Miss Hasse and H. Schiller Shkol'nik
Son i snovideniia. Nauchno-obosnovannoe tolkovanie snov sostavlennoe znamenitym mediumom Miss-Hasse: bolee 1000 snov. S peredovoi stat'ei o sne i snovideniiakh psikho-frenologa H. Shiller-Shkol'nika
1912. Sleep and dreams. A scientifically-grounded interpretation of dreams assembled by the famous medium Miss Hasse: over 1000 dreams. With an introductory article about sleep and dreams by the psycho-phrenologist H. M. Schiller-Shkol'nik. Warsaw: izdatel'stvo "Razsvet" 1912. Slim octavo 23 à 12.5 cm. Original embossed red cloth over boards; decorative endpapers; 58 1 4 36 pp. Illustrations throughout. Light soil to wrappers; spine cracked still about very good. First edition. The most popular dream interpretation handbook in pre-revolutionary Russia this text offers an alphabetized glossary of dream images and their possible meanings. Little is known about the author Miss Hasse a famous medium supposedly born in a Polish family in a town called Milava in 1854 then a part of the Russian empire. Miss Hasse performed before large audiences conducting séances and managed to amass a fortune riding the wave of popularity of esoterica in the late 19th century. In 1895 she opened a publishing house "MISS HASSE" which specialized in pseudoscientific texts on psycho-phrenology palmistry hypnosis and other esoteric subjects. The publishing house printed works by other popular mediums such as one H.M. Shiller-Shkol'nik. Excerpts from his two earlier books "A sure method for getting to know yourself and others" 1906 and "Hypnosis" 1911 are added to the end of the handbook. The appended text is illustrated with technical drawings. Several pages of testimonials apparently sent by individuals from all over the Russian empire from Kiev to Harbin close the publication suggesting the great reach of the mediums. The handbook was reprinted in 1990 by Moscau Redline press. This first edition is not in the Russian State Library. The Russian National Library's copy is marked lost. Not in KVK OCLC. hardcover books

Marilyn
New York: Grosset & Dunlap Inc. 1973. Marilyn"<br /> Norman Mailer's Lavish Tribute to Hollywood's Most Enduring Icon<br /> Signed by Norman Mailer and Lawrence Schiller<br /> <br /> MONROE Marilyn. Marilyn a Biography by Norman Mailer. Pictures by the world's foremost photographers. New York: Grosset & Dunlap 1973. <br /> <br /> First Edition First Printing Stated. Quarto 10 1/2 x 9 1/4 inches; 267 x 235 mm. 2 signed leaf verso blank 1-270 1 1 blank pp. Photographic illustrations throughout many in full color. <br /> <br /> Publisher's padded white silk front cover with title in blind spine lettered in blank marbled endpapers. A fine copy. Housed in the publisher's black cloth clamshell case inset photograph on front panel marbled paper lining near fine.<br /> <br /> A sumptuous and visually arresting tribute to Marilyn Monroe combining Norman Mailer's speculative and highly personal meditation on Monroe's life with one of the richest assembled collections of Marilyn photography ever published. Produced on a grand scale and lavishly illustrated throughout the volume captures the mythic transformation of Norma Jeane Mortenson into perhaps the defining American cultural icon of the twentieth century.<br /> <br /> Mailer's text - part biography part cultural essay part psychological portrait - deliberately avoids the conventions of traditional biography. As Mailer himself acknowledged much of the narrative was constructed through intuition and imaginative reconstruction creating not merely a life of Monroe but an exploration of celebrity sexuality vulnerability and fame in postwar America.<br /> <br /> The extraordinary photographic content remains the book's greatest achievement. Drawn from the work of many of the twentieth century's leading photographers - including Richard Avedon Cecil Beaton Eve Arnold Philippe Halsman Bert Stern and Milton Greene - the images chronicle Monroe's evolution from studio contract player to international phenomenon. Together they form one of the most important visual archives devoted to Marilyn Monroe ever issued in book form.<br /> <br /> This signed limited issue elegantly bound and preserved in its original clamshell case is among the most desirable presentations of Mailer's celebrated Monroe volume - a striking fusion of Hollywood glamour photographic history and American literary celebrity.