SHELLEY, Percy Bysshe
Posthumous poems
London: Printed for John and Henry L. Hunt 1824. xi 1 415pp. 1. Finely bound in nineteenth-century gilt-tooled red morocco by Maclehose of Glasgow marbled endpapers T.E.G others uncut. Extremities a trifle rubbed slightly marked corners a little bumped. Internally a little spotting to preliminaries else a fine generously margined unpressed copy. 'No man was ever more devoted than he to the endeavour of making those around him happy; no man ever possessed friends more unfeignedly attached to him. The ungrateful world did not feel his loss and the gap it made seemed to close as quickly over his memory as the murderous sea above his living frame. Hereafter men will lament that his transcendent powers of intellect were extinguished before they had bestowed on them their choicest treasures'. A finely bound example of the first edition of a collection of Shelley's verse assembled by his widow - Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley - after his death in Italy aged just 29 and lovingly prefaced by a biographical tribute which reveals much of the poet's nature the context of the composition of many of his works details of the couple's final years whilst Shelley was plagued by 'ill health and continual pain' and the circumstances of his death and burial: 'Rome received his ashes; they are deposited beneath its weed-grown wall and "the world's sole monument" is enriched by his remains'. The contents includes unpublished work gleaned from 'among his manuscript books' such as 'Julian and Maddalo' and 'The Witch of Atlas' translations - including 'The Cyclops from Eurypides' and 'Hymn to Mercury from Homer' - and other pieces either 'scattered in periodical works' or like 'Alastor or the Spirit of Solitude' already difficult to obtain in the 1820s. As William St. Clair notes in The Reading Nation in the Romantic Period 2004 the work was published 'by the help of a guarantee given by three friends of Mary Shelley' Bedddoes Proctor and Kelsall; just 500 copies were printed. Of these 309 copies - priced at 15s - were sold in two months 'but after the intervention of Shelley's father 160 copies in sheets and thirty one in boards were withdrawn and consigned to Sir. T. Shelley for destruction'. Mary Shelley's devotion to her husband's memory and determination to disseminate and republish his works - as demonstrated by this initial volume of Posthumous poems - continued throughout the 1820s and 1830s albeit frequently tempered by the continually disruptive actions of her father-in-law who was almost equally as determined to tie her hands in that regard - with stipulations on allowances for the upbringing of their son Percy Florence. Jackson p. 507. First edition. 8vo. Printed for John and Henry L. Hunt hardcover

Posthumous Poems of Percy Bysshe Shelley
London: John and Henry L. Hunt 1824. An attractive and fresh copy with a few bumps and scuffs. Octavo 415 pp. bound without the errata; contemporary polished green calf

An attractive copy of this important collection with a short but poignant biographical notice by Mary Shelley.

Shelley died in July 1822 drowned in the sea off Livorno. Mary spent the ensuing year in Genoa with Leigh Hunt and his family but returned to London in 1823 where she was granted a small allowance by Percy's disapproving father Sir Timothy and busied herself with literary work including editing many of his poems and manuscripts for this edition. It includes Julian and Maddalo The Witch of Atlas Letter to Maria Gisborne The Triumph of Life Prince Athanase Ode to Naples Mont Blanc as well as fifty-nine 'Miscellaneous Poems' nine 'Fragments' five translations and Alastor included because the original volume published in 1816 was now so scarce that even Mary had found it difficult to track down a copy.

. SHELLEY, Percy Bysshe
Queen Mab
London: W. Clark 1821 1821. 8vo. 230x140mm. pp. 182 2. First published albeit pirate edition printed by William Clark assisted by the book pirate Thomas Moses whose "T.M." monogram appears below Clark's imprint on the final page of the text. Original drab boards backed with green cloth remains of paper label on joints. Corners worn and edges a little rubbed boards marked in places. Hinges cracked with some loosening. Slightly foxed but otherwise very good internally. Front pastedown has booklabel of Christopher Clark Geest. First published in a small edition with a dedication to Harriet in 1813 Queen Mab was then printed twice without Shelley's permission in 1821. This copy is the version with the notes printed in full and with the dedication removed. It also has the final advertising leaf and some intentionally missing words on pp146-148. A scandalous work published scandalously "pounced upon" by the Society for the Prevention of Vice and resulting in the imprisonment of Clark the printer and bookseller. It also led to Shelley's radical ideas on subjects including vegetarianism and atheism being openly discussed in the public forum. Always dangerous. Granniss 19. London: W. Clark 1821 hardcover

Shelley, Percy
Queen Mab
London: P.B. Shelley 23 Chapel Street Grosvenor Square 1813. First Edition. 8vo 200 x 124mm pp. 6 240 2. Shelley’s first major poem. Original boards joints cracked but holding the interior is intact many copies have Shelley’s name and the printer’s imprint cut out as the book was being hunted by moralists and royalists. A virgin and unmutilated copy with the title page dedication and final leaf intact. One of only 250 copies printed for private distribution rare unrepaired and in anything approaching this condition. Morocco case. The poem is written in the form of a fairy tale that presents a future vision of a utopia on earth consisting of nine cantos and seventeen notes. Queen Mab a fairy the name from one referred to in Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet descends in a chariot to a dwelling where Ianthe is sleeping on a couch. Queen Mab detaches Ianthe’s spirit or soul from her sleeping body and transports it on a celestial tour to Queen Mab’s palace at the edge of the universe. Queen Mab interprets analyses and explains Ianthe’s dreams. She shows her visions of the past present and the future. The past and present are characterized by oppression injustice misery and suffering caused by monarchies commerce and religion. In the future however the condition of man will be improved and a utopia will emerge. Two key points are emphasized: 1 death is not to be feared; and 2 the future offers the possibility of perfectibility of man by moral means. Humanity and nature can be reconciled and work in unison and harmony not against each other. While Ianthe is asleep on the couch Henry waits to kiss her. He never does. Queen Mab returns Ianthe’s spirit or soul to her body.

