First printing of the Miller edition. The first edition was published in London by Chapman and Hall in 1847. Miller's edition has different stories and it may not have the same stories in J. Wiley's 1848 edition. This is the first printing of Miller's edition. Several stains and scuffs to cloth inner hinges cracked front free endpaper missing somewhat shaken scattered spotting and soiling to text pages tide marks to margins of some leaves and plates a fair to about good copy. The first volume of Nexo's Ditte trilogy a major work by Nexo who was the leading exponent of the proletarian genre in Danish. Ditte: Girl Alive tells the story of an illegitimate child of Danish laborers and her struggle to rise abover her poverty and wretched station in life. In many ways Ditte's story mirrors that of the protagonist in Nexo's four-part masterpiece Pelle the Conqueror. Basis for the classic 1946 film Ditte Daughter of Man directed by Bjarne Henning-Jensen and starring Tove Maes in the title role. Large quarto 12 1/8 x 9 3/4 inches; 309 x 249 mm. viii 250 2 pp. Mounted color frontispiece with descriptive tissue guard printed in black and twenty-seven mounted color plates included in pagination. Plates framed with thick pale green line border and accompanied by guard leaves printed in pale green with stylized pineapples on the recto and border of snowflakes above descriptive caption on the verso. Text pages with pale green snowflake borders at top and bottom. All leaves framed with double pale green lines.<br/><br/>Original dark chocolate brown pigskin pictorially stamped with three-peacock design and lettered in gilt on front cover and spine with Hodder & Stoughton gilt-stamped at spine foot. Top edge gilt others uncut. Endpapers printed in pale green with repeated design of stylized peacocks. A stunning copy unique and arguably the finest copy of the De Luxe Edition. <br/><br/>The binding and endpapers do not conform to Hughey's description and appear to be unique to this handsome copy. As she notes the pigskin binding "brandy colour" not dark chocolate-brown as here should only have two thin gilt rules as frame gilt lettering date 1911 on spine and white endpapers not illustrated as here and in the trade edition. We contacted her for insight. Having seen only two copies of the Edition De Luxe William Randolph Hearst's and another viewed at a Washington book fair she reports:<br/><br/>"So where does your copy fit in And when was it bound I tend to think it was done close to original printing time November 1911. There were a lot of oddball copies done then.The title was sold very quickly - all sold by December 1911. The fact that your endpapers are paper available at the time to the trade edition tends to date it.It is possible that someone or firm had this done for your copy #20. Your copy's binding design on front cover is clearly an adaptation of the endpapers but I do not think by Dulac as it does not appear in any of his other editions of Hans Andersen's work. Someone may not have liked the plain cover."<br/><br/>If that's the case we'd like to thank them. This special copy is the better for it.<br/><br/>Hughey 27. Hardcover. Very Good. N.d. circa 1890s. 4to. 26 by 21 cm. Unpaginated 20 pp. The background illustrations sets most of these pages apart from a typical chromolithographic die-cut album. The settings include garden and meadow a castle a seascape a lake. The cut-outs are of Tyrolean dancers dogs Lord Fauntleroy-like children soldiers courtiers flowers and bouquets ships and boats etc. Achieved by all this is collage that is not merely random but has a real cohesion. The cover is a classic Aesthetic Movement album cover with gilt a play of diagonals and rococo ornament and a chromolithographic centerpiece. The paper is acidic and thus a bit brittle -- relatively though less than many such albums. Attribution is based on a pencil inscription on the FEP. A little crinkling and minor closed tears as well as general wear. <br/><br/> hardcover books

Small octavo 6 1/4 x 4 in; 157 x 103 mm. Collection One: 47 1 blank; 68; 52 pp. Collection Two: 72; 60 pp. Two leaves comprised of table of contents and dedication page to Collection Two have been misbound out of sequence. Otherwise complete with half titles for each volume both shared title pages both shared contents leaves all dedication leaves all half titles for each fairy tale and all five regular title pages. <br/><br/>Contemporary quarter calf over marbled boards. Marbled edges. Some light scattered foxing and toning and an occasional inkspot. Otherwise a very nice copy. Housed in a quarter morocco clamshell case.<br/><br/>A work of extreme scarcity with OCLC/KVK recording only a handful of copies in libraries worldwide and with possibly only one other example the Klein copy 1980 coming to auction within the last thirty-three years of ABPC records Sotheby Hodgson's catalogue note vague and incomplete. <br/><br/>These stories were originally issued in parts; very few have survived in that state. The publisher Reitzel collected the individual parts in their original printings added tables of contents and published them in anthologies as here.<br/><br/>The importance of these stories here - staggeringly - in their first edition cannot be underestimated. They have become deeply embedded in the Western world's cultural consciousness as timeless as our memories of childhood. More to the point however is that unlike Charles Perrault and the Brothers Grimm who were compilers and talented interpreters of traditional folk stories in their respective cultures in this second series of Andersen tales the stories are wholly original the product of a brilliant imagination featuring characters of great love and yearning who misunderstood and misfits in a cruel world have become transcendent heroes for humanity of all ages.
