Simone Lazaroo is an acclaimed Australian fiction writer who lectures in creative writing at Murdoch University Perth. She lives in Fremantle Western Australia a region which often inspires her work. Born in Singapore in 1961 of a Eurasian father and Australian mother she migrated with her family to Australia in early childhood. This double heritage and its complexities underlie her constant enquiry into cultural encounters and subjectivities as well as her creative use of imagery language and folklore. Her narrative has engaged with historical and colonial relations between Australia and Asia which she has researched extensively but recreates in her fiction through powerful visual metaphors and explorations of desire conveyed in a precise and evocative poetic language. She has published five novels: Lost River: Four Albums 2014 Sustenance 2010 The Travel Writer 2006 The Australian Fianc� 2000 and The World Waiting to be Made 1994 for which she has received numerous awards. Her recent writing while never relinquishing a deep sense of history focuses on contemporary travel and consumerism memorialisation and mourning. The two stories published in this volume are part of a new series which examines urban environments and their paradoxes. In an inversion of traditional literary journeys they narrate an Australian traveller�s encounters with street dwellers in the global cities of the Western World.