Ianthe then awakens with a “gentle start.†Of the seventeen notes six deal with the issues of atheism vegetarianism free love the role of necessity in the physical and spiritual realm and the relationship of Christ and the precepts of Christianity. From a critical standpoint in this early poem Shelley forced together his youthful opinions into a scheme of dogmatic materialism. His objective was to show that reform and improvement in the lot of mankind were possible.

In her notes to the work Mary Shelley explained the author’s goals: He was animated to greater zeal by compassion for his fellow-creatures. His sympathy was excited by the misery with which the world is bursting. He witnessed the sufferings of the poor and was aware of the evils of ignorance. He desired to induce every rich man to despoil himself of superfluity and to create a brotherhood of property and service and was ready to be the first to lay down the advantages of his birth. He was of too uncompromising a disposition to join any party. He did not in his youth look forward to gradual improvement: nay in those days of intolerance now almost forgotten it seemed as easy to look forward to the sort of millennium of freedom and brotherhood which he thought the proper state of mankind as to the present reign of moderation and improvement. Ill health made him believe that his race would soon be run; that a year or two was all he had of life. He desired that these years should be useful and illustrious. He saw in a fervent call on his fellow-creatures to share alike the blessings of the creation to love and serve each other the noblest work that life and time permitted him. In this spirit he composed Queen Mab. P.B. Shelley, 23, Chapel Street, Grosvenor Square unknown

Shelley, Percy Bysshe
Queen Mab
London: Printed and Published by W. Clark 1821. First published edition. 182 2 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Contemporary three quarter green morocco and cloth. Bookplate of Barnton. Fine. First published edition. 182 2 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Though a piracy by William Clark - with the help of book pirate Thomas Moses whose monogram appears in black letter below the imprint on the penultimate leaf - the is the first published edition of Shelley's first poem of any length. It was privately printed in 1813 in a very small edition and originally contained a poetical dedication to Harriet. Shelley was in the habit of cutting out the title page and the dedication in copies he gave to friends to avoid his inflammatory views about politics the family and religion being noted by the authorities.

There are two known versions of this edition the first that prints the notes in their entirety and excises the dedication and a second that includes the dedication and deletes words and lines from the notes. Shelley wrote a letter from Pisa on June 22 1821 both "exonerating" himself and asking to "restrain the sale." Clark threatened by prosecution for Vice voluntarily discontinued distribution after selling about only 50 copies. He was brought to trial and found guilty serving four months. Clark's piracy was the first of three caused Shelley's poem and the ideas therein to be discussed publicly for the first time.

This copy has certain sections omitted on pp. 146 & 147 it is lacking the advertising page and in its place is bound the dedication "To Harriet" from Carlile's 1822 edition that used Clark's plates. SHELLEY, Percy Bysshe
Queen Mab
New York: Wright & Owen 1831. Stated second American edition. 12mo 18.5cm. In original cream paper-covered boards backed in light green muslin with original printed paper label to spine largely intact; plain endpapers; viii 9 10-120pp. Ink ownership inscription of H. A. Fletcher to title page. Temoin on final leaf of text. Straight tight and clean with general mild wear to boards spine faded one or two minor chips to spine label with some foxing heaviest on endleaves: Very Good. Includes an 8-page preface by Frances Wright and Robert Dale Owen.

The uncommon second American printing of Shelley's revolutionary epic poem published by the radical utopian duo of Frances Wright and Robert Dale Owen. A favorite book among the Owenites and unofficially adopted in the 1830's as the "Bible of the Chartists" Queen Mab was first issued privately by Shelley in 1813. It remained unnoticed by the public until a London piracy of 1821. That same year another piracy with a false New York imprint was issued by the prolific pirater of Shelley William Benbow; this London-printed piracy is often and incorrectly referred to as the first American edition.

The true first American edition was "published by Frances Wright and Robert Dale Owen in New York in 1831" and "reprinted in the same year with a simplified title page bearing the words 'Second Edition.' Subsequent reprints of this edition with Wright & Owen's preface were made in 1842 and 1852. It is noteworthy that in these latter editions Wright and Owen are referred to as the 'First American Publishers.'" George T. Goodspeed in The Colophon March 1939.

A survey of institutional copies finds 19 locations in North America but we note no recorded copy of the second edition in auction records for at least 25 years for comparison we note a comparatively plentiful 40 institutional locations for the privately-issued 1813 edition of which no fewer than five copies have appeared at auction in the last decade. Shelley, Percy-Bysshe
QUEEN MAB
Shelley Percy-Bysshe. QUEEN MAB. London: Printed for the Joint Stock Book Company and Published by Richard Carlile 1826. First 32mo edition with the suppressed dedication appended at end of text. Original drab boards paper label on front cover uncut. A little chipping at spine light rubbing else tight clean copy in the rare original boards binding with a nice full label. The first edition was published in 1813 in octavo and pirated by Clark in 1821 in duodecimo. Clark was sent to jail for his trouble and the following year Richard Carlile reprinted the book again in octavo and had on hand for sale 180 copies of the 1813 edition. Brooks and Watson produced octavo editions in 1829 and 1841 respectively and in 1832 Carlile issued a duodecimo edition but this near miniature edition of 1826 was the smallest trigesimo-secundo of the early editions and rather scarce; Thomas Wise had all of the above mentioned editions including Shelley's own heavily revised copy of the 1813 edition.
