SHELLEY, Percy Bysshe
The Revolt of Islam; a poem in twelve cantos.
London: for C. and J. Ollier 1818. Fear not the future weep not for the past First edition revised issue with new title and cancels and the 1818 date as usual. This is a very nice copy of Shelley's poem dedicated to Mary Shelley with the errata leaf at the rear. In 1817 the publishers C. and J. Ollier agreed to publish Shelley's long poem Laon and Cythna. Shelley's new father-in-law William Godwin recommended a master printer for the job Buchanan Millan who made minor alterations to the text without consulting the poet. Shelley wrote to the Olliers complaining about these liberties whereupon the Olliers read the work for the first time and realised what they had agreed to publish. In the original version the titular lovers were brother and sister. London was alive with gossip about Shelley living with both Mary Godwin and her half-sister Claire Clairmont and in contemporary usage such a ménage was termed incest St Clair p. 432. Shelley therefore made alterations removing any hint of incest and gave the book a new title The Revolt of Islam by which it is still known. The book is made up from original sheets of Laon and Cythna with 26 cancelled leaves and a new title leaf. A few copies were issued with the title misdated 1817; this is the second issue as usual with the correct date. Octavo 223 x 144 mm. Early 20th-century red crushed morocco spine with five raised bands lettered and decorated in gilt turn-ins richly gilt blue endpapers top edge gilt others trimmed. Binding a little rubbed a couple of corners lightly worn short closed tear to title page skilfully repaired a few small marginal stains to contents otherwise clean internally. A very good copy. Ashley V pp. 67-8; Forman Shelley 50; Granniss 44; Tinker 1895. William St Clair The Godwins and the Shelleys: A Biography of a Family 1991. hardcover

Mr. Gosse's introduction throws new light on the ' Lady the wonder of her kind' who played the part of 'an Eve in this Eden ' where grew the sensitive plant. Drawing upon Medwin's notes to a never-published second edition of his life of the poet he tells us that this paragon of her sex was a certain Countess of Mountcashell an Irish lady about fifty years of age of sufficient unconventionality to be welcomed by Shelley and his company as a congenial spirit. The notes on this lady and the editor's gleaning of facts concerning the mimosa pudica or sensitive plant celebrated bythe poet are interesting. The illustrations large and small accompanying the slender thread of text form the conspicuous feature of the book and make it one of the most sumptuous gift volumes of the year. The cover design is a thing of beauty" The Dial 1911. William Heinemann/J.B. Lippincott Co unknown

SHELLEY, Percy Bysshe; illustrated by HOUSMAN, Laurence:
THE SENSITIVE PLANT
London: Aldine House. 1898. First edition with Housman illustrations first printing. First edition with Housman illustrations first printing. Publisher's original blue cloth over beveled boards with titles and decorations in gilt to the upper board and spine. Top edge gilt. Title page printed in brown and red. Beautifully illustrated with twelve tissue-guarded black and white plates by Laurence Housman. An excellent near fine copy the binding firm with just a little rubbing at the extremities the cloth and gilt bright and fresh. The spine is slightly rolled. The contents with a small previous owner's signature to the top of the front endpaper are otherwise clean throughout. 'The Sensitive Plant' a relatively late poem in Shelley's short but prolific writing career takes a symbolic mythic approach to the themes of beauty and death. In his note on the illustrations Housman states his belief that illustration cannot improve or add to an already beautiful poem and can only capture the unique response of the individual reader; the richly detailed atmospheric garden he offers here is surely a worthy and beautiful response to Shelley's vision. Shelley, Percy Bysshe; Robinson, Charles (Illustrator); Gosse, Edmund (Introduction)
The Sensitive Plant
Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott Co 1911. First Trade Edition. Hardcover. Near fine/very good. Robinson Charles. First U.S. trade edition as illustrated by Robinson quarto size 128 pp. in original dust jacket. Percy Bysshe Shelley's 1792-1822 "The Sensitive Plant" is a delicate fairy fable about ephemeral beauty and the aspiration to follow dreams when the reality of the senses fails. It was first published in 1820 in "Prometheus Unbound" along with some of Shelley's best known work; here it is re-imagined with the hazy watercolour illustrations of prolific children's book illustrator Charles Robinson 1870-1937. Though paired with Shelley long after his death they are well matched "his black and white illustration reflects the influence of Beardsley and Walter Crane and his watercolour illustrations have delicacy and sensitivity greatly helped by the four colour process early in the century as the alternative to lithography. By incorporating lettering into the page design and in his planning of the book as a whole he developed the Arts and Crafts tradition of the book as a work of art" Peppin Brigid & Micklethwait Lucy "Book Illustrators of the Twentieth Century" p. 265.

This edition of "The Sensitive Plant" certainly exemplifies that ideal of the artist's hand in all aspects of a book's design with a beautifully composed typeface decorative borders pale pink page numbers and stunning full-color mounted plates. With an introduction by Edmund William Gosse 1849-1928 a poet and author who was influential in the literary world of his day encouraging the careers of Yeats and James Joyce he served as the librarian of the House of Lords and a lecturer at Trinity College eventually serving as the literary editor for the 1911 edition of the "Encyclopaedia Britannica".

___DESCRIPTION: Original full green cloth with gilt pictorial upper board and backstrip top edge gilt illustrated endpapers illustrated half-title pictorial title-page first page of the introduction framed in a pictorial border with a large decorative initial eighteen mounted color plates with tissue guards including frontis numerous color and black and white vignettes in text headpieces tailpieces and initials; quarto size 10.5" by 8" pagination: i-vi vii-xii xiii-xvi 17-127 128 the first trade edition as illustrated by Robinson vintage bookseller's ticket on rear paste-down endpaper Brentano's New York. With the scarce original pictorial dust jacket which matches the illustration on the endpapers which is unclipped although as was the general practice of the day with no printed price.

___CONDITION: A near fine copy internally bright and complete with only a few light stray marks no prior owner markings other than the bookseller's ticket referred to above the text block is slightly cocked yet remains strong with solid hinges and the gilt covers are marvelously bright and clean; note that the register was slightly off on the decorative title page the illustrations are perfect; just a hint of rubbing to the head and tail of the backstrip and to one corner this copy is near fine; the dust jacket is very good plus clean with only a few small chips at the edges and a small tear along one joint none of which obscures the text or illustrations; overall very good and scarce as such. A stunning production of a lovely children's tale.

___POSTAGE: International customers please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details.

___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
