Diary Beatrice E. Smither
One year in the life of a young woman educated socially active and employed in the years following suffrage
Richmond VA 1925. One year diary bound by Fidelity and Deposit Company of Richmond. Comprised of 271 pages handwritten by Beatrice E. Smither a young woman working in a law firm five years after the 19th Amendment's passage. The majority of passages are written in longhand with scattered shorthand throughout. Beatrice's daily diary reveals an incredibly active life and gives a strong sense of the kind of independence that women of her generation were experiencing. Employed in Richmond Virginia at the law firm of Williams and Mullen founded 1909 and still operating Beatrice Smithers is the embodiment of a flapper. Throughout the year of 1925 she reports daily on her work at the law firm where she frequently stays til 6:00 or later on meetings of her multiple church and civic clubs and on her romances with two men Cy and George who rival for her affection. She even reports on political events such as board local and presidential elections in which she participates. The diary is clearly a safe space for her where she can sort out ideas and emotions. "Quite busy at work today" she reports on January 5 "Lunch at noon with Mae Burton - at night trying to work up some plan for Junior Council Meeting - Cy talks to me early - does not bring me home from work - John D. calls me up and wants me to attend a meeting of the Sunday Night Club." In entries like these we get a sense of the busy rhythm of Beatrice's days. In others we get a sense of her ability to manage and lead groups and how seriously she takes community engagement. "Leave office at 5:25 to ride up.to Public Library & look over same & I take out our membership card to get a book for my Sunday leading exercise -- Mae brings me home & I work for awhile on preparing to lead Sunday morning exercises" she reports on January 22. We also get regular glimpses into Beatrice's private life and her family. "Dear Diary" she writes on February 18 "As if we are not all worried enough to kill us with father's craziness drunk nearly all the day since he got back from Westbrook I had to turn my ankle while walking." The next day "Father home - who is again as usual drunk with liquor and not himself." The addiction issues in her family drive Beatrice to pursue financial independence -- and to think seriously about her choice of a mate as she debates between Cy "so dear and devilish" and George "so sweet and faithful"; she even despairs "I wonder if I am a traitor to my own self loving two men at the same time" and "I wish I could die!.Everything is a mess." There are even entries that cryptically suggest she had a pregnancy scare or was using the rhythm method to avoid it: "Menstruation begins" October 8 and "Menstruation ends" Oct 14 the only two such in the whole book. In the course of the year she ultimately breaks with Cy gets engaged to stable and supportive George and decides to continue working. A densely packed manuscript with research potential including but not limited to women's employment history gender studies post-suffrage literature the history of reading the history of social and civic clubs in America the history of tourism paleography family addiction and mental illness and sexuality. unknown

Diary Gladys M. Barber
1908 Travel Diary of an American woman college graduate documenting her trans-continental experiences of art music and contemporary politics
Germany 1908. Black sheep over stitched card with some rubbing to the spine and edges. Text block reinforced internally with paper tape. Measures 3 x 5 inches. Comprised of 72 densely handwritten pages documenting the European travel experiences of Gladys M. Barber who earned her A.B. from Boston University in 1905 and would return soon after as a Master's Candidate. Gladys' narrative style reveals her to be an insightful cultural observer who uses her education to explore the world around her. Traversing the Atlantic landing in Dover and making the passage across the Channel into the Continent Gladys regularly notes social differences between Americans and Germans. "It did seem very strange for businessmen to be leisurely occupying themselves with coffee and cigars in almost mid-afternoon.Amusing things to me were the keeping on the gentleman's right regardless of whether I was on the outside of the sidewalk; talking across an immovable woman in the electric or getting out of the bus first." Learning to navigate the different mores Gladys notes that "it makes a girl feel very independent and grown up." In addition to her immersion into the daily activities of people in Berlin Potsdam and Dresden Gladys consistently visits museums and galleries and she attends concerts and operas. She attends a performance of Mendelssohn's Midsummer Night's Dream a performance of Wilhelm Tell and a Wagner opera conducted by Rudolf Krasselt. She hears a piano performance by Martha Siebold who would later be called "one of the most gifted and proficient pianists of the day" Musical Courier 1916 and who Gladys described as a player "with great control ability and good interpretation." As she examines the nude masterpieces of Rubens at the National Gallery she comments with amusement that "upon noticing that we were only females in the room we laughingly whispered 'Do you think this is a proper place for us'" She also reveals her knowledge of contemporary Continental art when she compares the landscape of the countryside to "the famous paintings by the Dutch painter" Einar Wegener Lili Elbe. These experiences lead Gladys to think about the larger world and its politics. She considers