülhamid II to accompany German Emperor Wilhelm II during his visit to the Ottoman Empire when he travels from Istanbul to Jerusalem in 1898, and presents an album of this journey to the sultan. After the constitutional monarchy is proclaimed, he becomes a painting teacher at Trabzon High School, and passes away in 1936 in Istanbul". This is one the serie of the Bonn projection maps which are the first map series in modern techniques in Turkey and the Ottoman Empire. In order to produce these maps covering Turkish territory, Reconnaissance Branch was incorporated into The Mapping Commission. The maps were produced in the datum based on the latitude and longitude of Ayasofya Mosque in equal area Bonn Projection. The field works for the 123 sheets covering the country were conducted by 76 staff. The production was completed in 18 years starting from east west. Field works continued without stopping except in years 1914 and 1920. This map series called also reconnaissance maps contributed a lot to producing 1:25.000 scale maps.

Krickl made important contributions to this stage of Lycian research, drawing sketches of the monuments they encountered and plans of the ancient sites they visited, and taking photographs. 1892 Lycian Journal is Ernst Krickl's personal account of the expedition, illustrated with photographs. These three albums are here published in facsimile and English translation together with contemporary commentary on the expedition as described by Krickl. Reading Krickl's journal we accompany this young military engineer on a journey with some of the most eminent scholars of his time through a world that was completely strange to him and in many respects is strange to us in Turkey today, due to the radical changes that have taken place over the intervening century.

Once upon a time Jews lived in Kirklareli: The story of the Adato Family, 1800-1934.

Today, due to emigration, only a few individuals remain. Erol Haker, whose parents were originally from Kirklareli, tells the story of three generations of the Adoto family, which has resided in Kirklareli since its expulsion from Spain at the end of the fifteenth century. Using the archives of the Alliance school in Kirklaerli as well as interviews with surviving natives of the town, Haker describes the Jewish lives in the nineteenth century and then their experience of traumatic events from the Balkan and First World Wars and the arrival of Bulgarian and Greek armies until the anti-Jewish riots of the 1930s. Haker's work serves to reminds us of the fact that the Thracian Jewish community was one of the Ottoman Empire's most vibrant and that Kirklareli was, until the early years of the Turkish Republic, still home to an important part of Turkey's Jewish population.
