A splendid copy of a scarce American juvenile. Appleton issued these four titles separately as chapbooks in wrappers but also issued a few sets of an edition collecting these four titles with their original titles pages bound together in handsome half morocco as 'Picture Story Books By Great Authors and Great Painters." There are full-page wood-engraved frontispieces to each of the four titles and approximately 400 smaller wood-engravings throughout the text. Most pages have more than one illustration. A splendid and beautifully preserved copy with no evidence of handling by the generations of young "readers" to which it would have been so appealing. To be critical there is a tiny break at the cap of the spine 1 mm. missing at the left-hand side some minor rubbing along the hinges particularly the front and the corners and moderate transfer marks at the outermost 1 cm. of the corners of the endpapers stains to those portions of the endpapers which touch the turn-ins of the morocco leather binding at the covers. No signatures bookplates coloring by previous owners or marks of any sort. This was a popular compilation; Appleton reissued the plates twenty years later with revised title pages in 1867.
