Mary Shelley
The British Critic - 1818 Volume IX with a review of Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein"

This is a volume of the publication "THE BRITISH CRITIC" that contains a rare early 1st edition book review of the classic horror tale "FRANKENSTEIN or The Modern Prometheus" by Mary Shelley. 1818; F.C. and J. Rivington; London. Volume IX comprised of six monthly issues January through June. Within the April issue is an anonymous scathing review of "Frankenstein" published only a few months after the January 1818 1st printing of the novel. "Frankenstein" is also listed within the "Table of Books Reviewed" at the front as well as within the "Index" at the back. Three-quarter leather binding with gilt lettering on the spine.

The rather lengthy review spans seven pages and was quite harsh.
"We need scarcely say that these volumes have neither principle object nor moral; the horror which abounds in them is too grotesque and bizarre ever to approach near the sublime and when we did not hurry over the pages in disgust we sometimes paused to laugh outright: and yet we suspect that the diseased and wandering imagination which has stepped out of all legitimate bounds to frame these disjointed combinations and unnatural adventures might be disciplined into something better."

.as well as inarguably sexist:
"The writer of it is we understand a female; this is an aggravation of that which is the prevailing fault of the novel; but if our authoress can forget the gentleness of her sex it is no reason why we should; and we shall therefore dismiss the novel without further comment."

Condition:
There are some stains on the covers. Shelf wear to the edges of the boards. Worn cover corners. The top and bottom edges of the spine are worn. Both covers have partially split from the spine and are loose and shaky and holding only by strings. Nice interior - the pages are mostly clean with only some foxing to the first few and last few pages. "Bath Public Reference Library" label affixed to the front pastedown. Overall the book is in Fair condition due to the covers being loose.
F.C. and J. Rivington hardcover

The Last Man
Gray Rabbit Publishing 2010. Hardcover. New/New.
Author: Mary Shelley

Publisher: Gray Rabbit Publishing

Binding: Hardcover

ISBN: 9781604599350

Release Date: 2010

Number Of Pages: 362

Details: Mary Shelley founded modern science fiction with her 1816 classic Frankenstein. A decade later she inaugurated the subgenre of post-apocalyptic sf with the less-lauded and less-known The Last Man. Shelley used the found-manuscript trope for this book claiming to have discovered a series of seemingly connected stories on various pages in the Cumaean Sibyl's Cave and stitched them together into this originally three-volume work. The story told here of a far-future late 21st century is related by the last man the sole survivor of a planet-wide plague that has brought an end to human civilization. The Last Man was published during a more optimistic time and arrived on the scene to poor reviews and poor sales it was a novel out of time. It languished for a century and a half until its scholarly rediscovery in the 1960s which had its own pessimistic outlook. Now in an era where global disaster through causes seen or unforeseen becomes increasingly plausible Shelley's tale of the "stormy and ruin-fraught passions of man" finds a new home and a new audience. The Last Man is published here complete and unabridged in one-volume with Shelley's own footnotes and introduction. Mary Wollsteonecraft Godwin was born in 1797 the daughter of author Mary Wollstonecraft who wrote Vindication of the Rights of Woman and radical philosophy William Godwin. Raised by her father following her mother's early death her education came through contact with her father's intellectual circle and her own reading. She met poet and author Percy Bysshe Shelley in 1812 married him in 1814 and in response to a bet among her husband's circle of friends wrote Frankenstein in 1816. Mary bore four children three of whom died in infancy. Her husband died in 1822 and she returned to England with her surviving son to support herself as a writer of novel short stories and travelogues and as the editor of her husband's works. She died in 1851.
Gray Rabbit Publishing hardcover

Broadview Press 1996. Hardcover. The book offers a sweeping account of war plague love and desolation. It is the sort of apocalyptic vision that was widespread at the time though Shelley’s treatment of the theme goes beyond the conventional; it is extraordinarily interesting and deeply moving. If The Last Man is in some sense a “conventional†text of the period it is also intensely personal in its origin; Shelley refers in her journal to the last man as her alter ego “the last relic of a beloved race my companions extinct before me.†The novel thus develops out of and contributes to a network of story and idea in which fantasy allusion convention and autobiography are densely interwoven. This new version of the first edition 1826 sets out to provide not only a thoroughly annotated text but also contextual materials to help the reader acquire knowledge of the intellectual and literary milieu out of which the novel emerged. Appendices include material on “the last man†as early nineteenth-century hero texts from the debate initiated by Malthus in 1798 about the adequacy of food supply to sustain human population various accounts of outbreaks of plague and Shelley’s poems representing her feelings after the death of her husband.
Broadview Press hardcover

The Monthly Review - or Literary Journal 1818 Volume LXXXV with an early review of "FRANKENSTEIN" by Mary Shelley
This is a volume of the publication "The Monthly Review ~ or Literary Journal" Volume LXXXV that contains a rare book review of the classic horror tale "FRANKENSTEIN or The Modern Prometheus" by Mary Shelley. 1818; J. Porter; London. The rather uncomplimentary review appears in the April 1818 issue and was written anonymously - the reviewer refers to the novel as "an uncouth story" and argues that "a serious examination is scarcely necessary for so eccentric a vagary of the imagination as this tale presents." This review was published only a few months after the January 1818 first publication of Frankenstein. The book is also listed within the table of contents at the front of the volume.Condition:The gilt title on the spine has faded. Unfortunately this copy is missing both the front and back covers. The pages however are in very nice condition with only some occasional mild foxing. There is a bit of paper remnant affixed to the top edge of the rear end paper. Overall in Fair condition due to the missing covers else very good. J. Porter

The Quarterly Review - Volume XVIII October 1817 & January 1818 with a review of 'FRANKENSTEIN' by Mary Shelley

This is a volume of the publication "The Quarterly Review" that contains a rare early possibly the first book review of the classic horror tale "FRANKENSTEIN or The Modern Prometheus" by Mary Shelley. 1818; John Murray; London. Volume XVIII comprised of the October 1817 and January 1818 issues. This review was published in January 1818 - the same month as the January 1818 first publication of Frankenstein. The book title is also listed within the table of contents at the front of the January issue and in the Index at the back of the volume. The rather scathing review spans seven pages and was written by John Wilson Croker - he writes "Our readers will guess from this summary what a tissue of horrible and disgusting absurdity this work presents" and ponders "whether the head or the heart of the author be the most diseased." The "New Publications" section within the October issue contains a notice for new JANE AUSTEN works: "Northanger Abbey a Romance; and Persuasion a Novel. By the Author of Pride and Prejudice Mansfield Park &c. with a Biographical Notice of the Author." Note: This volume contains two separate issues - October 1817 No. XXXV and January 1818 No. XXXVI.however the title page at the beginning of the volume curiously states "May" 1818 and not "January" 1818.

Condition:
There are splits at the corners of the spine though both covers are firmly attached. The corners of the back cover are worn. Tight binding with no loose pages. Nice interior - the pages are mostly clean with only some mild foxing to the first 10 or so and the last 10 or so pages; pages 65-71 have a small light stain at the top edge.
