A sumptuously bound collection with a memoir of Spenser and also critical dissertations by the Reverend George Gilfillan. George Gilfillan was a spasmodic poets who also edited the works of several British poets. Spenser is best known for his epic poem and fantastical allegory 'The Faerie Queene'. This poem celebrates the Tudor dynasty and Elizabeth I. 'The Shepheardes Calendar' was Spenser's first major work it emulates Virgil's 'Eclogues'. Both of these works are to volume IV of this work. Additionally this set contains many of Spenser's minor poems including hymns 'Colin Clout's Come home Again' and 'Amoretti or Sonnets'. Inscription to the recto of front endpaper 'David Baker Left to him by his aunt H. . Mills-Baker' A lovely set of the poetical works by one of the premier craftsmen of Modern English verse. Condition: In a half calf binding with paper covered boards. Externally very smart with light fading to the spine. Shelfwear to the extremities. Inscription to the recto of front endpaper Vol V and Vol I. Internally all volumes are firmly bound. Pages are bright with light spotting to the first and last few pages. A Morell binding with the binder's stamp to the verso of front endpapers. A limited edition of this work being one of an 1250 set print-run as noted to the verso of the half-title to volume I. Collated complete. With a frontispiece fourteen full page illustrations and numerous decorative headpieces and tail pieces to volume I. With a frontispiece eleven full page illustrations and numerous headpieces and tailpieces to volume II. All illustrations and decorations to this sumptuous work are by Louis Fairfax-Muckley. With the blue paper wraps bound in to the first volume. Edmund Spenser is best known for this allegorical poem he is regarded as one of the premier craftsmen of nascent Modern English verse. The poem was originally published over the course of six years with books I - III being published in 1590 and books IV to VI in 1596. Condition: In half calf bindings with cloth covered boards. Externally very smart. Minor fading to the spines. Light rubbing to the extremities and to the joints. A few handling marks and some shelfwear to the spines. Complete in six volumes this set is adorned with engravings by Ludwick Du Guernier. First thus the first edited edition of this work. With a list of subscribers to volume I. ESTC No. T61111. Engravings to these works are by Louis du Guernier a French born engraver. He became a director of the academt in Great Queen Street. With a frontispiece to every volume and an additional two plates to volume I one plate to volume II one plate to volume III three plates to volume IV four plates to volume V and two plates to volume VI. Nineteen plates total. With a gift inscription by the hand of John Taylor Coleridge the English judge son to Captain James Coleridge and nephew of the Romantic poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Coleridge gifts this set to his first born grandchild 'Mildred Mary'. Mildred Mary was the daughter of John Duke Coleridge the first Baron Coleridge. Mildred eloped with the lawyer Charles Warren Adams in 1885. This edition was compiled by John Hughes an English poet essayist and translator. His texts were used as major source materials for famous authors to come. His scholarly contributions remained in print for a century after his death. This edition of Spenser has numerous notes to the first volume by Hughes. Edmund Spenser is best known for his fantastical allegory 'The Faeire Queene' celebrating the Tudor dynasty and Elizabeth I. Spenser is often regarded as one of the forerunners in nascent Modern English Verse and his canonical standing is still celebrated today. A lovely six volume set of this poet's works. Being an early critical edition edited by a premier literary scholar. Condition: In uniform full calf bindings. Externally worn. A Small amount of loss to the head and tail of spine to volume I. Volume II has a large amount of loss to the tail of spine. Portions of spine label lacking to volumes I and III. Volumes III-VI have a small amount of loss to the head of spine and larger losses to the tail of spines. Hinges to volumes I III and VI are strained but firm. Both joints to volume II are tender with the hinges strained. Hinges to volume IV and V are tender. Tidemarks to the bottom half of boards. Gift inscription to the recto of front endpaper dated Nov 6 1874. 'To Mildred Mary my most dear and first born Grandchild on her Birthday with kindest love J T Coleridge H. C Nov 6 1874' Tidemarks to the front and rear endpapers to all volumes. To volumes III IV and VI this affects the title pages. Internally all volumes are generally firmly bound though strained in places. Pages are generally very bright. The occasional leaves are age toned. Spenser is thought of as a key figure in the formation of modern English poetry and is considered one of the foremost poets in the language. He was an Elizabethan and his most famous work the Faerie Queene celebrates the Tudor dynasty. His work would have been standard fare for schoolboys throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries. This is a prize copy with a prize bookplate to the front pastedown. It was awarded to Joseph Biggs for French at Ashville College in 1915. This was one of the later books of the Kelmscott Press and it was finished several days after Morris's death on October 3 1896. These beautiful sample pages include the first three pages for "Januarie" and the first two for March. The Januarie pages are in near fine condition but the March leaf has a tear along the bottom margin not affecting text. Each has a striking ten line first initial. The two Gaskin illustrations are printed on the versos of a bifold leaf. There is a three inch tear along the bottom of the fold not affecting the illustrations. Accompanied by a proof of the front cover showing the lettering. Very nice examples of Kelmscott Press printing and illustration. PRI/011816. Kelmscott Press unknown

Wilkinson was very well connected to key figures in politics and in the armed forces as he journalist and had long hoped for an academic appointment as his interests increasingly turned toward historical study. He was elected the first Chichele Professor of Military History in the University of Oxford and Fellow of All Souls College in 1909. During World War I he becamelike Clausewitz's foremost German proponent at the time Hans Delbrck--an energetic critic of his nation's counterproductive strategy and policy. He remained an influential voice in Britain until his death in 1937. Condition: In a red cloth binding with gilt title detail to spine. Externally generally sound with bumping to extremities a little loss of cloth at the head and tail and discolouration to the spine. The hinges are slightly strained. Internally binding is strained in places. Pages are generally bright and clean with light foxing to endpapers and a small closed tear to the top right corner of the front free endpaper.
