The first issue of a monthly journal edited by Andrew Reid d. 1767 and Michel de la Roche 1710 - 1731 which continued until December 1736 and was then superseded by ' History of the works of the learned ' in January 1737. Possibly one of the most important in Great Britain was ' The present state of the republick of letters ' which carried announcements and abstracts of new books on all major subjects in an effort to cultivate the life of the mind.
