Né en 1969 et mort en 1782, son existence traverse, pratiquement, tout le XVIIIème siècle. Ceci explique que l'Historiographie portugaise qui étudie cette époque s'intéresse vivement à la période avant et post Pombal. Presque trente ans de gouvernement pendant lesquels des événements importants sur le plan social, économique, militaire et culturel ont eu lieu, événements avec des mutations, en un sens, radicales, dans les divers domaines ont, forcément, fait de ce personnage l'objet des plus diverses spéculations. En même temps qu'il mettait sur pied des réformes et des innovations, Pombal exerça son gouvernement d'une mais de fer. Il porta préjudice à un certain nombre de familles aristocrates, mais pas à toute noblesse. Il persécuta certains secteurs de l'Église mais pas l'ensemble de l'Église portugaise. Envisageant la partie comme une totalité, certains courants libéraux du XIXème siècle ont fait de Pombal leur héros et le maître de leurs idéologies. Du fait qu'il avait porté un coup aux Jésuites, la croisade anti-jésuite des républicains lui a consacré la plus grandiose statue de Lisbonne. De même, du fait de ces quelques familles puissantes détruites il devint, pour beaucoup, le protecteur de la bourgeoisie et, c'est ainsi que, du début jusqu?à la fin de ce "portrait" on réaffirme le manque d'objectivité qui caractérise, en général, les études sur Pombal. Indépendamment d'avoir été un bon ou un mauvais homme d'État, il fut sans aucun doute un despote, un tyran par beaucoup de ses actions, mais il fut aussi un réformateur et, surtout, le précurseur du Portugal moderne.

1911-1915 Diary of an Engaging Pittsburgh High and Carnegie Tech Student Coming-Of-Age before Enlisting in the Great War
Pittsburgh Pennsylvania PA. Very Good with no dust jacket. Hardcover. On offer is diary filled with the musings of a student age 17 when he begins writing that provides exceptional insight into the experience of a teenage boy in the years before World War One. The diary belonged to Edward Dudley Tucker 1893-1977 who went by Dudley SEE BIO NOTES AT END OF LISTING. Dudley kept the diary regularly from January through August of 1911 while completing his junior year of high school. He returns to his diary for a couple entries in 1912 when he had just completed a summer job at an electrical company and is beginning his studies at Carnegie Tech which would later become a part of Carnegie Mellon University. The diary concludes with a final entry in April of 1915 where Dudley writes of the death and burial of his familys 17-year-old dog Toby. He also uses a few additional pages to note his expenses while attending Carnegie Tech. Tipped into the diary are two manuscript letters and a printed dance card from Dudleys high school dance in April 1912. The two letters are from 1911 one being a newsy familiar letter written to Dudley by his friend Hazel and another being a detailed letter written by Dudley to his Aunt Helen where he provides great detail about his studies in senior year and his devoted work on his model airplanes. His diary is written in a ledger book allowing him freedom to write extensive and descriptive entries which he often does. Some entries span pages and provide details of his experiences lists of friends names and even drawings. Other entries are just a quick line or two. Jan 20 1911. We initiated Cornell into the club the 500 Club to-nite we did a lot of things to him. We were all dressed up so he wouldnt know us. Dec 15 1912. At the back of the book is a list titled Things I want To Do. From context this list was written after his return from WWI or during a leave. It includes: . Fix my army stuff to my walls Find a way to take a picture through a telescope Put electric lights in my cabinet. and more. For a social historian this diary gives a fine look inside the life of an American teenage boy in the years immediately preceding WWI. A genealogist would find the list of school friends very helpful in researching family and community connections. BIO NOTES: Dudley was born in Westboro Massachusetts to parents Frances Augusta Robinson and Curtis Allen Tucker and raised in Edgewood Allegheny Pennsylvania He graduated from Pittsburgh Central High School in 1912 and later graduated from Carnegie Tech. He became a civil engineer and worked in a variety of places including Koppers Company. He served in World War One from November 1915 through June 1919. In 1923 he married Mary Strang in Wilkinsburg PA. Together they had one daughter Mary Jane Tucker. The journal was kept in a ledger book