<br /> <br /> Marilyn Monroe; born Norma Jeane Mortenson 1926-1962 was an American actress model and singer. Known for playing comic "blonde bombshell" characters she became one of the most popular sex symbols of the 1950s and early 1960s as well as an emblem of the era's sexual revolution. She was a top-billed actress for a decade and her films grossed $200 million equivalent to $2 billion in 2024 by the time of her death in 1962. Long after her death Monroe remains a pop culture icon. In 1999 the American Film Institute ranked her as the sixth-greatest female screen legend from the Golden Age of Hollywood.<br /> <br /> Nachem Malech Mailer 1923-2007 known by his pen name Norman Kingsley Mailer was an American novelist journalist playwright and filmmaker. In a career spanning over six decades Mailer had eleven best-selling books at least one in each of the seven decades after World War II. Mailer's 1973 biography of Monroe usually designated Marilyn: A Biography was not approached as a traditional biography. Mailer read the available biographies watched Monroe's films and looked at photographs of Monroe; for the rest of it Mailer stated "I speculated. New York: Grosset & Dunlap, Inc., 1973 unknown

MRS DR WILLIAM SCHILLER[?]
1936 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY OF A BITTER RESENTFUL SELF ABSORBED NEW WIFE OF A MEDICAL DOCTOR WORKING HIS WAY OUT HIS MARRIAGE
Cleveland OHIO OH. Very Good. 1936. On offer is an original manuscript diary and fascinating piece of Americana being a diary written by a woman who seems to be the most self centered young woman that one can imagine. Of the 2/3 or so filled diary has entries dripping with self absorption brimming with self entitlement with a backdrop of physical pain and illness this woman may or may not being feeling. A snippet that says much: 'one of Bill's patients died last night at 12:30 so my sleep was broken
' later in a very serious tone: 'Mother just discovered Tommy our canary bird dead. We didn't even know he was sick.' This woman is a psychology thesis in human form. While unidentified we believe she is married to a Doctor William Bill Schiller though it could be Schillier. Our author is a late 20s maybe early 30s woman recently married but her family may have pushed her into it somehow. A newish doctor still wanting to go back to school for surgical training he works day and night. He is most likely staying out on purpose and by August they are in the process of divorcing. She writes: 'Spent all afternoon trying to chase up my will o'wisp husband who had a call to make. It annoys me trying to find him all the time.' Parallel to his excessive work is her procrastination and failure as an author of children's books and magazine articles. She notes one rejection notice after another. The diary is littered with complaints: he is cheap he is inattentive he is a mamma's boy he is unfeeling and on. Physically she complains about back pain toothache heart palpitations always tired having the 'jumps' all over. She complains that people think she just has a case of 'nerves'. She complains of pains in her legs. She takes shots for pain and in the writing one can see how she gets groggy and the writing gets sloppier. It seems that she takes the shots frequently. She is jealous of the relationship between her husband and his mother and his aunt and is sarcastic about them several times. He works long hours and she complains that she is left alone far too much and suggests that he is having relationships with other women. She thinks he is cold and distant from her. At one point she writes: 'I suppose I ought to get 'continental attitude' toward marriage. Along with the complaints are some tidbits of the times: news of the Simpson affair in England she admires the King's passion that he would throw it all away for his woman playing the new game Monopoly going to Kaase's Restaurant charity work . The holidays make for interesting reading as she dwells on her loss of her husband and is bitter. At no time in the diary does she ever take any responsibilty for what is happening to her it is always someone else's fault. Many names and relatives names are written about inside and local collector or historians may well establish the exact specifics of these people.
