Mr Dryden
Miscellaneous Essays By Monsieur St Euremont Translated Out of the French
London: John Everingham 1692. First edition. Leather. Good. 6.5" by 4". None. A collection of Saint-Evremond's essays continued by John Dryden. The first edition of this work and in fact the first English translation of Evremond's works. This is the first volume of this work a second volume followed in 1694. Bookplate to front pastedown has been covered with a Cholmondeley library plate. The bookplate belongs to one of the Cholmondeley family as it bears the family crest. The bookplate is likely to belong to either George Cholmondeley 1st Marquess of Cholmondeley and The Earl of Cholmondeley or one of his descendants. From the antiquarian library of Christopher Rowe. Christopher Rowe was a schoolmaster in Norwich and then in Bristol. Throughout his career he inspired many to love literature history and music. He was a specialist on 17th century printer and bookseller Humphres Moseley and began his unfortunately unfinished PhD dissertation on him. Charles de Marguetel de Saint-Denis seigneur de Saint-Evremond was a French soldier hedonist essayist and literary critic. He wrote only for his friends and did not intend for his work to be published despite a few pieces being leaked in his lifetime. This work includes essays on the Roman people the Wars of the romans the Carthaginian war of Tiberius and more. Translated and continued by English poet and literary critic John Dryden. Dryden is also famed for being England's first Poet Laureate. In a full calf binding with gilt stamping to spine and board edges. Externally generally smart with rubbing to the extremities and to the joints. Loss to the head and tail of spine and to the spine label due to rubbing. Prior owners' bookplates to front pastedown one armorial crest and a library plate for cholmondeley library. Bookplate to recto of front endpaper belongs to Christopher Rowe. Internally firmly bound. Book is closely cut to running title throughout resulting in small loss to the top of words. Pages are age toned as expected with instances of occasional light spots. Good John Everingham hardcover