how artifacts reached some of the German museums following the Boxer Rebellion and Schliemann's problematic excavation of Troy. She reports in rich detail about the spectacle of the marriage parade for Kaiser Wilhelm's son and she documents being present at the Kaiser's departure "from his palace in his auto to go for a trip in Count Zeppelin's air ship" -- sights that she positions as historically important. She even notes in one entry "Wm. H. Taft elected Pres. of the U.S. It will seem very strange to go back home under another president." For an educated woman without the right to vote the transition strikes her as significant. According to Boston University records Gladys M. Barber earned her A.B. in 1905; and by 1911 she was listed among Master's Candidates at the same school. Her European travel as recorded in this diary falls squarely between her two degrees suggesting that first-hand experience of the world was a supplement to higher education rather than a break from it. An exceptionally rich resource with research possibilities including but not limited to women's education contemporary approaches to modern art global politics leading up to WWI travel and tourism history German art and architecture the history of fashion and the history of music. unknown

Diary Katharine Shepard
A nurse and women's club leader keeps a diary in the year American women gained suffrage
Newberryport MA 1920. Standard Daily Journal in original blue cloth binding with title to front board. Containing 365 pages of daily entries plus 56 additional pages of notes largely monthly expense accounts and recipes to be made. Documenting the life of Massachusetts nurse and women's club leader Katharine Shepard this densely packed diary gives insight into the activities ideas and feelings of an active woman who along with the female population of the U.S. had just obtained the right to vote. Everything about the present diary shows that Katharine was an active intelligent ambitious and civically engaged individual. 45 years old at the time of this journal she suffers no fools at work or in her clubs; and she values the balance she has accomplished between her intense work and activist commitments and self-care. Both front and rear pastedowns handle the overload of her notes on accounts contacts and recipes. Internally she diligently documents all 365 days of her year. She discusses the nursing lesson plans classes students and lectures she gives; she records and reflects on speaking appointments at the Roxbury Women's Club Amherst College Girls' City Club and the Cambridge Women's Club; she keeps track of various bills and legislation she is in support of or wants to assist in banning in her state. As the presidential election nears as expected she has educated herself chosen a side and thrown her weight behind her candidate attending a Republican rally in October and noting on November 2 that she has voted for the first time. In the midst of all this Katharine never lets us forget that she is very human. She gets tired and temperamental describing a disagreeable committee member as "looking like a potato" she pores over the cost and effort of shopping for nursing uniforms and she revels in opportunities for personal care such as getting her hair and nails done on days off. She is a real modern woman -- employed self-supporting and responsible with her finances determined to be a good worker citizen and friend invested in caring for herself. A rich document with research possibilities including but not limited to the history of nursing and nursing education the history of women's clubs leading into suffrage cookery and food supply chain the finances of working women the work-life balance of women women's early approaches to national voting speeches and civic engagement and the role of women's groups in single women's lives. unknown

The entries are dated January 1st through December 31st 1865. Accompanied by mid-twentieth century typescript transcription compiled by a Michener family descendant. The entries record the daily activities of Michener the work he was engaged in news of the Civil War the death of Abraham Lincoln and his experiences on a trip west across Iowa to Sioux City Iowa and into Nebraska Territory looking at various properties with a view to purchasing a homestead in that Territory. Michener was a correspondent of Rev. Samuel Aughey 1832-1912 a Lutheran minister and natural scientist and former Pennsylvanian and who had been in Nebraska since 1864 who acting in the role of promoter and booster seems to have induced a number of residents of Duncannon to Dakota Nebraska Territory to seek homesteads. Aughey was appointed in 1871 by the regents of the University of Nebraska to a chair of natural history at the new university. The only scientist on a faculty of five Aughey acquired the title of “Honorary State Geologist.” He was possibly the best known member of the university faculty during the 1870’s Aughey became a well-known Nebraska booster. He promoted the richness of the state’s soils the idea of increasing precipitation by cultivating more acres and the prospects for coal fuel in that state with few trees. Sample Quotations: Sunday January 1 1865. “Sunday the weather fine and clear at Sunday School at 1 o’clock. School opened by P. F. Michener Sup’t and closed by Father Sylvanus Green with a few appropriate remarks we did get the news of the death of M. B. P. Stewart who was seriously wounded and died from the effects on the 27th of November 1864.” Monday January 2 1865. “… received from A. G. White twelve dollars for making sleigh and one dollar & half from A. Miller for repairing sausage