Er war der Sohn eines armen Schuhmachers. Er konnte kaum die Schule besuchen bis ihm der D�nenk�nig Friedrich VI. dem seine Begabung aufgefallen war 1822 den Besuch der Lateinschule in Slagelsen erm�glichte. Bis 1828 wurde ihm auch das Universit�tsstudium bezahlt. Andersen unternahm Reisen durch Deutschland Frankreich und Italien die ihn zu lebhaften impressionistischen Studien anregten.
