‎Édition originale du Journal de Green pour les années 1940-1954. Les années de guerre et d’après-guerre forment les tomes III à VI du Journal, publiés dans la collection "L’épi" chez Plon: Devant la porte sombre (1940-1943); L’Œil de l’ouragan (1943-1945); Le Revenant (1946-1950) et Le Miroir intérieur (1950-1954). Cette œuvre monumentale sera continuée jusqu’en 1998 pour former, en 19 volumes, un des témoignages majeurs du XXe siècle. "Ce Journal dont les titres sont à eux seuls révélateurs des thèmes de l’obscurité et du secret qui habitent Julien Green n’entend aucunement être le reflet de l’actualité politique – que Julien Green a en horreur comme il le dit lui-même – mais il tente d’être le miroir d’une âme qui, dans le quotidien de l’intimité, de l’amitié – l’amitié tient une grande place dans ce Journal, – dans les réflexions, les méditations, les prises de conscience, les renoncements, les reniements, les désirs et les plaisirs tourmentants et tourmentés, les joies pures et impures, cherche son cheminement, son rythme…" (Joël Schmidt). Exemplaire du tirage ordinaire numéroté sur papier d’alfa mousse, hors commerce pour trois volumes. Index alphabétique à la fin du tome VI. Envoi autographe de l’auteur à Albert Béguin sur chaque volume. Écrivain et éditeur suisse, Albert Béguin (La Chaux-de-Fonds, 1901-Rome, 1957) était un spécialiste de Balzac, de Nerval et du romantisme allemand. Il fut le successeur de Marcel Raymond à l’Université de Bâle après 1937 et fonda les Cahiers du Rhône en 1941, avant de devenir le deuxième directeur de la revue Esprit dans les années 1950. Julien Green évoque à plusieurs reprises cet homme qu’il estimait et avec qui il était souvent question de Bernanos. "10 juin 1954: Les pages de Béguin sur l’enfance et la mort chez Bernanos sont dignes de ce grand sujet. Il n’a écrit de meilleur, me semble-t-il." "26 juin: Déjeuné avec Béguin qui me dit plusieurs choses importantes, car il est de ceux – combien sont-ils? quatre? cinq? – qui parlent pour dire quelque chose dont on se souvient." Quelques notes au crayon dans les marges, de la main d’Albert Béguin. En 1957, Julien Green donna une préface pour l’hommage Albert Béguin, étapes d’une pensée, rencontres avec Albert Béguin publié par Les Cahiers du Rhône.