cutter John McLain is very sick and he is at John Jones no person is allowed to go into see him save the family …” Monday January 9 1865. “This morning the coldest this winter. This evening somewhat warmer… Received a letter from Rev. Samuel Aughey from Dakota Nebraska Territory he gives much information about the country…” Wednesday January 25 1865. “This morning clear and very cold and has been all day and this is going to be a very cold night. The boys have a fine time sliding down the hills on their sleds. I was told today that the Smithsonian Institute at Washington has been partly destroyed by fire very lately which did contain many things that can never be replaced Such as paintings and so forth which is a great loss to the country.” Wednesday February 1 1865. “This morning cloudy and not so cold as it has been the sleighing is first rate yet. 18 years today since I did commence business. Chickens are crowing and it is but 9 o’clock. This evening is cloudy. I did today send my application with some certificates and a partition to Provost Marshall General for to try and get back my commutation and also a letter to the Hon. Jas. Bailey member of congress. Slavery is forever done with in the United States.” Wednesday February 22 1865. “This morning clear and pretty cold about 9 o’clock … There is a ball up at Bloomfield. I think it would be better for them here and hereafter if they would turn it into a prayer meeting and ask God to have mercy on their souls. Received the Governor’s message from Nebraska Territory I suppose sent by Bro. Aughey. Some very good things in it.”write for fuller description unknown

Diary Snyder Isaac Newton
Diary of Isaac Newton Snyder of Brownsville Township Union County Indiana kept while a student at Miami University Ohio dated 1869
12mo 276 pages written in ink in a legible hand diary binding worn tear along hinge of rear spine tips of spine chipped worn through at corners of boards. One page is torn out of the diary and not accounted for containing the entries for January 3rd & 4th. The pages for January 7th through January 10th have bottom of page clipped with loss of last 4 lines of each page otherwise good. Page total includes 14 pages of memorandum notes cash accounts etc. at rear. Isaac Newton Snyder was born on April 7 1856. He was the youngest of the seven children of Simon Ely Snyder 1804-1890 of Lee County Virginia and his wife Sarah Witt 1808-1879. Isaac married Maria Antoinette Martin 1854-1902 in 1884. Together Isaac and his wife had at least eight children four of whom were still living in 1900: John G. Isaac N. Jr. Simon E. and Ross E. The Census record Isaac's occupation as a farmer living at Brownsville Union County Indiana. Isaac died on September 19th 1920 and was buried at the West Point Cemetery at Liberty Union County Indiana. His wife Marie predeceased him on 10 June 1902. While the census records record Isaac as a farmer he studied at Miami University Ohio graduating with a B.S. in 1871 and an A.M. in 1886. Isaac had an interest in astronomy and wrote a popular science book called Looking Skyward and the Earth published in 1911. The diary plan is one day per page. Isaac kept this diary when he was attending Miami University in 1869. There are 262 days of handwritten entries. Our writer does a good job of filling up the page when he does write. His entries are steady one for each day from January 1st through June 27th at which point he breaks for the summer and returns home. There are a few entries while at home but mainly they recommence upon his return to school in the fall. However during this time he came down with a terrible infection in his ear and almost lost his hearing. During his illness he did not keep his diary. The author's entries show his love for the subject of astronomy which he writes about a number of times:“January 27th It was a fine day in some respects but not a very fair sky. Tonight I have just been looking at an eclipse of the moon which took place between seven and nine o’clock tonight. About five and a half digits of the moons phase was obscured. Some flying clouds were in the way for while but I made some very fine observations on it through my young telescope. I made quite a discovery by seeing the mountains and valleys on the moons rise though my telescope so small as it is. It certainly is a magnificent scene to behold such an astronomical phenomena. This is the second eclipse of the moon that I have had the good fortune to witness. No more will be visible in this country this year. I also made an observation on Jupiter but without any success. It is now ten o’clock and I have not been getting my Greek. I must retire and rise early and get to work.” “August 7th The day was very clear scarcely a cloud being visible. An east wind blew most of the day. Air very cool. This was the great eclipse day. The sun was eclipsed in the afternoon beginning at 4.25 ½ and ending at 6.23 ½ lasting 1.58 one hour and fifty eight minutes. The eclipse was very near total here looking somewhat like this only a small rim of the north east side being visible. Venus came out in full splendor and the sky became dark. The chickens went to roost. The appearance was as if night was approaching. But the aspect was soon changed to the reverse and daylight came again. In the southern part of this state the eclipse was total. This is the largest eclipse of the kind that can be seen in the U.S. this century. The air was perfectly clear during the whole time.” The diary entries reveal that Isaac was a Southern sympathizer and was possessed of many of the derogatory racial attitudes and notions of his day:write for fuller description unknown
