A very scarce Latin edition of John Dryden's beautiful poem commemorating the St. Cecilia's day the saint patron of music written here in both English and Latin. A very scarce edition of this poem with both the English and Latin versions of the poems. Half-title is present. This poem celebrates the Christian martyr St Cecilia who is the patron saint of music. The poem was written to commemorate her saint's day in 1687 and was set to music for the celebration on the 22nd November. The poem begins with a description of the universe and its creation and how music created harmony. Written by John Dryden the noted English poet who became the first Poet Laureate in England in 1668. Translated into Latin by Robert Ward. Disbound. Externally wraps are discoloured with some marks. Prior owner's ink inscription to the front wrap 'Rev. J. C. Welch'. Some tidemarks to the wraps. Spots to the wraps. Edgwear to the wraps with some small chips and small closed tears. Rear wrap is detached but present. Internally disbound. Pages are age-toned with somes spots and tidemarks. This set is uncommon to find in this edition.John Dryden 1631-1700 was an English poet literary critic translator and playwright who was appointed England's first Poet Laureate in 1668. He dominated the literary scene of Restoration England to such a point that the period became known as the Age of Dryden. With a four-page catalogue of books printed by Robert and Andrew Foulis to the rear of Volume I. In full calf bindings. Externally generally smart with a little rubbing to the extremities and to the head and tail of the spine. Half of the spine label to Volume I is detached but intact and kept inside the front of Volume I for safe-keeping. Small loss of leather to the head of the spine of Volume II. The first edition second issue with the second line of the imprint ending "in". This second issue is more common to see than the first issue of which only two examples were known to the bibliographer Macdonald.John Dryden wrote 'Religio Laici' as a response the Father Richard Simon's 'Histoire Critique due Vieux Testament'. In this text Dryden set out to address the issues in Simon's book such as his tendency to undermine Protestantism and other religious issues of the day such as Deism. Five years after Dryden published this poem however he converted to Roman Catholicism. Written in heroic couplets by Dryden during his tenure as Poet Laureate. Register runs as: 1 a3 b2 C2 B-C4 D6. Collated complete. Rebound in paper covered boards. Externally generally smart. Tear to the head of the front joint. Spine and extremities are age-toned. Light handling marks to the wraps.