measuring 11.75x7.5 inches. It contains 100 numbered pages plus 6 others inserted into it. It is about 50% complete. The covers are in good condition as are the binding and the pages. The handwriting is legible. EAST LYNN MASSACHUSETTS MASS MA BOSTON AREA. Good. 1913. On offer is an original 1913 handwritten manuscript diary by Edward E. Avery who lived in and around East Lynn Massachusetts mentioning frequent trips to Swampscott East Lynn Boston Salem and Olympia. This is a very interesting look at a pre World War I American male as he passes his days dating drinking bowling and hanging out with his pals. While he initially begins the year seeming a placid fellow as the weather warms so does his temperament as he has a scrap or two with his pals and he has plenty of girl trouble and not only trouble between different girl friends but also with their parents. His very last sentence for the year on December 31st seems to sum it all up: "I suppose there will be trouble now for we were almost caught tonight." While we are uncertain of his age though most certainly a young man 20-25 we approximate or profession here are snippets that will enlighten: 1913 "Janaury15th Cold in a.m. Warmed up and rained a little in the evening. Tonight I meet G. F. at 7:15. We took the 7:30 train for Salem. Went into the Empire Theatre to see "The Easiest Way." It was a great play and played by a good company. The 11:09 was twenty minutes late so we didn't get home until 12. I won't see her again until Sat. evening. None of the fellows up to the house have been near me except Stewart and he came down Sunday because I asked him to so as to pay him what I owed him." "January 19th Clear and very warm for this time of year. I didn't get up until noon. I read all the p.m. Went across the street and engaged board then met G. F. We went to the Chinese restaurant and had supper. She came up in the room until 9:30. 1860s SUPER ORIGINAL PAIR OF MANUSCRIPT DIARIES HANDWRITTEN BY A DEDICATED STUDENT OF THE NOTED NEWTON ENGLISH AND CLASSICAL SCHOOL
Massachusetts. Good. 1861. On offer is an outstanding pair of journals written at the outbreak of the American Civil War. Each volume measures 8 inches by 6 1/2 inches and contains 144 pages essentially 100% complete. The journals run from April 1861 through December 1862. They are hard cover and the pages are intact and in good condition. The handwriting is clear and legible. The author is Edward Everett Lovejoy. Research shows that he was born in 1845 in Boston MA and died at age 70 in Bangor ME in 1915. At the time of writing Lovejoy was a student at the well-known West Newton English and Classical School. An Illustrated Biographical Catalogue of the Principals Teachers and Students of the West Newton English and Classical School West Newton Mass p118 . This school was established by Nathaniel Topliff Allen and he was assisted by his brother George. Both of these men and their brothers and wives were noted educators. Nathaniel Bell George Bell and his wife are mentioned in the journals. To quote from historical notes associated with the Allen Papers: "The school was progressive in every way providing equal educational opportunities for girls as well as boys in racially mixed classes. The inclusion of gymnastics as part of the educational offering along with a pure kindergarten were also educational firsts. Allen required student's to keep daily journals that were critiqued every two weeks. ." Lovejoy's diaries are certainly part of these daily journals. Not only are they scrupulously maintained they are also evaluated and his teachers notes can be found in the margins. Most of the entries naturally refer to school life activities. He notes class presentations assignments and daily interactions with staff and friends. He studied English Grammar Spelling Mathematics Natural Philosophy Geography Music and French as well as taking part in sports such as cricket swimming and baseball. He was also elected 2nd Lieutenant for the schools cadet corps. "Mr. William read my name this morning to be in the first class in . I have been in Mr. James Allen's class . but now I have to speak up here before the school and recite today in spelling. Mr. N.T. Allen gives us words from the dictionary and we write them in the little books and hand them in to him and he corrects them."Apr 26 1861 The margin note from his teacher reads: "Well begun in many respects. Sorry to see so many words misspelled". Today I recited in Botany then in Geography then in Grammar then in Natural Philosophy. We had