The third edition of Volume I and II and the first edition of Volume III of the poetical works of John Dryden from Robert Bell's major work The Annotated Edition of the English Poets 24 vols first published 18547. In these annotated editions Bell includes memoirs of the poets and various notes and introductions to particularly famous poems.Volume I contains a memoir of Dryden by Bell and seventeen poems. Volume II contains twenty-two more poems a preface to Dryden's fables and the first couple of parts to his 'Tales from Chaucer'. Volume III contains the rest of his 'Tales from Chaucer' his translations from Boccace his epitaphs and inscriptions and his lyric poems.Four pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear of Volumes I and III.This work is scarce in a three-volume set. In the publisher's original cloth bindings. Externally generally smart though faded to the spines. Small losses and shelf wear to the spine labels not obscuring the lettering. Bound without half title as issued.The story which in Dryden's early effort had been intended to suggest a parallel to the English rebellion was now to be applied to the contest of the court against Shaftesbury and Monmouth. Dryden however did his best to extenuate his own responsibility in a Vindication of the Duke of Guise separately published.This play was first performed December 4th 1682 to dubious if not unfavourable reviews but with revisions found success with the United Companies of London.John Dryden 1631 - 1700 was the poet laureate of England in 1668. First published in 1682.In this poem Dryden references the Whig creation of a medal commemorating the release of one of their leaders the Earl of Shaftesbury from the Tower in 1681.He uses the metaphor of the medal to mock Whig ambition and hypocrisy portraying them as destabilising the nation for personal gain.ESTC T39089The work of Poet Laureate John Dryden who dominated the literary life of Renaissance England.