a very hard time in Natural Philosophy. There were so many engines to explain about and explain all about the different pieces of machinery and their use" May 22 1861. He mentions a visit to the Boston Aquarial and Zoological Gardens and seeing a white whale Beluga June 6 Slipped into that page is a printed excerpt from the Boston Journal describing the exhibit. By far the most interesting entry is dated April 21 1861: "I heard that yesterday that a man on State Street Boston was discussing with another and one said something about secession and the other man drew a pistol and shot the other down but did not kill him." Apr 21 1861 He goes on to describe a subsequent riot by a mob in Baltimore. This riot known as the Baltimore Riot of 1861 or the Pratt Street Massacre took place when a mob of Confederate sympathizers set upon a column of Union soldiers passing through to Washington. It resulted in the first Union deaths of the Civil War: ". while the troops were marching along one man snatched a musket from one of the troop and shot him through the back and killed him ." Apr 21 1861. The Civil War came to his door when his parents visited him at school to tell him that an acquaintance who worked for his father had died from exposure on duty. May 26 1862. Records indicate that after graduating he went into business apparently trading in lumber and stocks. These two journals are an outstanding resource for a historian studying American education in the mid19th century. They provide a fascinating glimpse into the efforts during this time of turmoil to provide a classical education to young people. BROOKLYN NEW YORK NY. Fair. 1889. On offer is an interesting original manuscript diary of Edward Hutchinson Robbins Lyman b. Feb. 10 1819 Northampton Massachusetts d. 1899 Brooklyn NY who was a wealthy merchant banker and philanthropist donor Academy of Music Theatre and Lyman Plant House Conservatory in Northampton. He was the grandson of Edward Hutchinson Robbins 1758-1837 Lt. Governor of MA 1802-1806 and a great-uncle of president Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Lyman's sister Catherine Robbins Lyman married Warren Delano in 1843. These were the grandparents of FDR. The diary was maintained in a volume dated gilt 1884 with pages crossed out to reflect 1889. The 6" x 9.5" leather spine chipped worn front cover loose book has about 75 pages with entries mostly few lines each from Jan. 1 - May 3 1889. The diary belonged to Lyman although he does not sign it and he notes his 70th birthday on the page for Feb. 10 1889 etc. Brief but fascinating content. Personal and business. In part: Jan. 8 - Katie's finger amputated @ 5 1/2 pm. Jan. 21 - Brooklyn Academy of Music Directors Meeting Election Brooklyn Gaslight Co. for organization. Jan. 22 - To Northampton supper at Fort Hill site of Academy of Music dinner with the Brewers. Went in a sleigh. Jan. 25 - Cut off coupons at the Stock Exchange Vaults. Jan. 27 - Heard Mr. Collier preach "What have these sheep done."; Feb. 3 - "Satan cast out Satan". Note: Referred to later as H. ASEA ABOARD THE SS WEST HARCUVAR. Good. 1927. On offer is an utterly charming from a fascinating perspective original 1927 manuscript trip diary handwritten by E.J. Austin Deck Boy on the SS W. Harcuvar. Edward as we learn from a tucked in news clipping about the 38 year old man uses a 'Composition' notebook beginning Sunday April 17th to May 31st while undated the year matches up to 1927. He begins with the first entry as if a the book is a long letter to his mother and family. Typically his first few days aboard ship as a new crewman is fraught with the highs and lows: the sea air makes for a big appetite and then the rolling of the waves make for a 'green' sailor in both definitions of the situation. By the end of the first few weeks he is an old tar taking his turn at the wheel in between paint chipping sessions at the forecastle. The book also contains a letter perhaps unfinished tucked in dated Summer 1928. At the back of the 8vo book are some religious writings including "The Path of Freedom" Presence of God. And the policy of making common cause with the Protestant Hollanders against the Spaniards and Portuguese, who had first secured a footing in Japan and were powerful in the neighbouring town of Nagasaki, would have been a sound one, had the latter remained supreme. But, when the English landed, the Dutch had already obtained privileges and had established their trade in the country; and what ought to have been foreseen inevitably came to pass.
